      Author’s Comment

      The Magic Book is about the adventure of Sam and his dog, Spot. It highlights the closeness of a young boy and his dog who stick together through strange, incredible circumstances and events. It is about their adventure to another place through a hidden door in time and space. The Magic Book is the key that opens the door to a wondrous but also dangerous place where there is evil, greed, and cruelty, but also bravery, love, honor, and friendship. It is a place where the brave keep their eyes always open. And so must Sam and Spot, or there may be no return. Sam and Spot find a real adventure in this place they will remember forever.

      In the eyes of the good, there is a bright light.

      In the eyes of evil, there is only darkness.

      So look deep into the eyes of whom you are with and see who they are.

      Chapter One

      The Garage Sale

      Sam was looking out of his bedroom window, thinking how nice it would be if he could go out and play with Spot. He was inside on a Saturday morning because it was raining and overcast, and the ground was wet and muddy.

      Sam turned to Spot and said, If it turns out okay today, we’ll be going out and having fun, Spot.

      Spot, next to him, looked out of the window and started to bark. His tail was wagging in agreement. He started to bounce around in his excitement. Spot loved to go out and play. He loved going on adventures with Sam even more. Sam knew Spot well and understood him. It was no surprise to him to see Spot so excited. Sam smiled at Spot and patted him on the head. Sam and Spot loved being together, playing, having fun, and going on adventures together. Sam went over to his bed and sat down. Spot followed him and sat down next to him.

      Okay, Spot, let’s watch some TV first.

      Sam switched on the small portable TV set in his room and turned the channels to see what was on. Nothing was on that he wanted to watch, so Sam decided to read a little.

      Sam said to Spot, I am going to read a while, so you can have a rest, Spot.

      Spot looked up at Sam and then lay down with his head on the ground. Sam could tell that Spot would rather go outside with him. He knew Spot well, but that had to wait. Sam was reading Treasure Island for the third time; he really loved that story. He could lose himself in the story. It was a great adventure story, and Sam often wished he could go on an adventure like that. Time passed quickly while reading his book, so he thought he should look out the window again. As he stood up to go to the window, Spot’s eyes opened and he sat up looking at Sam.

      Sam said to Spot, Come on, Spot, let’s check it out.

      They both walked over to the window. Meanwhile, Sam’s mother was in the kitchen preparing lunch for the family. His dad was in the garage, working on their car. He liked to clean and check things when he had the time. Sam’s dad was a scientist and worked long hours on his experiments, sometimes even at home. Sam often thought he missed out because his dad did not have time for him. His friends would go camping, fishing, or to sports events with their dads. Sam’s dad never had time; he always made excuses to get out of things. The only time he would go out with them was when Sam’s mother insisted. That was not often, so Sam found other things to do. He would play games with Spot. Sam had a creative mind and always found a way to have an adventure with Spot. He had figures of fairies, witches, wizards, dragons, warriors, serpents, and many other animals. He would play by himself sometimes but mostly played with Spot. Sam’s mother helped Sam with homework and cared for him when he was sick. She took him to events at school when she could. Sam spent a lot more time with his mother than with his father. Though Sam’s father did not spend much time with him, Sam loved him very much. He hoped that one day it would change and his dad would spend a lot of time with him. Sam looked out the window, and it looked like it was clearing up, but it was not yet clear enough.

      Sam turned to Spot and said, Look, Spot, it’s going to clear up soon, so we have to wait a little more.

      Spot did not look happy and did not bark or wag his tail.

      Sam shook his head and said, Look, Spot, we will go out soon; but until we do, let’s play wizard and witches. Time will pass quickly. We will have fun together. Come on, Spot, you like wizard and witches. Now listen, Spot, play fair. Okay?

      Spot looked up at Sam and barked. He liked to play with Sam; so he followed Sam to the cupboard.

      Sam opened the cupboard. He took out a box, put it on the floor, and said, Spot, you can be the wizard this time, and I will be the witch. I will have the serpents and warriors; you will have the fairies and the dragons.

      Sam lined up the figures facing each other.

      Now, Spot, listen and pay attention. I will move my serpents to your left side and my warriors to the right side. I will move your fairies against my serpents, but I must warn you that they are no match for my serpents. I will move your dragons against my warriors; they have a chance. Spot, are you listening to me?

      Spot was looking at Sam intently and moving his head side to side slowly. Spot’s tail was not wagging. It was a match of wits. Sam liked to win and usually did after as he moved the figures at each other. Spot barked and decided to jump in and win the game. He knocked over some of the figures with his feet and mouth.

      Sam yelled, That’s cheating, Spot. You can’t do that.

      Spot walked off to the window with a figure still in his mouth.

      Sam said, Spot, give me that figure. He went over and took it from Spot.

      Spot seemed proud of himself as Sam added, You are a sore loser, Spot, but I forgive you. It’s hard to win against me in that game. Well, let’s see how the weather is now, Spot.

      Sam looked out the window and said to Spot, It’s clearing up. I can see the sun is out and the clouds are disappearing. Right, Spot, we are going out to have some fun now.

      Spot replied with a bark, twisting his body from side to side with his tail wagging. This always happened when Spot got excited.

      I will go tell mum now, Spot. Let’s go! said Sam.

      Off they went into the kitchen, and
