Dedicated to the ever-present, great shepherd Jesus Christ and all that are called into His service. The author expresses special appreciation for godly educators at the graduate seminary. Introduction
As a young minister out of Bible college, I was introduced to a colorful, dramatic literary work written by Harold Bell Wright. His Shepherd of the Hills was set in the beautiful Ozark Mountains. Wright describes a pastor who left a world of cities, modern conveniences, and cutting-edge technology, along with a successful lifestyle, only to step into a backward, simplified world of hill folk. He serves a well-known local family, tending their sheep in Mutton Hollow. The pastor encounters these backwoodsy characters which the family doesn’t withhold their forthright opinions, and discover a real beauty and peacefulness in their simple way of life. A series of gripping situations and thrilling incidents leads to a connection with the locals, establishing successful relationships.
The shepherd of this story serves as a reminder not to forget the simple concepts that reflect the essence of spiritual leadership on a primal level. It may take courage for today’s spiritual leaders to step back and revisit the basic principles that led them into their service. One will possibly find a fresh challenge to boil things down to a simple yet effective service among a deluge of the many modern distractions, advances, methods, and changing cultures today.
Shepherding the flock in the postmodern era proves to be a viable and indispensably gifted role. The leader is given for the church’s survival and successful mission. Postmodern society’s perception of a pastor conveys the idea of a professional vocation, and rightly so. The shepherd strives to remain current concerning issues of government regulations regarding pastor, church, and law relationships, spanning fiscal health management to safety in the sanctuary and the newest cultural transformations.
The congregational leader learns to integrate superlative executive management and coaching skills in combination with technological-driven multimedia sources ranging from simple PowerPoint presentations to podcasts to animated productions. He or she networks with cohorts and fosters relationships that enable success in his or her personal and professional arena. The high-tech-savvy modern shepherd continues to set pace with the latest trends of communication skills and effectively update methods to present the relevant gospel of Christ to a postmodern, pluralistic, changing world.
The image of shepherding the flock is applied to congregational leadership. The biblical metaphor of a shepherd is an appropriate description of a pastor. When a postmodern pastor rediscovers the basic principles entrusted to shepherd God’s people, renewed primal concepts begin to surface. The relevant insights bridge the gap from a biblical view of shepherding the flock to the modern servant leader discovering practical applications for initiating fresh awareness and encouragement to the task.
Pastoral leaders hold sacred trust, influencing and equipping the church for an effective ministry enabled by the Holy Spirit. A study of 1 Peter 5:1–4 reflects the implications of the spiritual formation, practice, leadership, role, and reward of the pastor with insightful moral, practical, and missional applications. The emphasis of this passage is asserted in verse 2: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care.
¹ Though the lead chair of the church is prominent in this script, there are timeless principles that can be applied to all churchmen and laity engaged in ministry.
Peter was concerned that leadership should be at its best. The apostle wrote this unique message to the leaders of the church to encourage them to do their work faithfully: Peter’s message to his readers is that their ‘home’, that is their identity is found in the ‘family of God’ which is the fellowship of God’s people, a ‘spiritual house’. Paradoxically, these ‘resident aliens’ are also God’s ‘chosen people’. Their identity represents an effort to equip the church for the fulfillment of its mission.
² The flock’s dependency to express their faith in Christ for their collective welfare became paramount, which also developed interdependency with strong communal ties toward one another.
The pastor’s task in relation to the flock was joined with many personal hardships and occasionally exposed the spiritual leaders to public endangerment. Times of persecution demand that God’s people have sufficient spiritual leadership. When the fiery trial would come, the believers in the assemblies would look to their elders for encouragement and direction. The shepherd’s courage and faithfulness assured the Christian community that their best interests were paramount and not founded in the pastor’s own vain, selfish desires.
Tough times expose the exact character of servant leadership, setting apart the true and faithful from the phony and self-serving. Leaders who run away in times of trouble only prove they are hirelings and not true shepherds. The servant leaders who remain steadfast through difficult circumstances do so knowing that their calling is an election sure. The lead chair is more than a vocation; it presupposes a purpose-driven life of service.
Peter begins his identification with the elders’ call to service that sparks an encouraging charge to be diligent in their duties to the flock. His address to the leaders of the church resounds with encouragement, faith, and hope, yet fosters them to follow Christ’s example of suffering and enduring hardships innocently, honorably, and nobly. The shepherds and their flocks were highly tempted to return to the world from which they came, renouncing their faith so as to protect their lives and property. Peter warns the shepherds to beware of the temptations that would prohibit them from their primary purpose of feeding the flock, knowing a far greater reward awaits the faithful shepherd.
