    Preface

My name is Benjamin Selby-Hele, and like many of you, I’m sure, I have assumed many jobs throughout my life. I know how easy it is to feel as if you are identified by your job title. I know what it is to lack a sense of self-worth and to wonder about personal identity. I have experienced both. Finally, I did something about it.

Creative by nature, a personal trainer by definition, and a health advocate in practice, I began my professional life as a graphic designer, but then decided design wasn’t for me. Escaping the country, I then worked as a sailing instructor at a summer camp in Kent, Connecticut in the United States for two years. I worked intermittently back in Australia as a laborer on my dad’s building sites, saving money. I’ve worked in office jobs, in hospitality, in construction and in many gyms. Most recently, I worked as a personal trainer on board cruise ships out of the United States. That experience got me to where I am today.

I am currently part owner in my own business, I Choose Awesome. Operating as a studio gym in a number of different locations, we specialize in offering motivational and health-and-wellness retreats and services at our sites in various resorts. We cater to all groups of people, but especially to corporate businesses. Our retreats allow employees to get out of the office environment and experience the full benefits of nutrition, exercise, and mindset reform through all-inclusive retreats. As you might imagine, I have had the opportunity to work with a significant number of people throughout my life with a view towards dramatically improving their quality of life by empowering them with the tools required to do so.

In May of 2010, I participated in a motivational speech-off competition on national radio station NOVA. Contestants were assigned a person of fame to motivate on the air. Having conducted many motivational seminars, I fancied myself a motivator, and I liked my chances of winning.

At the time, Jessica Watson, a young Australian girl, was about to finish her epic sail around the world. She was set to become the youngest person to do so. With only a handful of days left, it was up to me to motivate her to continue on.

    This is how it went:

In a world where people are governed by the winds of mediocrity, you chose to elevate your quality of living and maximize the individual you are.

Irrespective of whether or not you broke a record, your awesome journey has captivated and inspired an entire nation!

At the completion of your journey, you will have spent almost 200 days at sea—alone! You have shown us in such a short period of time just what can be achieved when you choose to maximize every second of every day—and all at such a remarkably young age!

Some people waste their entire lives choosing ‘average,’ blaming their circumstances for where they are in life. But what they fail to realize is that the same mediocre winds fall upon us all. But it’s not the blowing of the wind that determines our destination, is it, Jessica Watson? No! It’s the setting of the sails!

Jessica Watson, you have shown us just how to choose awesome! Safe sailing!

It was a bit of a hit. Jessica finished her journey, and life went on. (Unfortunately, due to a technicality, her voyage didn’t qualify as a record for the title of youngest person to sail unassisted around the world.)

I didn’t win the competition, but it got me thinking. Constantly, people recognized in the public eye—celebrities, sports figures, people making news, etc.—receive the motivation they need to continue their jobs and enable their lavish lifestyles. But what about the masses? What about those of us doing our jobs diligently on a day-to-day basis, striving to make ends meet and to look after our families? Aren’t our efforts worth recognition? Don’t we deserve our own motivational anthem to inspire us every day?

I decided I wanted to give back to the broader community and help those who struggle for motivation and purpose on a daily basis— those of us who struggle to establish true purpose in the work we assume, who see our jobs purely as a means to an end.

I’ve learned from experience that the ability to motivate yourself to perform a job you’re not all that enthused about can be a significant challenge. However, it’s amazing the change in persona that can take place as soon as you start to train your brain and get your mind into a new way of thinking. If you get your mind healthy, the body will follow.

This book takes fifty job descriptions and provides people who work at those jobs with their awesome equivalents. It is intended to give people their own motivational anthem for their field of work, inspire them on the days they feel less than inspired, and reaffirm the importance of their positions on a daily basis. Life is all about choices, so instead of choosing average, we can choose to be awesome. That beats being average, doesn’t it?

You have only one race to run, and that is your own. Stop worrying about the other guy! You can’t change him; you can only change yourself. Maximize yourself, and surpass your expectations! Your mind determines what is possible, while your soul surpasses it! Be proud of what you have and what you can offer the world. Embody it and share it with everyone you come into contact with. Love the person you’re becoming!

This book was created to be a motivational tool. It’s designed so you can tear out your job excerpt and place it in a spot you will see it and read it every day. Just as you should exercise your body every day, so should you exercise your brain. As soon as you get up in the morning and before you go to bed, read and embody your motivational excerpt. Changing your perception of your work can have an amazing impact on the
