40 Days of the Names, Titles, and Attributes of God - Gina L. Diorio

Day One: Attiiyq Youm – The Ancient of Days

    Daniel 7:9, 13-14, 22; Isaiah 46: 9-10

The Ancient of Days signifies the God who alone is God—the One Who Is before all time; the only One who is all-knowing, all-powerful; the One like whom there is none other.

We see this name of God in the book of Daniel, who in his vision says:

"As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.

Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire.  (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.) In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

The word translated ancient is attiyq, and it means just that: ancient or old. But it also carries the meaning of venerable or worthy of respect.

Notice the article Daniel uses – the. God is not simply an ancient of days but the Ancient of Days. He is the one who alone is worthy of our worship. He stands alone.

As Isaiah 46:9-10 says, Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand... '

Day Two: El Elyon – The God Most High

    Genesis 14:8-20, 22; 2 Samuel 22:14

This name for God appears more than two dozen times in the Old Testament.[1] It speaks to God's absolute supremacy.

Genesis 14:18-20, 22 says, And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: and blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all...And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth.

Psalm 57:2 says, I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me. In Psalm 61:2, we read, From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

And in 2 Samuel 22:14, we read, The Lord thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.

Other gods attempt to assign power to themselves, but there is no other god who has the power to create, the power to save, the power to heal—there is no god like the God Most High. Every other god must bow to the God Most High.

Psalm 78:35 says, And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

And Psalm 92:1 says, It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name O most High.

We worship God not because of what He has done for us but because of WHO he is—the most high God.

Day Three: El Roi – The God Who Sees

    Genesis 16:6-14

In Genesis 16:6-14, we read the story of Hagar, Abram’s mistress of whom Sarah was understandably jealous. For context, because Sarah had been unable to give her husband Abraham children, she suggested Abraham have children by her slave Hagar instead. Abraham agreed, but when their plan worked, Sarah grew bitter towards Hagar.  So Abraham said to his wife:

"’Your slave is in your hands,’ Abram said [to Sarai]. ’Do with her whatever you think best.’ Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her. The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. And he said, ‘Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?’

"‘I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,’ she answered. Then the angel of the Lord told her, ‘Go back to your mistress and submit to her.’ The angel added, ‘I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.’ The angel of the Lord also said to her: ‘You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard of your misery. He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.’

"She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me.’ That is why the
