About this ebook

When you go shopping and buy eggs, you check the carton to see if any are cracked. If one is cracked, you remove it from the carton and replace it with an uncracked egg. Nobody seems to have a need for a cracked egg. It might not be bad, but what if it is? I have felt like that egg. Though the outside is cracked, they have trouble looking past the fact, not considering the truth. Fact: Im cracked. Truth: I am made to be the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. All things are possible to him who believes. I can do all things through Christ (His Anointing) which strengthens me. This is the story of one who dared to ignore the facts and advice of experts who said, Go home, get married, and cope with what life brings your way. But he chose to live life in Christ to its fullest. This is not a religious story but a story of faith.

    Foreword

W hen I moved to Perry, Oklahoma to become the Pastor of Perry Assembly of God I had the honor of meeting Larry Koch. The first time I met him he was working with a group of individuals who were attempting to overcome drug and alcohol addictions. I really didn’t know how to take him; he had two prosthetic arms, with two pinchers for fingers. He reached out to shake my hand. I didn’t know what else to do but to reach out and shake the pinchers. It was really a life changing experience to see someone unafraid of having a disability. He had no shame, and he still has no shame.

Since this moment I have had the honor of knowing Larry and working side by side with him. His attitude is contagious! I can remember not too long ago sitting with Larry’s brother in the waiting room of a hospital while Larry was having surgery. His brother shared with me that if we could just bottle up Larry’s attitude and sell it we would be rich! This is such a true compliment of Larry. Not once has Larry let his disability be an interference for what God wants to do in his life.

As a Pastor I see people everyday dealing with low self esteem. When someone has low self esteem it affects every area of their life, and it becomes a difficult task to help them see themselves as God sees them. I believe that when people read this story it will be a life changing read and will encourage them to trust in God and know that God has made them unique, enabling them to embrace how God has made them, as the scripture says in Romans 8:31, If God is for us, then who can be against us?

It is my hope that Larry will come to mean as much to you as he has to me and so many others. So, I dare you go ahead, read this book and see how this amazing testimony of the Grace of God can change your life, as well.

-Brett K. Nation, Pastor of Perry Assembly of God

    Dedication

T his book is dedicated to my family and friends who have helped me through this life with encouragement and love.

Also, this book is dedicated to the memories of my mother, Alice Kirtley Koch and my brother Charles who waits in heaven. And all of the prayers and Christian workers who help establish my feet on the good ground of the Solid Rock!

Great thanks and appreciation goes to my sister in law Ina Rose and Michelle, my personnel friend, who is like the daughter I never had, without whom this book would not have happened. I must mention Pastor Brett Nation and Pastor Brian Ahern and also my sister Marian who has kept me going.

    The Early Days

O n the day I was born the family gold fish froze to death. Big brother forgot to put a log in the fire box and it went out. Instead of putting a log in that morning, my brothers went out and played in the snow. My sister Marian stayed with Grandma Koch. Later that day dad called a neighbor who drove two miles to check on them. It snowed that day up to my brother’s knees. Ahh, did I say his knees? His knees were only six inches high.

At the time, we lived at the Perry Lake, the city water supply. Later my dad, a city employee, became the caretaker at Daniel’s Field, the high school athletic stadium. The family moved to Daniels Field and lived in the visitor’s dressing room, which had been intended for the visiting teams. Other occupants were huge black and orange centipedes and scorpions!

Daniel’s Field was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps of sandstone. The north end was the football field with stadium stands connected to the baseball field. The stands were also made of sandstone with dressing rooms at the end of the football section.

My mother would send me out to play in the morning and I went back in when my brothers and sister came home from school. It seems like the whole world was my playground and the trees and behind the out buildings were my bathroom.

I watched the Perry Maroons football team practice and run laps. One day they were not doing what Coach Daniels instructed; so they had to run laps, and I joined in and ran with them. I thought it was fun! While I was running, the coach hollered; Look that little boy is out running you all. If he beats you back, we will be running all evening! Needless to say, the team was not overjoyed with my running skill’s. I didn’t know high school kids were permitted to say or know the words they said to me; so after that I quit running and got out of the way.

One day the Blaine School football team (the Black School) came out and practiced. I remember saying something stupid, not a racial slur, and running from them. As I did my Uncle Larkin caught me by the arm and said, Boy, they are God’s children and you better respect them.(Jn. 1:12,13 NKJV)

I always listened when he spoke. My prayer young people, is that you will always have an ‘Uncle Larkin to speak into your life! I’ve remembered that my whole life. My siblings and I were taught to give respect to all of our uncles and aunts. We were never permitted to call an aunt or uncle by his or her first name. All our parents insisted we respect all adults and address them as Mr. or Mrs. or Miss; which I did almost all the time. We were taught to honor those of age and those in authority.

I’m not sure at what age I was when my brother and sister developed polio-myelitis, I was in the second or third grade. I came down with it several days later, loosing lots of strength and energy. Gratefully it never developed into full blown polio. My aunts had us exercise our muscles by moving around in washtubs of water to maintain muscle tone, and they made us take naps.

At a later time my brother Charles became very sick. He was throwing up things I’d never seen before. My mother was very concerned, if not scared. My dad called Dr. Coldiron and he came to the stadium to see him. He found out that my twelve year old