Historical/Cultural Background
Investigation of the historical setting of 1 Peter 5:1–4 will assist our exploration of the implications found in this passage. The authenticity of the apostle Peter’s authorship of the manuscript bearing his name has been questioned. However, many commentators have argued in favor of his authorship, stating that early evidence supports the view that Peter was in fact the letter’s author, and that it fits well within Peter’s lifetime. The authorship of 1 Peter is testified by Peter himself, writing the letter with the assistance of Silas as his scribe around 60–63 A.D.
Simon Peter is one of the best-known individuals of the early church. He grew up in Bethsaida along the coast of Galilee where he and his brother Andrew were vocational fishermen. Andrew introduced Simon to Jesus, and the Lord renamed him Petros or Rock.
While living in Capernaum, Jesus personally called Peter to the ministry, and he was appointed one of the original twelve apostles. He became part of Christ’s inner circle and appeared to be the voice for the twelve.
Peter was endowed with strength, courage, and seemingly overconfidence, only to deny that he knew Christ when intimidated by a servant girl during the final hours of Jesus’ life. His faith was restored and strengthened after the resurrection of Christ by numerous appearances of the risen Savior.
On the day of Pentecost, Peter stood boldly and preached the first-recorded Christian message, with three thousand people receiving salvation. He administered bold leadership in the church by working miracles in Jesus’ name (Acts 3:11–16), with his strong defense of the faith (Acts 4:8–12), and having experienced extreme maltreatment and suffering (Acts 5:17–18). While his primary ministry was to the Jews, he assisted in opening the church to the Gentiles.
The tradition of Peter’s martyrdom in Rome is virtually unanimous. I Clement, by the late first century, accepted the letter’s authenticity, and excavations indicate a second-century memorial in Rome to Peter’s martyrdom.
³ He probably penned the letter from Rome prior to his death under Nero.
The first-century church was split by two cultures that would draw the Jewish and Gentile people to become one in Christ. The first believers, primarily Jewish, grew after the resurrection of Christ as a faction of Judaism. The Messianic Jewish community was caught off-guard by the fact that God would allow the pagan outsiders to become a part of the chosen people by their faith in Christ just as He had received them.
The church grew, changing the dynamics of its constituents where, in many places, Gentiles predominated. Exploration of the new faith’s relationship to Greek philosophies and ways surfaced. The reality of Christ became superior to the cosmology of the heathen and to the revealed shadow truths of the Jews. Gentile and Jewish Christians began to shake off old identities, finding a new common bond in Christ alone, but not without struggling through their cultural and traditional differences. The affirmation of the superiority of Christ as the central focus of faith became the heartbeat of the new Christian society.
Peter addresses this letter to strangers
scattered throughout the Roman provinces of Asia Minor south of the Black Sea (modern Turkey). He responded to the growing opposition against Christianity and the lack of official governmental support. The readers were mostly Gentile Christians who had previously become attached to Judaism through local synagogues as God-fearers. It is likely that the road to Christianity for these Gentile pagans may have included a stop at the local synagogue where they were instructed in the Torah and the Jewish lifestyle. However, it is also likely that the letter was sent to mixed communities composed of Greek Christians and dispersed Hebrew Christians living in major Gentile cities.
Homeless Situation
The society of strangers was suddenly homeless, disconnected, discredited, discouraged, persecuted, and marginalized for their faith in Christ. Some experienced for the first time what it was like to be foreigners and exiles, losing what world they had in exchange for an eternal home elsewhere. As the old spiritual song resounds, This world is not my home, I’m just passing through.
They would be encouraged not to mourn what they might lose but rejoice in the glory to come.
Peter gave life instructions for the Christian pilgrims along their journey as opposed to the life of the world they traveled through. He encouraged them to be amenable to God and not disobedient (1:14, 22). To endeavor to be holy as opposed to living the unholy life of the world (1:15). To be as servants in this world not self-centered people (2:16; 4:11); to trust God through prayer as opposed to refusing God (3:7; 4:7); to live an open translucent existence rather than living deviously (2:16; 3:16); to do what is right and good as opposed to what is wide of the mark (2:15; 3:16–17); to be temperate and respectful rather than living ruthlessly or disrespectfully (3:15).
He also advices them to love one another genuinely and give no place for hatred (1:22; 4:8); to exercise self-discipline instead of living excessively and uncontrollably (1:13; 4:7; 5:8); to live meekly and not pompously or egotistically (5:6); to refuse evil and oppose acceptance of wickedness (2:11); to agree to human rule instead of rejecting authority (2:13, 17); to be in charge of one’s own corrupt desires instead of allowing them complete freedom (2:1, 11).
