INTRODUCTION.

Over the years, interfaith relationships in Nigeria have been approached and treated from a dialogical point of view limited only to Christian-Muslim relationships or Christian-African Traditional Religious relationships. Unfortunately, this approach has not yielded the much needed tolerance, relationships, and collaborations among the three religions in Nigeria (African Traditional Religion (ATR), Islam and Christianity) because a major religion is always left out in these dialogues.

Given the amazing interest in interfaith relationships among the religions in Nigeria, and the desire to proffer a better approach to these relationships , this book proposes a trialogical approach as a partial solution to the religious conflicts and crises that have become the order of the day among the three religions in Nigeria. In this approach no religions is left out; all (ATR, Islam, and Christianity) are treated as equal partners in seeking and offering solution towards better relationships among religious followers and the Nigerian people. Interfaith relationships and activities involving all three religions in Nigeria (ATR, Islam and Christianity) without excluding any, is a powerful tool for promoting religious harmony, peace and cooperation for the stability and advancement of our nation. I came to this realization and conclusion through my personal experiences and involvements in trialogical interfaith and interactional relationships with these three religions: ATR, Christianity and Islam.

Furthermore, as the world is moving towards a global community, Nigeria is not left out. Hence, the problem of religion in Nigeria raises the question: how can the Igbo South East Christians live peacefully and enjoy all the benefits of the nation in the Muslim North, and how can the Northern Muslims live peacefully in the traditional Igbo East and Yoruba West, and enjoy the benefits of Nigerian citizens, while still maintaining publicly their religious identity? The answer and solution to this problem, I strongly believe, can only be found in interfaith relationships among the three religions in Nigeria.

Looking at the things that divide us and those that unite us, this book calls on followers of the different religions to move beyond their differences and work together in the spirit of interfaith relationships to make Nigeria better. It is pertinent at this point to emphasize that the focus of interfaith relationships among the religions in Nigeria is not aimed at proselytization, evangelization and apologetics. Rather, it is aimed at promoting mutual understanding and respect among the faith communities; an understanding and respect that will reduce religious bigotry, intolerance, violence and conflict, while promoting harmony, cooperation, friendship, tolerance and a peaceful society. This is exactly what Amir Hussain meant when he implied that interfaith relationships are not conversion, but an understanding and appreciation of the beauty and richness of the traditions of each other’s faith, in which we begin to understand our common heritage that can lead us to work together on a common future.¹

Moreover, interfaith activities that embrace both the grass roots and the religious leadership of communities offer solutions to problems where political and diplomatic approaches have failed. This is because most of the religious problems in Nigeria occur at the grass-roots level and a better solution must include the same grassroots. Political and diplomatic approaches are mostly at the level of intellectuals and committees, and mostly exclude the grassroots.

The previous volume (Vol. II) in this series, on the one hand, discussed the horrible incidents of religious violence in Nigeria, occasioned partly as result of poor relationships among the three religions. It also, on the other hand, discussed the positive gains and improvements achieved, mostly through trialogical relationships, towards building a more harmonious religious and social environment for the Nigerian nation and people. This last volume, among other things, discusses in practical terms how, through interfaith activities, the three religions in Nigeria can have a better understanding of each other. It discusses the guidelines that will promote harmonious relationships and advance the cause of peace and development in Nigeria. Above all, it points out ways of working together and harmoniously to prevent future occurrences of religious conflicts and violence, which have so far dealt seriously blows to the nation and tainted the credibility of the three religions in Nigeria.

For convenient sake, this last volume is divided into six chapters. Chapters one through three provide the guidelines, commitments and suggested activities for fruitful trialogical interfaith relationships among the three religions in Nigeria. Chapter four points out and examines possible obstacles towards interfaith relationships and how best to deal with and avoid these obstacles.

Finally, chapters five and six re-assess what has been said and done so far. These chapters look into the future of Nigeria as a nation in connection with religion: its peace, stability, and well-being of its citizens, and what role religion has to play in it. They evaluate the past and propose ways forward.

CHAPTER ONE

GUIDELINES FOR INTERFAITH RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THE THREE RELIGIONS IN NIGERIA.

Interfaith relationships do not take place in a vacuum; as the name indicates, it involves interpersonal and interreligious encounters and relations among followers of the three religions in Nigeria: African Traditional Religion, Islam and Christianity. As such there is need to lay careful ground rules as guiding principles that will regulate and direct the activities of participants so that
