Sonja Michelle Archie
Sonja Michelle Archie, discussed her dream of writing a book about her life with me. She wanted to tell others how she faced the dilemma of kidney failure, cancer, and heart disease, and how she lived to overcome each obstacle. She wanted those who face health issues, as she encountered, to know that “You Can Live,” regardless of the diagnosis. She believed that following doctors’ orders and faith in God will help you live. I have been a part of her life throughout each obstacle that she encountered, and watched her gravitate to the positives and live beyond the expectations of her physicians. I live in Sacramento, California, and have completed degrees in human services, and psychology. I am an editorial writer and a government worker.

Overcoming Obstacles
I thought the trials would never end, until God came along and carried me through them.
It was the end of summer, I was ten years old, and my life changed. On a Sunday after church service, I immediately went to the church van to lie down, as I was not feeling well. I lay on the seat waiting for the bus driver to take me home. I felt very weak, my throat was sore, my head ached, and my body felt weird. I didn’t know what was wrong with me.
When I got home, I went straight to my room and went to sleep.
The next day, even though I was not feeling well, I went to school. Later that day, I asked if I could go to the nurse’s office, as I still wasn’t feeling well. The school nurse took my temperature and sent me home because I had a fever.
My mother called the doctor’s office the next day to make an appointment. It was time for my annual checkup. The doctor completed the examination and informed me that I had strep throat, but that wasn’t all. I remember the doctor telling my mother that he couldn’t give me a penicillin shot because it was probably too late. But he wanted to run tests to make a final diagnosis.
After many tests, the doctor determined that the severity of my strep throat had affected my kidneys. He explained that the retention of fluid could have been a sign. I had been retaining fluid but did not know why. He explained that the retention of fluid caused the toxins in my body to damage my kidney. My body would swell, and my weight fluctuated from 120 to 290 pounds.
Because of the severity of my condition, I missed many days of school. I was in and out of the hospital on a regular basis, sometimes being in the intensive care unit for up to thirty days. On one occasion, I remembered fading in and out of a coma.
During the episodes of going back and forth to the hospital, after the doctors stabilized me and released me to go home, I sometimes had to return to the hospital the same day. It was difficult for me to understand what was going on—I was only a child, so it was
