    Peggy Curtice Harris Background Peggy Harris is a laymember of the Beltsville, Maryland Seventh-day Adventist Church. She has presented Biblical Hospitality Seminars to Churches, federation workers and womens retreats. She served on the national board for the Association of Adventist Women (AAW) as Director of Special Events, President Elect, President and Church Liaison. She developed the Woman of the Year for AAW. In 1992 Peggy developed and chairs W.A.S.H. (Women and Men Against Sexual Harassment and Other Abuses). This organization has produced materials for lay members and church leaders on the subject of abuse. The W.A.S.H. web site (www.w-a-s-h.org ) contains all the materials developed by W.A.S.H., links to other organizations as well as Biblical Hospitality. Writing has become an important hobby with production of a fellowship dinner manual for her local church. Published works include Beginnings and Endings, Deaconess Ministry published by www.adventsource.com, articles, poems for church periodicals, and devotionals for the Womens Ministry devotional books.       When the storm of persecution really breaks upon us, . . . many who have strayed from the fold will come back to follow the great Shepherd (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6, p. 401). The love of God still yearns over the one who has chosen to separate from Him, and He sets in operation influences to bring him back to the Father’s house . . . A golden chain, the mercy and compassion of divine love, is passed around every imperiled soul (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 202). Heaven is waiting and yearning for the return of the prodigals who have wandered far from the fold. Many of those who have strayed away may be brought back by the loving service of God’s children (In Heavenly Places, p. 10).

      Chapter 1

      Where He Leads Me

      This thought God is calling His children home has been pounding in my ears for some time now. It keeps coming to the foreground when I hear a story or my path crosses unexpectedly with some one. I’ve seen enough evidence now that God is truly calling His children home to be ready for His soon coming. But there is a fear that comes along with this thought—that sometimes we are not ready for His children to come home. How can He bring them home if we are not ready? What is it that is holding us back? What is keeping His children and us separated?

      Recently I had to make a decision on how to use a plane ticket I had purchased the year before since I was able to get a cheaper rate if I purchased two tickets at the same time. I had to use the ticket before the year passed or otherwise the one trip would become the most expensive trip I’d ever taken! My thoughts turned to several possibilities and I put out several feelers as to where I might go. I asked God for guidance in directing me to someplace where I might be most useful. It seemed that the best place to go would be to visit my sister-in-law in southern California. That’s what worked out in a remarkable way and soon preparations were made, reservations made and phone calls to various people.

      My dear sister-in-law, Mavis (wife of my deceased brother who died an untimely death at age thirty three), had been led by my brother to become a church member. He taught her everything he could remember about the Adventist Church and in the process brought himself back into the church. After his death she was left to raise their three daughters and one son from her previous marriage that was still living at home. She had struggled to send the daughters to academy when they became high school age. She was floundering and drowning with tuition bills. We were unable to help financially as we also had tuition bills for our children. I suggested that she talk to the pastor about the church tuition plan most churches have to help needy students. She did but was told there was no money available. So she did what she had to do in order to keep them in school—take another job. I think she had three jobs some of the time trying to make ends meet. As a result she ended up having to work Sabbaths, which separated her from attending church.

      Even though for years Mavis did not attend church, even after the children were out of school, married and gone from home, she always believed the Adventist message and we kept in touch. A few months before my trip she had been laid off from work and was living in her desert community home she had purchased some time before. She had told me about a nearby Adventist Church in Ramona, California which was about an hour from where she lived. Meantime, she was attending a small community church just a couple of blocks from her home and was getting acquainted with people in her community.

      I contacted the pastor of the Ramona church and got acquainted with him via phone and e-mail. This is an English/Spanish church that had declined in membership when the nearby San Pasqual Academy was closed. Since many of the teachers (who had attended the Ramona Church) moved away, the little church was struggling.
