    “Virtuous” follows the shocking measures a vindictive ex-wife is willing to go to in order to find her abusive ex-husband. Set in the quiet Florida town of Hialeah, we meet Mrs. Margaret Watkins in her secret rendezvous with her informant, Victor Romanov. Short but very vivid, “Virtuous” is an interesting take in noir fiction.

    “Cecile,” on the other hand, takes a more melancholy approach as a sickly woman returns home, years after having a fallout with her only relative, in the hopes to make amends. Set in a low-cost apartment complex, her aunt Cecile is the absolution that she seeks. Slow-paced and heart-wrenching, “Cecile” takes what is known about mortality and forgiveness and gives it a poignant twist.

    “Divorcing in the 16th Century” is a comedic look at one of history’s most controversial monarchs, Henry VIII. In desperation to produce an heir, Henry convenes with his most trusted advisor, Thomas Wolsey, and sweet Anne Boleyn to come up with a tactic that will allow him to rid of his wife, Catherine of Aragon. A parodical snippet of a popular historical fiction topic, “Divorcing in the 16thCentury” will remind you why the Tudors was one of the most notorious dynasties.

    Last but certainly not least, "Shan's Box" is a fantastical tale of humility. Conceited Shan wants nothing more than to enjoy her fresh-squeezed Floridian orange juice but all that comes to a grinding halt when her doorbell rings. Set in a bungalow upstate, this story will make you appreciate what you've got.

    Lian De la Cruz is a budding film writer and storyteller who is currently working on getting her Bachelor’s in Creative Writing for Entertainment from Full Sail University. Her credits include short stories Cecile and The Room (Currently Virtuous), published in The Scarlet Leaf Review, as well as three short stories featured in the anthology Boricua Beauty. She was also an editor for student-run literary magazine Caminos Convergentes. Other than coming up with convoluted plots for her characters, Lian can be found obsessing over how soft her dog’s ears are.

      This book is the bittersweet culmination of an unfortunate chain of events. Early in my Creative Writing program, I was asked to create short stories based on writing prompts and as much as I tried, I wasn't really feeling the prompts so I just did a halfhearted job to get it out of the way by the deadline and left it at that. Little did I know that I'd be asked to develop them throughout my program in the form of peer reviews and revisions for my professional portfolio, ultimately ending in you bestowing your valuable gaze upon these
