      Introduction

      Why is it that God seems to be so distant? I pray but it seems like he is deaf. Does he not hear me when I call out to him? These were the words of my dear friend. In her struggle, she mistakenly perceived that God did not love her. Having known her for years as a sincere follower of Jesus Christ, my heart was grieved that she felt this way.

      Thankfully, during the evening I helped her to see that God did love her, that he cared deeply for her, and not only did he hear her prayers, he also had a great plan for her life. She knew that God imparts talents to people but was discouraged because she was unaware that God had already given her a unique purpose to fulfill.

      I asked her if there was anything she wanted to do or something she wanted to accomplish. She expressed a desire to write a book on health and nutrition, her area of study as a recent graduate from a nutritional science program. I then asked if there was something hindering her from pursuing that goal and she could not think of anything.

      Because I knew that writing was one of her passions and another was teaching others about health and nutrition, I encouraged her to start writing her thoughts down on paper concerning what she believed might encourage others to pursue a healthier lifestyle.

      As we hugged and said goodbye, she expressed how grateful she was that I listened to her personal struggle about what to do with her life. Now she was able to see that God had given her a unique gift of being able to write with an intentional purpose. With my words of encouragement she had an improved sense of self, her self-esteem was increased, and she was then empowered to pursue her passion to write a book that would greatly benefit others.

      Interestingly, she is not alone in her pain. For over three decades of doing personal ministry, I have spoken to countless individuals who have struggled with understanding who they are and what they are to do with their lives. Undeniably, they long for a more meaningful relationship with God, but some seem to lose momentum in their journey with God. Some succumb to the lie that God is distant and not really interested in them, or that somehow God hears other people’s prayers and has a wonderful plan for other people to fulfill, but not for them. This faulty perception crushes their hope, and their hopes get deferred.

      Sadly, hope deferred is all too common. It is the place where your dreams have died, or if your dreams are still within you, somehow it is stuck. When the passion to fulfill your dreams wavers, or when apathy sets in, then your hope is deferred.

      So, with my friend’s struggle and breakthrough in mind, I decided to help people increase their understanding of God by writing this small book. Inside, you will discover eight secrets that will assist you to: resolve nagging issues of the past; increase your hope for the future; sharpen your discernment in hearing God’s voice; learn how to love others as your neighbor; and be all you are called to be. Each secret will encourage you to be more than you ever hoped or dreamed you could be. You will learn to believe in and embrace your dreams, and take steps to make your dreams come alive so that with God’s help, you will fulfill your destiny.

      Recently, I heard of a man who pastors a thriving church in California. Though from all appearances his church was experiencing great success, he was dissatisfied.

      One day he read of a quote from Thomas Kelly who, in absolute frustration, had prayed, Lord, make my life a miracle!¹ Greatly touched by Kelly’s prayer, this pastor set his heart on the Lord making his life, and the lives of those in his congregation, walking miracles.

      Determined, he then gathered a few people to pray and seek the Lord about what to do next. After considerable time in prayer, he received a plan from God wherein he was directed to ask the congregation to agree to three commitments. First, commit anew to the person of God in Jesus Christ.
