    Heavenly Daze - CAROL-ANNE BOARD

    Chapter 1

She stood there on the aft deck watching the wake of the boat. The sun was just setting on the horizon, it was a beautiful moment but not for Darcia, as the tears rolled down her face uncontrollably.

She had been a beautiful dancer. The sensational dancers had danced their way from England to the Follie Bergere in Paris and then on to Hollywood.

Darcia had met a budding French composer and the two had fallen madly in love. Unfortunately he was already engaged to be married to another.

When Darcia found out she was pregnant she was devastated, she couldn’t tell him, this had become so wrong, the shame, the embarrassment. There was only one option for Darcia and that was to leave Hollywood and return to England.

She jumped on a boat to go back home and there she stood feeling so alone. As she stood there with her thoughts she knew she would have to have the baby as abortions were not an option in the 1920s. She also was aware that she would never see her one true love ever again.

When her friends had told him of Darcias whereabouts and why she had ran away, he immediately called off his engagement and went to England to find his true love. He was going to ask her to marry him and in a perfect world live happily ever after. Eventually he was able to obtain Darcia’s home address and he wrote and wrote to her, but Darcia was never ever to receive any of his letters.

Years and years went by and she lived her life with her younger sister. They were two spinsters. They were very well to do ladies, well respected in their community and were pillars of society. Went to church every Sunday and everyone liked them.

One day when Darcia was reaching her eightieth birthday she had a row with her younger sister. Her sister shouted at her saying that Charles did come after you, looking for your hand in marriage, but mummy sent him away and told him that you had met somebody else.

He did carry on writing to you. He carried on writing to you till the day he died. You were never to receive any of his letters and he never did marry.

Darcia died shortly after of a broken heart.

    Chapter 2

Kathy blew her nose for the umpteenth time as she realised that she had come to the end of her book and had got through a whole box of tissues.

Wow look at the time!! I’m going to be late she shouted"

Kathleen was a state enrolled nurse at her local hospital. She quickly put on her uniform and ran to work. Lucky for her it was only ten minutes away.

She arrived late in the middle of handover. Matron was not impressed. Kathy new she would have to pay she always did. She was bound to be given extra shifts. Christmas and New Year was coming up and she knew she would have to work it.

She lived with her boyfriend Ben they rented a beautiful Georgian ground floor flat. It seemed that they spent very little time together these days as their work always seemed to have to take priority.

As Kathleen had managed to get to the end of her shift, Matron asked, before she knocked off could she check on Mrs Humphries.

Kathy opened the curtain of Mrs Humphries cubicle, the frail old lady was sitting there looking so apologetic. What’s the matter Mrs Humphries, are you ok? she asked.

No dear, I have just been sick!! She handed Kathy the cardboard trilby. Mrs Humphries had put tissue on the top so the vomit wasn’t visible, as Kathy took it away she went and put it into the macerator.

When she returned frail old Mrs Humphries asked "Did you bring me back my teeth dear? They were under the tissue.

Poor Kathleen she had once again done another 10 hour shift and she was shattered. When she arrived home there was a letter waiting for her from her father. Her father lived in Spain on the southern coast. He wrote how he missed her and how she should come and visit very soon. He also mentioned that it got a little chilly today and he nearly had to put socks on!! Ray was a real joker.

Kathy really missed her dad and yes maybe soon she would go and have a holiday, she had certainly earnt it.

Ben had run her a hot bath and cooked a lovely meal for the pair of them.

As she lay soaking her mind wandered to a white silk sandy beach, with waves dancing on the shore, the sun shimmering on the waves and the warmth of the sun on her body, with the smell of the sea air and a seagull squaking above.

Then all of a sudden she was awoken with Ben banging on the door Don’t fall asleep, dinner is ready!! he shouted. For a moment Kathleen could have been in another world, so peaceful and so tranquil, so relaxed. She got out of her lovely warm bath dried and put on her robe.

As she sat there having dinner with Ben she knew she wasn’t happy. He was a lovely man. Good looking, great physique warm and kind. But she knew in her heart that something was missing. She wanted a life an exciting one, something that gave her passion.

    Chapter 3

Xmas came and went and she worked it as she knew she would. Then came New Year. Once again she had to work. Matron had given her the night duty.

When midnight came all the staff on the ward held hands in a big circle and sang Auld Lang Syne. But something Magical happened to Kathy that night. Something that was to change her life for ever!! Back in the circle whilst

everyone was singing , Kathy had an outer body experience, she was able to look on at herself and all her colleagues singing away. She realised just how unhappy she had actually become.

Although her life seemed to be run by routine, with her work and even her boyfriend. Ben had asked Kathy to marry him and she had said yes. But a date was never discussed.

