    Introduction

    The Bible is a multi-faceted book, one that includes history, poetry, parables, dietary and health principles, as well as advice on wise living, all of which seem reasonable and relatively easy to understand. But there is another facet of the Bible which is mysterious, even frightening: the prophetic words spoken by many different people, including Jesus Christ, concerning events to take place in the end times, at the end of the world, events that will be horrifying and cataclysmic in nature.

    Why is there anything in the Bible that foretells the future? Why trouble us with what seems like an onslaught of gloom and doom? And is there any point in knowing these things? Can we do anything about it, or are we mere players, as Shakespeare said?

    To answer these questions, especially the question Why, we need to look at the very beginning of creation, where the Bible tells us a spiritual battle was being waged in the heavenlies between God and a created being, called Satan. This spiritual warfare is the foundation for understanding Bible prophecy.

    Our modern western culture has rejected absolute standards of right and wrong and good and evil, asserting that no one can know what is right for someone else, that the situation governs the choices one makes, not some arbitrary, ancient laws.
