Foreword
My mother has lived an extraordinary life. She was raised in a junkyard with her sister and three brothers. Early in her life, she had dreams of singing gospel music. She sang in several gospel groups and cut various records with those groups as well as solo albums. Although she had offers from professional gospel groups, she turned them down to become a wife and mother.
After a successful career as a stay-at-home mom, music called her once again. After putting off college for twenty-nine years, she enrolled in Piedmont Baptist College to pursue a degree in music and graduated cum laude at the age of forty-nine. Rather than simply entertain with her beautiful voice, she has poured her love for music into others, teaching piano and voice to young and old alike.
Recently, the stage has called my mother once again. However, this time it has called her to speak rather than sing. She has unexpectedly become a sought-after speaker at ladies’ conferences. Unlike music, which she pursued, public speaking has pursued her. It turns out she can deliver a message both with and without a tune. As an extension of her public speaking, she has become a writer and again proven that she is successful at whatever she sets her mind to accomplish.
Her life has not always been easy. When she was eighteen, she went through the windshield of a car and spent months on crutches and undergoing dental and facial surgeries. In her late thirties, she was diagnosed with polymyositis and rheumatoid arthritis, severe muscle and joint diseases. I have personally seen a time when she could not get out of the bed because of the pain these diseases inflicted.
In addition, she went through severe emotional trauma as she cared for her parents after they both developed dementia and her father succumbed to severe Alzheimer’s disease. My mom is still looking for healing from this emotional trauma. However, I am happy to report that God healed her from the diseases of polymyositis and rheumatoid arthritis. These are not diseases for which doctors offer the hope of a cure. However, the Great Physician can and will cure any disease or pain when it is within His plan to do so, and I am glad that it was in His plan to heal Mom.
Through her life’s highs and lows, her successes and failures, and her moments of joy and pain, my mother has always sought to put God first and to give Him praise regardless of the circumstances. In each event of her life, she attempts to discover God’s truth and His purposes. The stories in this book are a sample of the events that have comprised her journey through life thus far and of her desire to know God better through these journeys. I hope that you enjoy this book and that it will encourage you to look for God in the daily events of your own life.
Introduction
Have you ever been told, You don’t have the sense God gave a goose
? It’s an old expression, and if someone is saying it about you, it probably means you’ve done something silly or downright stupid.
In your mind, can you envision our feathered friends? If so, you might be thinking that statement is absolutely true. Here they go, waddling about aimlessly with their long, skinny necks. Right on top of the long, skinny neck is a teeny, tiny head. How could a head that small carry a brain large enough for making it in the world as a goose? How much sense could a creature like that have?
More than you can imagine.
The beautiful Canada geese have been such a thrilling part of my life for a long while now. I have taken these creatures straight into my heart, and they’re under lock and key. Believe it or not, these geese have become a vital part of my spiritual walk.
I can hear you wondering, What in the world is she talking about? Geese are nothing more than messy, noisy, rude, and sassy birds. By the way, did I mention they’re messy?
After you have read As the Geese Fly, I think you, too, might begin looking at my geese in a whole new light. You might not think about them as rude or mean. You might not mind the mess. You just might begin to look up every time you hear the geese as they fly overhead.
So if you are ever told that you don’t have the sense God gave a goose, then you can smile and nod. You will know the truth about our wonderful, awkward, out-of-proportion, highly intelligent friends.
Lord, if You give me the sense You gave a goose, that will be fine with me!
The Background:
A God of Pictures & Object Lessons
Bushes, Donkeys, and Walls
God wanted Moses to deliver a message to Pharaoh. He spoke to Moses through a burning bush. He spoke through a bush that would not burn up and to a man who would not shut up. Moses just kept right on talking to God and telling Him all the reasons he could not possibly do what God was asking him to do. So the Lord gave him another object lesson (as if a bush on fire and yet not burning to ashes wasn’t enough). He asked Moses to throw down his staff. He did, and it became a snake. God then told Moses to pick the snake up by the tail. Oh my! It became a staff again!
God didn’t want Balaam to go with the princes of Moab. Balaam couldn’t get his donkey to keep walking down the road. One might have thought the donkey was simply doing what donkeys do best: being stubborn. When that donkey started speaking to him, you can bet that Balaam was the one listening then.
Moses heard God’s voice through the fire of a burning bush. God used a talking donkey to get Balaam’s attention, a donkey that spoke as clearly as any person. Basically, God can use anything He chooses to get our attention. If these examples aren’t enough to convince a person that God is in charge and can do whatever He chooses to do through you or in spite of you, then I don’t know what could!
Hebrews 1:1 puts it like this: God has spoken to people throughout time in many different ways. One of these ways is through pictures. He realizes that many of us, including me, are the kind of people who need a picture, a visual aid. If you want me to know it, understand it, get it, or believe it, then show me a picture or an object lesson. Bring on the burning bush or the
