About this ebook

Are we involved in politics from the moment of conception? Is there such a thing as family politics, politics in friendships and at the workplace? Is politics more global than government? Sylvia Weber, MSN, CNS, the author of A Guide for Compassion in Political Power believes that the answer to these questions is YES! Sylvia discusses the role of power and controlis it for us , for power over others, or to use and share for the good of the many? Do we live our lives consciously in the moment, aware of the impact we have for today and the future? Have we integrated our spirituality into how we live our lives? What is compassion and its role in our interactions with others and the world around us? How do the concepts of power, control, consciousness, spirituality, and compassion relate to all political arenas? Sylvia answers these questions, as well as sharing strategies for being more comfortable with ourselves and how to bring compassion into all the political arenas were involved in. Even though A Guide for Compassion in Political Power is applicable in all of life, almost all of the examples are related to government politics.

    Foreword

For many years I have been encouraged by colleagues, family, friends and mentors to write and bring into the world what I teach and what I live. I agreed. For more than fifteen years I have taken courses, taken notes, written and struggled. In July 2008 I spoke with a dear friend, Sherry Carter, about my struggles. She suggested, Let it go. When it’s time Spirit will give you a sign you won’t miss. Two weeks later I was at Pumpkin Hollow Retreat Center at the Therapeutic Touch (TT) Advanced Healers Invitational. Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN, co-founder of TT, gave a series of lectures, one being on compassion. During the talk we started talking about where we bring compassion into our work and lives. When I mentioned the political arena, Dee said, Sylvia’s writing a book called, and mentioned the title. There it was and it took me by such surprise I couldn’t remember the title. When I caught my breath and asked her what was the title of the book I’m writing, she said she didn’t remember, it just flowed through her. Holly Majors, MSN, NP, a nurse and TT colleague, then said, I was so impressed I wrote it down, The Compassion of Political Power. After the class, another nurse, TT colleague and a good friend, Denise Coppa, PhD, NP, showed me a note she wrote to me before Dee mentioned the book, Sylvia, your book is about compassion and politics and here are some books you need to read. And so this guide was born.

There are many life experiences that have led me to this point and I would like to share a few that had great significance. I have always been involved in political activities and one of the strongest tests to my commitment to live a life of compassion came when I ran for the state senate in 1990, 1992 and 2006. In 1990 there were 2 of us who were running for a seat that the incumbent had held for many years. To maximize our chances of unseating him we decided to
