The accurate language to use for people raising children alone and people raising children with their partner has been a controversial issue especially in research. The languages used in describing different families vary, for single parents, we have ‘sole-parent’, ‘lone-mother’, ‘lone-father’; ‘absent-parent’ used for the parent that is not with the children; ‘custodian-parents’ used for the parent in custody of the children ‘non-resident father’ used for the father that is not living with the family; ‘co-parent’ and ‘intact-home’ used for home with both biological parents living together; ‘non-custodian parent’ used for the parent that is not in custody of the children; ‘in and out parent’ and ‘near and far parent’ are also used for separated couple; ‘motherless family’ used for families without the mother; ‘fatherless family’ used for families without father; ‘shared-parenting’ used for separated or divorced couple that their children spend a particular time with the parent they are not living with as agreed by both couple; ‘blended family’ used for family that consists both biological and step children of one or both couple living together.

Some other category of single parenting may fall on either choice or chance. An example of single
