      Author’s Note

      This book is about the adventure of Sam and his dog, Spot. It highlights the closeness of a young boy and his dog as they stick together through new, strange, incredible circumstances and events. It is a true adventure of love and friendship with magic and heart. The story was misplaced and lost for twenty-nine years; it was found in 2010 and completed in early 2011. It was a story that had to be told. I hope it can inspire your imagination and capture your heart as it has mine. Always remember that real magic starts in the mind and lives in time and space forever. As a great story lives forever, so does your imagination.

      There is in sight,

      Day and night,

      Dark and light,

      But a crystal stays bright.

      There is a light that lives in your mind,

      so when in a dark place, look for your light, and all will be bright.

      Chapter One

      The Outing

      While Sam slept, his faithful friend Spot—his dog—looked out the window. Spot was a medium-size dog, white in color with a black ring around his left eye. He was a mixed breed with short hair and ears that lay down. Sam thought he was half-kelpie, half-Labrador. He was a slim, fit dog with a lot of energy.

      It was a lovely sunny morning, and Spot could not wait to get outside and have some fun. Of course, Spot would wait for his buddy, Sam, to wake up first. Slowly, Sam turned and rubbed his eyes, and then with half-opened eyes, he saw Spot looking at him with his mouth open and his tail wagging. Sam said, Hi, Spot, and Spot gave a small bark back. They were great friends, together all the time. They loved playing and going on adventures at home, at the local river, and in the park.

      Sam’s dad was a scientist and worked long hours. He would also bring his work home to spend more hours on his studies and projects. Sam loved his dad but felt that he had missed out on things like fishing and camping trips with his dad. All his friends went with their dads on trips, but the only time Sam and his dad went anywhere together was when his mum would insist that his dad take him somewhere. That was not often. His dad would have excuses for not being able to go, so Sam spent a lot of time in his room, imagining great adventures with Spot. Still Sam’s dad was good to them in another ways, and he loved them.

      Sam’s mum was the stable force in the house. She kept the house, made the meals, and looked after them, especially when they were sick. She helped with his homework and always encouraged Sam to be the best he could be.

      So, Spot, where are we going today? said Sam.

      Spot sat up and looked as Sam. He moved his head from side to side and then barked twice.

      Sam said, You do remember that we’re going out to the country on an adventure with Mum and Dad—right? With his tail wagging, Spot turned his head from side to side and barked once at Sam.

      Good! Let’s get ready then, Sam said to Spot. He jumped out of bed, opened the bedroom door, and ran out to the kitchen where his mum was preparing a picnic basket for their fun day out.

      Sam said, Morning, Mum! Spot was by his side, wagging his tail.

      Good morning, Sam! Are you ready for our picnic outing? Spot turned his head slowly from side to side and gave a little bark.

      Yes, and you too, Spot.

      Sam replied, Yes, Mum, I’m ready and excited.

      Well, Sam, you’re not going in your pajamas, are you? So go and change into your clothes that I put on your chair earlier this morning.

      Okay, Mum, but first I’ll go say good morning to Dad.

      He’s in the front getting the four-wheel drive ready, said Sam’s mum.

      Followed by Spot, Sam ran to the front door, opened it, and rushed to the four-wheel drive where his dad was cleaning the windows.

      Moring, Dad!

      Spot barked once while wagging his tail.

      Sam’s dad turned and smiled at them and said, Good morning, Sam and Spot! It’s about time you got up. Now go get ready.

      Okay, Dad, said Sam, and Spot added a little bark. Sam took off to his room to dress, with Spot right behind him. Sam quickly got dressed and went back to the kitchen where his mum was.

      Mum, did you pack my chocolate bar? I’m looking forward to it.

      Yes, Sam, I packed it. Spot turned his head from side to side and stared.

      Yes, Spot, I have something for you here too.

      Sam had loved chocolate since he was two years old. Even at eleven years old now, he still loved his chocolate. Spot was six years old and was not allowed chocolate even though he loved it. It made Spot overactive and caused him to make a mess in the house.

      Sam’s mum finished packing the picnic basket and then went to get some fruit from their tree in the backyard. With Spot, Sam went to find his dad, who was now in the garage getting rope, maps, water containers, and tools ready for the outing.

      Dad, can we help? said Sam.

      No, I have everything I need ready now, so go and help your mum.

      Mum is nearly ready, Sam replied.

      So he and Spot walked off to the lounge. Sam thought he could watch some TV while waiting. Spot was excited. He wagged his tail from side to side and barked three times.

      Settle down, Spot. We’ll be going soon, said Sam.

      Sam turned to his favorite channel and started to watch TV with Spot lying by his side. His favorite show had just finished, so he decided to go to his room and play with Spot for a while. Sam turned off the TV and went into his room. He placed his figures of wizards, witches, fairies, and creatures on the carpet.

      He turned to Spot and said, "Spot, you’re the wizard. I’ll be the fairy today. You’re going to be a bad wizard today, and I’m a good fairy. I’ll send my dragon
