About this ebook

Are you looking for a different kind of devotional? Well, you've found it.

A lot of spiritual insight can be gleaned as we read classic literature, but please understand that all of these insights are things I thought while reading. This is in no way an analysis of the book as far as what the author was thinking or what he wanted the reader to take away from the story. I once had a reader make a comment to me about my own thoughts when I was writing one of my novels. Whatever she thought I was thinking while writing had actually never occurred to me. That was when the light came on in my mind of why I didn't care for analyzing works of literature. When I teach my students, I want to know what they got out of a specific work. Sometimes they are very insightful and we have the best conversations.

Many of these works in this series are not blatantly Christian, but that doesn't mean Christ or an aspect of the Christian life is completely missing. In fact, it's the opposite

So, read one chapter of the work and then read the chapter I've written here.

Spiritual Insights from Classic Literature - Ruth ONeil

    Chapter One

...now the house was dull and grey as everything else.

How would you like to live in a world that was dull and grey?

When we think of the story of The Wizard of Oz, more than likely what comes to mind is how colorful and beautiful everything is over the rainbow in the movie version of the story. However, Dorothy's life before that was dull and colorless. She didn't even realize it until she was exposed to something completely different.

That's what life is like without Christ, dull and lifeless. The world will wear us down and it might happen so gradually we may not even notice that our world has become exactly that: dull and grey. But once we allow Christ to enter in, that's when things become new and vibrant. But even as Christians there will be times when we feel completely alone in the world, much like Dorothy did after the winds of the storm carried her far away from home. There will be times when we feel as if we are the only ones trying to live righteously. It may seem like others aren't even trying.

When we feel that way, we must be a light in a dark world. Be careful not to let other people influence you. Instead, we must be the influencers.

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14).

We reflect the light of Christ as shown in John 8:12.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'

You can be a light in an otherwise dark and dreary world.

    Chapter 2

"It is a long journey, through a country that is sometimes pleasant and sometimes dark and
