One Place in Time: A Special Place in a Splendid Time the Story of the A&R Marshall Shipyard
()
About this ebook
From 1928 to 1968, the A&R Marshall, Inc. shipyard was one of the largest and most successful marine supply and service yards on the Atlantic seaboard. Martus recalls both the colorful boats and the even more colorful craftsmen who built and maintained them.
Even so, this is not the story about yet another pretty boat, boat designer, or builder. Rather, it is the story of the people who serviced and took care of the crafts the designers and builders created for many of the legendary yachting personalities of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
This memoir is filled with nostalgic remembrances of a special place on a splendid time. Working from taped interviews with of interesting and distinguished nautical figures, Martus has crafted this very personal memoir to preserve the golden age of her region. There is a growing interest in recapturing these colorful times, from restorations of old boats to building replicas of maritime preservation as a whole, and Martus shares these stories to capture the imagination of a new generation of ship enthusiasts.

Introduction
By the Late Vic Romagna
This is a story about growing up on Manhasset Bay; about the places, people and what made it so special for me.
Our family moved to Port Washington in the early 1920s for a number of reasons, such as the direct commuter line into New York City, the school system reported out well, and people with ambition lived here, and of course, the Bay was ideal for sailboat racing along with many other activities.
To keep my brother, Len and I out of Dad’s racing
hair, he bought us a 16 ft. Meteor class sloop which we raced three times a week during the summer months, and we crewed for the older sailors on weekends. The Meteor class was hotly competitive; we had a fine instructor and an astonishing group of talented boat owners. We literally spent all our time in this sport and were avid learners to keep from being disgraced while racing. The amazing Bay offered so much that we took it all
