About this ebook

This devotional is designed for women who have experienced childhood abuse. It includes information concerning the long-term effects of abuse, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Dissociative Disorders, but also offers hope in revealing Gods true character. Individuals who have experienced abuse from a caregiver often have a skewed view of God. This book reveals His love for them and His desire to heal them; it also encourages them to know that they have a voice and are heard by the Father.

Author

Renee M. Prows

Renee has been ministering to women since 1990 as a Bible teacher, lay counselor, and more recently as an ordained Women’s Pastor at a large multi-cultural church. In order to minister to women more effectively, Renee went back to school to earn a Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. Her desire is to minister healing to the Body of Christ, and to impart skills to those who have experienced childhood abuse. Renee is intimately acquainted with the struggles that stem from a childhood filled with abuse and great loss. However, she would be the first to point out that she has had a good life, and that Jesus is the only reason she has been able to overcome the emotional and psychological traumas that resulted from her childhood. In the Fall of 2011, she decided to devote herself to full time writing in order to minister to a larger number of women.

    INTRODUCTION

When an individual is abused by a parent or immediate caregiver the damage in trust can be massive; especially in regard to trusting or understanding the love of God. Survivors are often afraid of the term ‘father’; it can represent someone who was abusive, distant, and uncaring to their needs or feelings. They may have spent a large amount of their childhood trying to avoid being in the presence of their father. They may have learned how to become very compliant, always trying to appease any anger or abuse before it happened; often to have their best laid plans fail. All of these experiences can lay a belief concerning God that the only place to be safe is away from His presence and that is exactly what the enemy wants the children of God to believe. He wants them to believe God is waiting to strike them or that God is not listening to their cries. The reason that Satan does not want them to cry out to the Father is because he knows the true nature of God, that He is a deliverer; one that sets the captives free. We are going to take a close look at the nature and character of God. At times it may seem like the questions are simplistic, but I realize many with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) may need to take small steps when discovering the true nature of our Father in heaven.

In this devotion, we will take a look at the One who perfectly represents the Father; His Son Jesus. Hebrews 1:3 describes Him as: the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person. Therefore, we will continually look at Jesus to see the Father’s nature. We will choose to look at the face of Jesus to see the true nature of God. 2 Corinthians 4:6 says: For it is the God who commands light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the Face of Jesus Christ.

I have been blessed with the privilege of ministering to many women throughout the years. I began my work in 1990, and my journey of healing and ministry has been intertwined through the years. As a young Christian wife and mother, I prayed repeatedly for the Lord’s wisdom and guidance to be the woman of God that He desired me to be; the key to this process has been to grow in the understanding that I am His daughter. My adoption was sealed with the precious blood of His Son and I have access to Him; to open my mouth and share my heart with Him. Additionally, this process included seeking help through counseling. God uses whatever process He desires and I thank God for the godly counselors I have had at different times in my journey.

This devotion is not based on information from my clients; it is the result of years of walking with Jesus, my own healing process, and research that I did while I was working toward my Master’s degree in Professional Counseling. It is for women that can relate to the struggle of understanding the love of God; for them, it is my statement saying Ladies, there is hope for you, and His name is Jesus. Any success I have experienced in life is because of Jesus. I could have easily became a statistic but for the grace of God. I do not say this flippantly, I say it because it is true. If it wasn’t for Jesus, and His blood being shed for me, I would still be a captive.

This book by no means is intended to cover all aspects of the healing process. I do believe it is foundational because Christ is our foundation. Individuals who have experienced ongoing trauma in their developmental years focused on surviving rather than thriving. Therefore, as adults, they may lack general skills. Many times, they will lack self-soothing skills that can help them regulate and deal with difficult emotions. Understand that the abuse occurred within interpersonal relationships; therefore, there was no opportunity for them to experience help when they were overwhelmed. There was no help available for them. This can set them up later in life for addictions as they try to numb or escape difficult emotions.

Their feelings about the abuse can include fear, shame, rage, self-hatred, and confusion. At the most basic level, when children are afraid they know they can turn to mom, dad, or another authority figure for help. But what happens when they are afraid of the caregiver? What if their terror comes from the same place they were supposed to receive comfort? This can leave the child not only struggling to deal with the outward circumstances but also their emotional and psychological system is aroused and they do not know how to calm themselves. As adults, they carry the same mental images and beliefs of themselves, others, and of the LORD that were constructed in the abusive environment. And they may not know how to express their need for help, or they may believe the abuse did not affect them, yet they remain captive to the lies of the enemy. The scriptures are full of examples where individuals were overwhelmed and they turned to the LORD, but if an individual has never experienced a safe place, it will be difficult to believe an invisible God could love them. The whole purpose of Christ coming was
