About this ebook

Our childrens role models are rolling stones
Who tumble out of control
Until they reach rock bottom
In a land(fill)ed with wasted human remains
Like. broken hearts, wasted dreams and souls unrummaged
TIC TOC
Is the sound of our love for life running out
And our children are looking for US
As we run about
Grown men and women wildin out
Our children are CRYING OUT
While playing hide and seek games with bullies and gun rays
We sit in our fancy cars and lose consciousness
Behind tented shades.

Micki Barocca

Poet, educator, singer, songwriter, thespian - Born Michelle Singleton on December 26, 1975 to Baptist ministers, “Micki”, nickname given to her by her family as a child, spent her years growing up in South Carolina with her three siblings. She added “Barocca” as part of her name - meaning a uniquely shaped pearl in Portuguese, a great fit to mirror her unique style. She began writing poetry at age 15 and quickly learned how wonderful a gift she had after being acknowledged by her high school English teacher. After winning many talent competitions in her community, at her university and at the state level, for her gift of song, she was then approached by a producer in 1997 to go into the studio. It is there that she began writing and creating her own style of music. In 1998, she received her B.A. in English Education from South Carolina State University, where she also studied theater for a period of time. For four years she taught English in the public schools of South Carolina, and continued writing poetry and making music. Shortly thereafter in late 2002, she relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, an entertainment center, where she found herself in front of many audiences rendering beautiful songs and the spoken word. She has since blessed stages in and throughout Philadelphia and has also made appearances in New York. On a never ending quest to nurture young minds, she earned her Masters in Education in 2007 and continues to teach English in the public school system. In 2005, she birthed a daughter, Ala Michelle, who is the ultimate highlight of her life. In 2010 she entered the stage in a different light – as an actress. She has appeared in the stage productions “The Mirror Affect”, written and directed by Philly native and renowned author, Stephanie Owens and “It’s More Than Just Words”, written and directed by poet and Philly native Sylvia Towns. She began her journey as a poet/writer as a teen and has kept a pen in her hand ever since. “Open Your Eyes and Stand Still” is her first book of poetry, which is comprised of some of her favorite and most electrifying pieces throughout the years with topics ranging from love and heartbreak to family and community to revolutionary words encouraging humanity to open their eyes and to take a stand on issues that affect our world. Micki Barocca currently resides in Philadelphia, Pa. and is working on her second book of poetry, a biographical novel and the release of her first album.

Open Your Eyes and Stand Still - Micki Barocca

    Meditation #1

It’s quiet at three o’clock in the morning

When most of the world is asleep

And millions of souls are at peace

    For just a little while

    Energy ripples through the trees

And blows breezes over the land and water

While the Moon is keeping watch,

I am in awe as she switches roles with the Sun on their revolving stage

and the creatures that dwell in

secret places all come out to absorb the

waves of tranquility that keep us all just two steps

    away from insanity.

    High On LOVE

    Inhaling your smile

I get high off of laughter

Your stare entreats me to your soul’s delights

If I could dwell here for eternity

Where hours would seem like seconds

    And moments drift aimlessly

I would hold your thoughts captive

Unleashing them only to rescue me

Wild wonders fill your eyes with beautiful

    telepathic images

    Which capture my mind’s eye

    Immortal magicians are we

    For the magic of Houdini

Couldn’t break these chains of serenity that

    engulf me now

Switching sides from the carnal minded

I feel as innocent as a dove in flight

    Although the night comes

    Our glow supercedes the darkness

Our flow is smooth to me regardless of the

    situation

    Or the time

For our souls are soaring and intertwined

Vibin’ and catching glimpses of angel’s wings

    Getting struck by cupid’s sting

We’re giving birth to freed minds

Letting mother Earth admire our beauty

    While our mental pictures

    Reflect love’s purity.

    Forget

Please don’t answer me when I call your name

And forget to remember my face in the deepest

    subliminal part of your consciousness

Cancel out the past plans we made in the before about our absolute future

Leave my kisses on the table

and please, dispose of my passion for you

Unclench my hold of your hand

And free my spirit from your heart

Let the wind sweep clean the scent

of my skin from your pillow

Return the words that you borrowed from

    cupid’s scroll

Tell our unborn children that they will never be

Then, take care for no reason at all

    And Forget Me.

    My Mother

My mother wanted to be a dancer

And I was born with the unexplainable knowledge

Of how to transform rhythm into movement

She never made it to Juilliard

She had to master the art of

    cooking, cleaning, making bottles and

    loving her family

She got her bachelor’s in business

and her master’s in home economics

    But she never quite
