About this ebook
Few of us look forward to challenging seasons of our lives. If we had things our way, our lives would be problem free; however, God often seems to allow difficulties to arise so that we cry out to Him. In these moments, or seasons, of utter desperation, He often chooses to reveal Himself in fresh ways to us. Can this heartfelt revelation of His truth dispel confusion, bitterness, grief and guilt? Can we experience peace where once only turmoil reigned?
Journey with author Karen Louise as she honestly shares how the Lord revealed Himself to her through the valleys of life. See the Bible come alive through similar struggles that biblical characters may have had. In turn, look to see God in your own situations.

Introduction
SKU-000490776_TEXT.pdfMy friend, Helga, and I meandered down the cobblestone streets of a quaint Chinese town. We peeked into the colorful stalls with their various handicrafts. I stopped in front of an ornately decorated tablecloth and exclaimed in delight, That would make a perfect gift for Debbie and Jerry.
I had been a bridesmaid in their wedding party a year earlier but then had left almost immediately for a year of teaching English in China.
Karen,
Helga whispered, there is something I must tell you.
What?
I asked, surprised by the seriousness in her voice.
Your mother requested that I tell you that—
Helga’s voice faltered. Debbie and Jerry were both killed in a car crash a few months ago.
I felt my legs grow weak beneath me. We both lowered ourselves to a nearby curb. What happened?
Debbie was driving. It was late at night. Somehow the car veered off the road. They were both killed instantly.
My mind flashed back to three years earlier. That fall, Debbie and I had met at university in a Chinese History course. We enjoyed chatting and playing squash together but we never talked about God.
Then during first term exams, I had a dream. I saw Debbie standing at the door of heaven, expecting to enter, but the angel guarding the door denied her access. She turned and saw that I had been granted entrance. Somehow I had known the secret but had not informed her. She gazed at me with disbelief and grief, that I, her good friend, had never revealed this most important fact to her. With that, I woke up with a start, for I knew that God was trying to communicate to me through this dream.
Despite my fear that I might lose our friendship, I wrote a letter to Debbie, asking her if she would be interested in studying the Bible together. When she did not respond over the holidays, I assumed that the idea did not interest her. However, the first day back at class, she enthusiastically exclaimed that not only was she very interested but her boyfriend, Jerry, was interested in studying the Bible as well.
During that term we experienced some special times around God’s word. Debbie eagerly shared with her engineering classmates her new found love of God. However, during my year in China, Debbie’s letters to me included some questions. Her last letter verbalized her struggle to believe when those closest to her dismissed the reality of God.
Now, hearing of her death, I excused myself and told Helga that I just needed to be alone. I trudged outside the city walls and sat on a concrete barrier in the rice fields. God,
I cried, where is Debbie?
The Lord did not respond to my question. Instead He addressed my responsibility. Karen, you did what I asked you to do. Now you must trust Debbie to me.
Although my heart mourned the loss of one of the most transparent friends I had known, in the midst of grief I knew God’s peace, for God had spoken.
During these times when the world becomes dark around me, I know that I need to run to God. He holds the truth about Himself, about me, and about my situation. In His time and His way He often reveals this truth to us, if we will but wait for the revelation to come.
In this book I focus on how God reveals Himself to us during the valley times
of our lives.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me
¹ For the psalmist David, the valley included near-death experiences. Some of us can identify with him in this, some of us cannot. However, we have all passed through valley experiences or low times. During these times, the enemy often seeks to plant tiny seeds of doubt in our minds regarding the goodness and love
