About this ebook

When Sandy-Sue (S.S.) Morrow traded in her Beauty Queen crown to become a librarian she went from the high life to no life. Maybe the inheritance in Louisiana was the change she needed. But when her uncle stepped in and offered her the trip of a lifetime... who could resist a trip to Europe? Louisiana could wait- for three months, anyway.

But living out of a suitcase grew old in a hurry, so Sandy-Sue cut short the trip and returned home, planning to claim the inheritance her Great Aunt Marge had left her. Determined to make a clean sweep of her old life and leave Sandy-Sue behind, she changed her name to Sady, and bought a bus ticket to Sinful. There had to be a life for her somewhere between the limelight and the bookshelves of her past. So she travels Sinful to learn what her uncle is hiding. And along for the ride is Matt Meadows- Sady's handsome, but unwanted, traveling companion.

On The Bayou - Kamaryn Kelsey

    Author's note:

This is Book 1 in the SS Beauty series.

The series is not about Fortune Redding, Sinful, and the Swamp Team. SS Beauty is Sandy-Sue Morrow and the series is about her and the life she makes for herself.

This is a work of fiction. Other than Jana DeLeon's original story elements, the characters and names are creations of the author's imagination.

    CHAPTER 1

Who said beauty queens were stupid, spoiled, and vain? Okay, so not everyone said it out loud, but they thought it. Sandy-Sue Morrow was in the former category. Not the vocalizers, but the one before that. Yeah, the assumed witless beauty queen. But she didn't want to spend her life with that hanging over her, so she decided it was time for big changes.

Knowing she had more brains than hair, the adult Sandy-Sue left the business and became a librarian to prove them wrong. Her doting mama nearly disowned her when she turned her back on the pageant circus. But SS proved to the world she had more to offer than the ability to keep from doing the splits on a high gloss stage in six-inch heels.

As the head librarian in a quiet New Hampshire town, Sandy-Sue found time to indulge her passion for knitting. She was an accomplished needle woman thanks to her discerning mother who realized the hobby made a good human interest angle for reporters doing stories on the young up-and-coming beauty. Plus, knitting had a practical side, being easy to take on the road when they traveled and Sandy-Sue could whip out a pair of socks for a gift in no time at all.

It seemed a shame she had no close relatives to gift with her yarn crafts. As far as she knew, the only family left was her father's brother, John Morrow. When Sandy-Sue's father died, John took it upon himself to keep an eye on his brother's widow and her young daughter. Tragically, a few years after Sandy-Sue became a librarian, her mother died in a freak accident involving a shopping cart, a watermelon, and a jar of broken olives in the produce section of the Fast Dash grocery store.

Sandy-Sue thought she chose her vocation carefully. When one wanted to leave the glitz and glamour lifestyle behind nothing screamed regular, normal girl like becoming a librarian, right? Wrong- she never imagined being a librarian was worse than being a beauty queen. But it was definitely worse. It evoked images of boring, bun wearing spinster with reading glasses on a neck chain, and no sense of humor. Perhaps she overcompensated when trying to balance out her life. She went from no time for a personal life to having lots of time but still no personal life.

She was an attractive, intelligent, and funny woman with large caramel brown eyes, long dark hair, and a pretty smile. A few local men asked her to dinner. Then they found out what she did for a living and folded that into an equation with her name. Once they factored knitting into that mix, those now frightened men only saw visions of an old cat lady with them at the dinner table, not a beautiful young woman.

So Sandy-Sue thought about trying something new, but other than her former career training she possessed no marketable skills. Fortune 500 companies only wanted beautiful employees if they came with a college degree. College didn't sound interesting, so she stayed with the library and her knitting, wondering if she'd grow old and die all alone, her body found under the balls of yarn she rolled for fun. Perhaps she'd be crushed by a mammoth wool ball like the one that now rivaled a beach ball for size. Or maybe she would be discovered in the library basement clutching an old microfiche machine. With a sigh, she wondered how her plans for a happy life took such a depressing turn.

Then one day she received a letter from a Louisiana estate attorney informing her she was the sole beneficiary of her Great-Aunt Marge Boudreaux's estate. With no desire to maintain two households, she decided to sell the Louisiana inheritance. So after submitting a request for a leave of absence from the library, she made plans to visit Sinful, Louisiana and catalog the household items before selling. Fearing Great-Aunt Marge was a pack-rat, the idea of spending the summer in Sinful sorting through stacks of old newspapers and bags of used margarine containers lacked appeal.
