    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

FIRST AND foremost, I want to say thank you to my husband Ron. You have been my biggest source of encouragement throughout this endeavor and when I didn’t think I could do it, you kept cheering me on. Every step of the way you believed in me, and are constantly showing me a depth of love that I had only dreamed of. Each year gets better and better and it’s mainly because of the hard work you put in to being a strong man of God. I am constantly amazed at the depth of integrity and character you show to those around you and I’m proud to be your wife! You are and always will be my Knight in shining Armor! Forever and always—Pooh

Next I’d like to thank Justin, Jacob, Abigail, Slayton, Allison and Daniel. From the moment I became a mom, you all have brought more joy and happiness to my life than I deserve. There has never been a more worthwhile job than watching you grow and I’m thankful that God allowed me to have the opportunity to be your mom! I love you all to the moon and back! I also want to thank Amanda. You are the best daughter-in-law I could have asked for. Thank you for loving Jacob and being his rock. You are an answer to many years of prayers for a Godly wife!

Thank you to my sisters and brothers-in-law—Richelle/Dan, Renee/Dave and Denise/Larry—I couldn’t ask for a better family! Thanks for putting up with the baby all these years . . . . it’s a hard job being the favorite. But seriously, I couldn’t have been given better sisters and BIL’s. Each one of you has made a huge impact on my life and taught me something that will stay with me forever.

Diane Mix-Thank you for being a very faithful, constant friend. Your level head and quiet wisdom has been a blessing to me. You rock.

Heidi Burdick for being like a sister and loving me no matter what. I’m sure we were separated at birth! And I can’t wait until we get to heaven and everyone realizes that the glorified body is actually a size 14.

Thanks also goes to my ladies . . . . thanks for praying for me even when I couldn’t get my eye balls over there on Wednesday mornings because of working on this. Each one of you means so much!

Marilyn—Thank you for everything you do. You are generous beyond belief! God has given you a gift to love people unconditionally. Thank you for being the very best Mother-in-law anyone could ever have.

And last but absolutely NOT least. Mom and Dick. You walked with me through some pretty crummy situations and put up with way to many bad attitudes and I thank you for not giving up on me. Dick, I hope you know how much I love you. You and I may not share the same blood but you are Dad to me. Mom—if you did nothing else from this day forward, you would have still done more for me in a lifetime than I can ever thank you enough for. Knowing that you are down on your knee’s praying every day means more than you know. I hope when it’s all said and done my kids will have as much admiration for me as I do for you! I love you mom.

    PROLOGUE

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11(NIV)

LIFE IS just a compilation of stories. Some good, some bad. Whatever the story is in a person’s life, we can all learn from those tales. As long as we take the time to listen. So much precious time was wasted in my teen years ; I walked through life sullen and too self-absorbed to be bothered with adhering to the life lessons my grandmother and mother were trying to teach me. I don’t believe at that time I was conscience of the fact that they were trying to instill anything important into my life. Advice and admonishment fell on deaf ears because I assumed that I had all the answers or could eventually figure them out on my own. It wasn’t until I realized my need for guidance that I began to take notice of how my mom was living her life, and how the stories my Mother told could be a template for my life. By taking some of their advice, I could start to roll with the punches, wade through the muck, and smile at the small things. Why? Because I began to adhere to their advice and I continue to receive my mom’s instruction and wise counsel.

Our forefathers have much to offer and eventually we may be telling our stories to the younger generation, hoping they will be willing to take heed to our words. One of my favorite quotes is by Albert Mohler as he states:

"You are an ancestor to someone yet to come. If you live your life knowing you are an ancestor, that will change the way you make your decisions, the way you live your life, the way you love your wife"

I wonder how often we would look at our circumstances and change our attitude or how we would respond if only we pondered that quote. To some, we are the older generation. Whether twelve, twenty-two or eighty-two, we are older than someone. We should take the opportunity to be leaving a lasting legacy and have our decisions and attitude about life impact the people who look up to us. Whether you believe it or not, or even want it, people look up to us or sometimes down on us depending on how we live and what we say. If we understand that fact, then wouldn’t it always be a wise choice to live in a way that uplifts and teaches others? And better yet, for those of us who profess to be believers, it would be best to live in a way that points people to Christ.

I like to have life come easy at times, I don’t relish the struggles, and I don’t enjoy being molded into a better person when it causes pain. However, when I truly think about it, the instances I have grown and learned the most have been through difficulties.

Taking the stories about my mother’s life to heart and adopting them to my life have inspired me to be all that I can be as a mother, a wife, and friend. Jeremiah 29:11 says "For I know the plans I have for you. To give you a future and a hope". As a person who has a relationship with Christ, I have to trust that He wants the best plan for me. Christ’s purpose for me is not to just keep me out of trouble or make me happy. He has a plan for me to use every opportunity to serve Him and direct others to Him. When I understand that, I can trust that not only is His plan the best in EVERY circumstance, I can believe that Gods plan not only keeps my future secure, but it gives me hope when challenges come my way. How thankful I am to a God who loves me, and you, enough to do that. Jeremiah 29:12-13 goes on to say that In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me in earnest, you will find me when you seek me.

Christ allowed all my Mother to go through some deep valleys and scale a few mountains. Not because he wanted to watch her fail, but because Christ knew He could trust her to use all of it to the glory of Him. I’m thankful that she she looked for Him in earnest and sought Him during her life. It wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t always fun, but I’m glad she did.

Come with me on a journey and let me tell a few memories about what I learned. Life is not only a compilation of stories, but it’s full of lessons . . . . we just have to be willing to listen and learn.

    CHAPTER ONE

My thoughts are completely different from yours, says the Lord. And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8,9 (NIV)

NORTH CHEMUNG, New York was a great place to be during the depression. Tree-lined roads meandering through the hillside climbed in elevation with each mile, giving one the sense they could leave all their cares behind. The country store at the end of the road was the
