Author’s Comment
This book is about the adventure of Sam and his dog, Spot. It highlights the closeness of a young boy and his dog who stick together through strange, incredible circumstances and events. It is their adventure to a place lost in time and space—a wonderful and beautiful place, but also a very dangerous place. It is a place that tests and bites; it’s a place like no other. It’s the Lost Valley. Sam and Spot find a real adventure in a place that they find and will remember forever.
The night has a light that’s bright;
The light is now in sight;
The call is heard in the night.
The Lost Valley awaits with bite.
The Lost Valley calls you;
Love it, fear it.
It is real,
But can you take it?
Will you enter the mirror with Sam and Spot and go on an adventure of a lifetime? Or do you fear to enter?
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, is it me who I see, or is it not me? Who do I really see in me? Mirror, mirror, tell me what you know. Mirror, mirror, show me what I want to see and then let me enter.
The book tells a story, but it can only live within.
Life is what it is, and then it is.
Look and you may find it; search and you will find it; imagine and you will create it.
Chapter One
Saturday Morning
The early morning sun was shining bright. Spot was awake and looking out the window on his back legs, with his front legs on the sill. Spot normally stayed quiet until Sam woke up, but this day he was restless. He barked twice.
Sam started to wake up. With his eyes still closed, he said to Spot, What is up with you, Spot?
As he spoke, Spot ran next to his bed and licked him on the cheek.
Sam said, Okay, I am getting up, Spot. You obviously have too much energy today.
Spot gave Sam a small bark and another lick on the cheek. Sam rubbed and opened his eyes and said, Yes, Spot, I can see it is a sunny morning. Yes, I know it is Saturday today, and I know you want to play outside.
Spot barked and went over to the window again to look outside. Sam sat up in his bed and said, Spot, it has been a long time now since our last adventure. I think I would like to read another story in the old book.
Spot jumped up and down, twisting his backside from side to side as he quickly wagged his tail and gave several small barks.
Okay, okay, Spot. Let me get up, and then I will get the book.
Sam got out of bed, dressed, and then went into the bathroom to wash his face; Spot was right by his side the whole time. Sam let Spot out of the back door to go out and do his morning toilet business, which he usually did under the big tree in the backyard. He then came running back to Sam, who was waiting at the door for him.
Let’s have some breakfast first, Spot,
said Sam.
They both walked to the kitchen where his mum was making breakfast. Sam’s mum said, Good to see you are up, Sam. I will have breakfast ready soon. Sit at the table.
Spot gave a little bark, and his tail was wagging from side to side.
Sam’s mum smiled and said, Yes, Spot, you too.
She patted his head.
Sam sat at the table while Spot sat by his side, as always. After a short time, Sam’s mum placed his breakfast on the table in front of him.
Sam said, Thanks, Mum,
and smiled. His mum smiled back.
Spot looked up at Sam, and Sam said to Spot, Yours is coming, Spot; be patient.
Spot had his mouth open, and his tongue was hanging out to the side. He is so cute, thought Sam, and a loyal friend. Sam’s mum placed Spot’s bowl next to him. Spot was very hungry and rushed to his bowl. Spot was always hungry in the morning. He ate a lot but always managed to burn it off. He was an active dog and loved to run around and play. Sam always gave Spot some food from his plate. Spot would eat his food and then place his head on Sam’s leg, looking up at him with those big, loving eyes Sam could not resist.
Sam said to his mum, Thanks, Mum. I have finished my breakfast. Now I am going to my room to read and then play a little.
I will make you a special lunch today.
What is it, Mum?
Wait and see, Sam. I will call you when it is ready,
his mum replied.
Okay, Mum,
said Sam as he took off for his bedroom with Spot right behind him.
Sam went into his bedroom, and when Spot entered, he closed the door. Sam and Spot were looking forward to another story in the book—it had been long enough now.
Sam reached up to the top of his bed to get the old book. It had four stories. He had read one and traveled there after saying magic words. Sam now knew that he could travel to a story in the book only once. It had been some time since his adventure to the land of Notts, and he was ready to take another adventure with Spot.
Spot was always ready for an adventure as long as it was with Sam. Sam knew that the possibility of danger or mishap was always there, but he thought the excitement was worth the risk. Now he was restless and craved another adventure with Spot. Spot also seemed restless and in need of an adventure. Sam sat down onto the bed and held the book in between his legs.
Well, Spot, it is time to go on another adventure,
Sam said. He then opened the book. Spot gave a little bark—he was excited. As he looked up to Sam, Sam turned the pages to the second story and said, The next story is about to begin. Listen carefully, Spot; it is important.
Spot turned his head from side to side as he waited for Sam to begin.
Chapter Two
The Magic Mirror
T his story is titled ‘The Magic Mirror.’ It’s a story of time travelers who go back in time. They have an accident and end up in a time of huge dinosaurs and in a land of volcanoes, primitive tribes, and strange plants.
Sam read the story, and Spot listened. Sam thought the story was amazing and interesting, but when he reached the end, he thought that the story was not at all finished. At the end of the story,
