Wersel Goes to Hong Kong - Gloria Gurden
Chapter 1
Wersel Driftwood woke up and rubbed the sleep from his eyes.
To-day was Halloween, when all the goblins were about, and people let off fireworks.
Wersel didn’t like Halloween much, because he was frightened of the sparks the fireworks made.
When you’re a piece of driftwood, you have to be careful of sparks or you might get badly burnt.
But to-day was different he was very excited, because Grandfather was taking him down to the busy docks where all the big freighters loaded up, to see his Uncle Plank off on his journey to Hong Kong.
The Driftwoods were very proud because Uncle Plank had been chosen to become part of a Chinese Junk (which is a special kind of chinese sailing ship) it was being built for a rich chinese millionaire, and only the very best wood had been chosen.
It was a cold but bright sunny day, Wersel went and had a quick dip in the sea to freshen up, so he would be ready when Grandfather called him.
Then he went to find his friend Cuthbert Crab, to tell him he wouldn’t be able to play with him to-day.
Cuthbert was rather sad when he heard this, but Wersel promised he would tell Cuthbert about all the exciting things he had seen when he came back, and that made Cuthbert feel much better.

Soon, Grandfather called Wersel and off they went.
When they arrived at the docks it was very busy, with lots of people shouting to each other as they loaded the cargo with big cranes, it took them a little while to find the spot where Uncle Plank and his friends were patiently waiting to be loaded on to the ship, that would take them on their long journey.
Wersel was very interested watching the loading and unloading going on. He had never been to such a noisy busy place before.
