    Acknowledgments

I would like to thank all who encouraged me to write Overcoming Emotional Burps: various ladies from groups and Bible studies as far back as 2005; my Pastor, Juan Pulido, who from time to time gently prodded me to continue writing. Also, I want to thank Ed Holmes for critiquing my work and Marlo Sherman for offering her editing skills. I want to express my gratitude to my husband, Gene, for his support that afforded me time to write. And most of all, a special thank you to my heavenly Father; He never gives up on me and continues to be patient with me through the learning process of life.

    Introduction

Picture it … small church sanctuary filled with three hundred people … you are at the altar … others are coming … suddenly, you look down, and to your horror you realize you are naked. That’s right, in the buff. I remember well the feeling of humiliation … the eyes of judgment … the ridicule … every ugly imperfection open for all to see. I tried to make my way up the aisle only to expose my nakedness to more people. I remember thinking, oh, if only someone would throw a coat over me, if someone would be willing to cover my shame! How relieved I was to wake up. I would be willing to bet most everyone has dreamt of being exposed in public at least once in his or her lifetime. Remember how you felt in your dream? Remember the relief you felt to awaken?

In this book, Overcoming Emotional Burps, we will look at how to enter into God’s place of rest in the midst of tumultuous relations and observe what happens when we expose the faults of others. We will look at fasting our words as an avenue to reach that place of tranquility with the Father, with self, and with our irregular person. When we think of fasting, our thoughts turn to abstaining from food. Certainly, abstaining from food for the purpose of prayer is found in both the Old and New Testaments. But let’s take a closer look as Father God speaks through the prophet Isaiah.

My prayer as you read the following pages is that the eyes of your understanding will be opened to the truth of His Word concerning relationships with those He has allowed in your life. In this way, He will enable you to love as He commands us to love and live in the freedom of the abundant life Jesus gave us by paying the ultimate price. I pray also that you will fall into the arms of the Father and experience a deeper intimacy with Him.

Are you ready to experience freedom to love difficult people? Are you ready to travel the path to God’s place of inner peace? If you are, then let’s get started!

    Chapter 1

    Flesh vs. Spirit

It is the Spirit that gives life, the flesh

Profits nothing; the words that I have

Spoken to you are spirit and are life.

    —John 6:63

Many years ago, Joyce Landorf wrote the book Irregular People. She defines an irregular person as the person in your life who always manages to say or do things, intentionally or unintentionally, that leave you feeling angry, hurt, or both.

Your irregular person is not the next door neighbor; you have the option of moving away from that person. Your irregular person is not that annoying coworker; again, you have the option of changing jobs. Your irregular person is that family member who, because you are related, you will encounter on a daily basis or maybe only at family gatherings. It may be a sibling, a mother or father, an aunt or uncle, cousin, or even your spouse. It’s
