Music Ministry - Merlyn J. Ruffin

    morning.

One evening in April 1996, I felt an urgency to pray, so I knelt down and had an experience that would change my life. I began with praise as I normally do. At one point during the prayer, I stopped talking and began to listen to God. God said, You will be the full-time minister of music at your church. At the time, this did not make sense because there was not a full-time minister of music position at the church. There was a part-time position, but someone was already in it. This was puzzling yet intriguing. By this time, I had become the director for the youth and young adult choirs at the church. Working with the choir was something I really enjoyed and was passionate about, and under my leadership, the choirs grew musically and spiritually. The thought of doing something I was so passionate about full time was exciting, but how was this ever going to happen?

Three years later, a position was posted at my church for a director of the music and worship arts ministry. It was at this time that I finally shared with my husband that God told me I would have that position. I officially applied and the wait began. The process was slow. I would periodically check with the administrative office on the status of the position because I was getting no feedback. Every time I would call for an update, the answer was the same: Still receiving and reviewing resumes.

My child, I hear your prayers. If I answer them, it’s because I’m increasing your faith. If I delay them, it’s because I’m increasing your patience, endurance and perseverance. If I do not answer, wait. I have something better for you. The best is always for you.

I often got discouraged but would remind myself that I knew I heard this from God. Whenever I got particularly discouraged, God would send someone to encourage me. It was usually someone who had no idea that I applied for the position and always someone who had no idea I was fretting about it. On one occasion, a member came up to me and shared that God wanted me to know that everything He promised is truth and it will come to pass. When the devil tries to say otherwise, give him the truth and make him a liar. On another occasion, I opened an email at work that was supposedly a link that was to route me to virus protection software. Instead, when I clicked on the link, it took me to an electronic card with an audio message that said:

My child, I hear your prayers. If I answer them, it’s because I’m increasing your faith. If I delay them, it’s because I’m increasing your patience, endurance and perseverance. If I do not answer, wait. I have something better for you. The best is always for you.

Six months after the job posting, my pastor asked me to excuse myself from Vacation Bible School and asked if we could talk. He wanted to know what God said to me concerning the open position. I told him what God said as well as the confirmations God had given. God gave me the job description even before the job was posted. My pastor admitted that he had done an exhaustive search around the country in an effort to fill the position. He shared his frustration with a colleague who responded, That must mean that the person you are looking for is in the house. My pastor finally conceded and scheduled me in for an interview the following week. The interview lasted one hour. Thirty minutes after I returned to work, I received a call offering me the job.

I hail from a musical family and have been involved in music ministry since childhood. My siblings and I grew up singing at several local churches in our small north central Ohio town. We were often asked to do an A and B selection for an afternoon program at one of the churches. I sang in school, church and community choirs throughout my life and served in a leadership capacity for some of the musical groups. When I met my husband, it was literally a match made in heaven. He too was passionate about music. He came from a musical family and shortly after our marriage, completed a bachelor of arts in music. He went on to complete a Masters of Music Education and then completed a PhD, also
