    Preface

Attitudes matter a great deal in relationships. No wonder the Lord Jesus started his teachings by highlighting nine attitudes that God loves to see in men. These attitudes are dear to the Almighty. If all men were to have them, then all problems would cease for men. And it will be all joy and no sorrow whatsoever for everybody. Mankind would suddenly be ushered into eternal bliss on the double, and the evil One would have finished his assignment and be conclusively incarcerated in hell forever.

From this we can see that all other teachings of the Messiah are just helps to achieving these godly attitudes. The main thing is how we relate with the Holy One who has created us for the sole purpose of relating with him in the giving and receiving of love. These attitudes will predispose us to achieving this common and ultimate destiny of ours.

If giving and receiving of love between man and God is all what life is about, and these attitudes facilitate doing so habitually, then the subject of this book must be the kernel of all human pursuit of godliness in its purest form.

It is with this awesome realization that the issues raised in this volume are being presented to the reader. The genuine successes that human history has recorded have shown that there is nothing comparable to knowing and doing what is foremost and critical when success in any endeavor is being pursued.

Here, we are dealing with the foremost of all foremost things and certainly the most critical of all; and we are doing this with the aim of achieving the noblest of all successes. We are dealing, in this volume, with the authority (from God) to live, which only the humble may receive; and without which eternal perdition is inevitable. For this reason, the material in this book deserves our keenest attention.

May the Lord himself situate us on the track of everlasting success by causing his Spirit to replace from our hearts all anti-God attitudes with the desired godly ones as we mentally tread the following pages in hope and in Christ’s grace.

    Introduction

When the Messiah came, he went about in ancient Israel teaching. In one of his outings, he encountered a lonely woman in the town of Sychar who seemed to need him more than any other seeker of God of that time. This observation is foisted on us by the fact that the omniscient Messiah went out of his way to await this woman at a well which was one of the destinations in her typical daily circuit.

In the rather engaging conversation that transpired, this favoured woman, made a profound statement that sums up the spiritual expectations of her time and indeed of earlier times. The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things." (Jn.4:25, RSV). Her especial favour laid in the fact that unknown to her, she had been favoured with a messianic visitation at such an ordinary occasion and in such a routine location and with such rare exclusiveness. Her huge favour became obvious to her minutes after making this statement.

As we all now know, the Messiah has come and came teaching a body of truth. Deficiency in the truth that these teachings contain have the effect of making a man’s life liable to ultimate and disastrous destruction occasioned by the inevitable barrage of the heavy rain . . . the swollen torrents . . . and the winds that often assault the houses of men’s lives. (Matt.7: 24-27). This is without prejudice to the man’s religious inclinations.

There is no hope left for man outside the teachings of the Messiah. In fact, the Lord Jesus equated following him to, living by his teachings. Anyone who is not living by his teachings is certainly not following him. For this reason, every disciple of Jesus ought to diligently study these teachings so that by them, the salvation of the eternal King might become available to him.

There is the salvation that frees us from enmity with God; which salvation we receive at the time of spiritual rebirth. There is also the salvation about which we have been warned in the Messiah’s words when he said many are invited but few are chosen(Matt.22: 1-14). It is this aspect of our salvation that this book focuses on.

Then he said to his servants, `The wedding banquet is ready, but those who were invited were unworthy of it. Go out therefore to the crossroads, and everybody you meet invite to the wedding.’ So they went out into the roads and gathered together all they could find, both bad and good, and the banqueting hall was filled with guests.

Now the king came in to see the guests; and among them he discovered one who was not wearing a wedding-robe. `My friend,’ he said, `how is it that you came in here without a wedding robe?’ "The man stood speechless.

Then the king said to the servants, `Bind him hand and foot and fling him into the darkness outside: there will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth.’ For there are many called, but few chosen."

    (Matthew 22:8-14 WNT)

Everybody who enters the kingdom of heaven, must be found to be worthy of the privilege. About this, the Lord Jesus has made clear that the heavenly Father is quite fastidious.

Any one who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and any one who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and any one who does not take up his cross and follow where I lead is not worthy of me.

    (Matthew
