About this ebook

Born Twice, Died Once
The book reflects the ups and downs of a walk with Jesus. Read it and compare it to personal walk of faith with Jesus Christ. My hope is that it will encourage you to look at your life according to your faith. God, through Jesus Christ, is able to sustain you and keep you through life. He is our victor. He paid the price and already died for your sins.
So please read this book. Its a matter of life and freedom from sin or a road to condemnation. After you read this book, you will know beyond a reasonable doubt that Jesus loves you.
Many may think, Oh! He needed to God! But thats ok right now. Whether I needed God or not, let me say that is a reality that there is God. And its not you. The earth speaks of the many realities of God and His Christ. I challenge you to read this book. It will surely lead you to a deeper relationship with the Creator of all things, including mankind.
In His grip,

    About the Author

I would like to dedicate this book to Curtis and Max; two friends who God allowed me to personally lead to the Lord Jesus Christ. May you shine as stars forever in your heavenly mansion. To Tony V., may the Word of God always direct your path, wherever you are. A special thanks to Joe, who God brought into my life 17½ years ago. He is an inspiration, always challenging me, and toiled with me long days, and nights to prepare this book. And always, to Veronica. Thanks be to God our Savior, Jesus Christ.

    AUTHOR’S NOTE

It is my heart’s desire that you come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior. If my testimony does nothing but plant a small seed to prepare for your growth in the Lord, then I will praise God for it! Please be sure to read the Romans Road at the end of the book. I would be honored to hear of your journey with the Lord:

    UPTOWN

I often look around my current suburban home, complete with the cars, RV, motorcycle, green lawn, full icebox and large screen TVs, and begin to think of where I came from. Life in Uptown in the ’60s and ’70s is a far cry from life in Skokie today.

Uptown is a Chicago neighborhood on the north side. Roughly surrounded by Foster Ave. on the north, Irving Park Rd. on the south, Lake Michigan on the east, and Ravenswood on the west. A very large area. But my life mostly took place around Wilson and Broadway. The roughest of the rough. There were movie houses, the Aragon Ballroom, a ray of hope called Truman (City) College, and the Green Mill—once owned by Capone’s man, Machine-Gun Jack McGurn.

Uptown rolled like the El train that ran above it on Broadway Avenue. There were no Starbucks or Borders Bookstore like there is today. Only beat down greasy hot dog stands, busted milk bottles, trash everywhere, egg stains on cars, broken apartment windows, blood on the sidewalks, open fire hydrant caps, cars propped up on milk crates, smashed windshields and wrappers—not from candy, but from drugs. Used syringes and used condoms littered the streets and grounds of the hood.

My family and I often sat on the front porch on hot summer evenings watching it all. Fire hydrants open, people laughing, fighting, shouting, loud music, game going on everywhere. I’d sit and watch it all with my mom, my Greek grandma whom we called YaYa, my brother Paul, and my 3 sisters. My mom and YaYa would tell us stories about our family.

I had 4 siblings that I knew. My mom sometimes talked about her first baby who passed away shortly after birth. A boy. An older brother! She also very vaguely talked about another son whom she gave up for adoption. She was made to choose to keep either him or me by the system and she chose me because she thought I was special. She always said I was special. I wonder if she knew at the time that I was only special because of Christ in me.

It wasn’t until I was about 16 that she told me that my step-dad was not my real father and that my real dad was killed in the Korean War. Many years later my aunt told me that I was a