Ben’s family all lived in the same street. Their mother in one house then three doors up lived the grandmother. Across the road lived the other grandmother with their father. Kathy knew if she married Ben her life to would become part of the street.

Kathy wanted to live, she wanted the passion the excitement, she knew what she had to do, and from that moment on her mind was made up. She was twenty years old with a jour de vive, she just knew there was more to life and she wanted a piece of the action.

That morning New Years Day, Matron came on duty. Kathleen handed in her notice. What!! exclaimed Matron I can’t accept this, this is madness, you just need time to think Kathy. Just take a holiday for sure you will feel better

Kathy new this had to be done, as hard as it was, she was owed holiday and took it from that moment. She also knew if she didn’t do this now and strike whilst the iron was hot, that she would probably be talked out of her decision and would never end up going at all. She said all her goodbyes to her friends and colleagues with tears as she walked away although she felt very emotional, for the first time in her life she knew that she had made the right decision.

As she made her way home her doting and loving boyfriend would be waiting for her with absolutely no idea what was coming.

Kathy was dreading this, she said the words over and over in her head but no matter how many times, she knew it would cut like a knife. There was no easy way of saying it. But in her heart of hearts she had given the relationship her best shot.

Now this was her time. Ben was such a good kind man and she knew he loved her very much he didn’t deserve the hurt she was going to bring, But Kathy also knew that she deserved a life and to be happy. Ben in time would meet someone else. He would again be happy, just not with her.

Once again she said her tearful goodbyes to Ben as she went through departures at Gatwick airport. She was boarding her plane to Gibraltar, where her father was meeting her.

    Chapter 4

Once she arrived her dad scooped her up and gave her a big hug, he knew she needed it, She had told him everything on the phone. Her father just told her to come straight over and he would have her room ready for her.

After a couple of weeks of moping and relaxing Ray told Kathleen if you are going to stay out here you will need a job young lady, so tomorrow we will go and find you one.

The next day arrived and true to form Ray was up and ready to go job hunting.

Let’s try Marina Bay or Main St he said looking overly enthusiastic. Kathy didn’t seem too impressed.

As we arrived at the Marina there was a large pizzeria called Biancas. It was closed for renovation, but through the window I was able to spot a man walking around.

Eventually I caught his eye and he came over. I asked in my sweetest voice Do you have any vacancies? Yes replied the big burly man We are looking for bar staff

Oh I replied I was rather hoping for a waitressing position,

We can do that, if you come back on Monday, we can start you off!!

I couldn’t believe it I had just got a job. That was easy dad I said

Dads reply was I think he just created that for you!!

I didn’t care, for me this seemed to be the start of my new life.

I arrived for work on the Monday morning as asked, and was given a tight t shirt and a pair of trousers as my uniform. I had exceptionally large boobs and now they looked twice as big in this t shirt. With long blonde hair and an hour glass figure I had always had a lot of unwanted attention from men. Well they would certainly love me in this top.

This was my first day and my first shift and nothing was going to spoil it.

I just knew that I was going to like it here. The wages weren’t fantastic but the tips were good. The staff were all friendly, with a mix of English, Gibraltarian and Morrocans.

On my second day I came rushing into work as there was a huge que on the Gibraltarian border. As I took my jacket off, Phil my boss slapped me on the back and said have a good shift I will see you later and with that he left.

The day was really busy and everyone seemed so happy, for some reason they just kept smiling at me. It wasn’t till the end of my shift and I was sat down counting my tips that someone peeled a sign off my back. Saying IF YOU THINK I HAVE A DD SMILE!!

I knew then that my boss had stuck it on when he slapped me on the back at the start of my shift, I saw the funny side and we all had a good laugh, and hell I had made loads of tips. I was happy.

That week a boat came up for rent in the marina, it was a six berth sailing boat called Spey Lass. The owner was prepared to rent it out to me so I could live on it. It seemed the perfect solution, no more late nights walking over the border to get to dads house in Puente Mayorga. I spoke to my dad and he also agreed.

That weekend I moved on to my own little boat on the marina, I was a stone throw away from my work, as I lay on my foredeck with my drink and my book relaxing and sunbathing.

I didn’t have to go to work for another couple of hours so I wanted to make the most of it. I was starting to feel very happy. My life had changed and so much for the better. Thinking of Ben and my work seemed like another lifetime ago.

That afternoon whilst back at work, we were so very busy. I had eight tables on my station all in a line by the wall.

As I was running past delivering food to one of my tables I heard someone sneeze. It was a very loud TISSUE automatically without even looking I shouted Bless You people started
