Poole was more than eighty years old when he first felt driven to write down some of the mysterious and spiritual happenings that had occurred in his life while protecting his family from serious harm. These are true, inspiring stories from his past, illustrating how to live life to the fullest with God. Gene is a long time member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, where he has served as vestryman and church school teacher. After three answers to prayer for critical health issues, he felt driven to write these stories of his family’s faith and the divine interventions that have blessed their lives. He is amazed that God has shown them so much love and is very thankful that you are taking time to look at his book.

    FOREWORD

    T hese are true stories of a family’s unique history covering one hundred years; 1913 to 2013.

    The God-given gift of Clairvoyance and Divine Interventions may make you agree with the author; What are The Odds this could happen? I have tried to place the pictures, poetry, and meditations in appropriate places. You will find thought provoking comments on the authors’ part about clairvoyance and miracles, and an audacious endeavor to define God!

    You will discover rare bits of American Indian, national and local history included to keep the stories in perspective. A friend’s true-life experience of horrifying dimensions, plus an edifying story on archeology and the early American Indian life 9,500 years ago is included. You are welcome to use a philosophic musing on the last page as advice for your child or grandchildren. There are disturbing warnings to be absorbed and understood. There are old and new pictures to help bring some of the stories and a little of the history to life.

    For the most part, to make what occurred more understandable, it is written in a narrative form. Some names have been changed to protect confidentiality. Since the author was not present in every circumstance, it was necessary to rely on facts as recorded or told by someone who was.

    These true stories are written mostly in chronological order. Occasionally I have included another event that adapts to the subject being covered; i.e. Angels or Wartime.

    To inspire others to tell your stories of life’s mysteries that you feel cannot be classified as coincidence is my hope for this endeavor! You may have experienced God’s interventions in your lifetime to instruct, or as an answer to your prayers. If you have a prayerful communion with Him, it can and does happen. You may have had assistance from an angel more than once and not realized it. There is remarkable evidence that angels walk among us—invisible, guiding and guarding: For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11. An inner voice that says, Go here, not there. As protection from evil intent or a mysterious stranger may appear who does an unbelievable act of helpfulness then disappears.

    My other desire is to issue a call to adults, to evaluate your own accomplishments and lessons learned thus far in your lives. I would suggest you start a daily journal and jot down anything you happen to recall of past happenings or decisions made (good or bad) that taught you something. From this journal, you may wish to pass on what you have learned to your children and grandchildren. You may discover how good God has been to you and yours!

    Most events occurred in or near the Parkersburg and Vienna, WV. Area., except during auto trips and while stationed overseas during WWII 1943-1946.

    Many people have developed a healthy skepticism by the time they reach adulthood, and that is a good thing in today’s world. It seems you cannot pick up a newspaper or watch the evening news without being bombarded by stories of ghostly haunting, astrological predictions, magic herbal cures, the latest yeti sightings and other wild claims. However, most adults have the innate faculties to discover the truth, to separate fact from fiction, hone their thinking skills until they realize what is true and what is intentionally misleading.

    In short, skepticism leads to knowledge, which leads to clear thinking, which leads to good decisions and to effective actions. An adult, after prayerful study, soon realizes that the Biblical teachings of Jesus and the Prophets leads to a richer, fuller life and most important, a clear conscience. That fact that you will have tried to make the world a better place for present and future generations will be your most valuable legacy.

    "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. In addition, the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

    Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

    And the God of peace will be with you." Philippians 4:6-9

    PREFACE

    I n the past twelve years I have been diagnosed as:

    •   Having cancer of the prostate.

    •   A precancerous tumor on my pancreas.

    •   Advised to get my affairs in order by a cardiologist whose Stress Test showed two arteries 80 percent blocked and damage to my heart muscle! So, how do we explain that all three conditions were healed quickly, after prayer with the laying on of hands, and before any surgery could take place? There has been no reoccurrence.

    My wife, Ethel, underwent open-heart surgery; at age sixty-two, with five by-passes. She is the only one of six children to live past 68 years. There has been a history of heart conditions in her family, but at eighty-two she continues in good health today. I could not have written this book without her help and encouragement!

    These occurrences along with other numerous escapes from harm are why I have titled this book; TRUE LIFE STORIES & MYSTEROUS INTERVENTIONS with a sub-title ‘WHAT ARE THE ODDS," 100 TO 1, or 1000 to 1? Read these true stories and you will agree, if I were to pass over tomorrow, at 80 plus years, I must count the odds as having been mysteriously in our favor!

    I cannot pretend to understand why or how miracles happen, but there are times when there is no other word for The Mysterious Interventions we have seen and experienced in our lives, and the lives of others. Jesus promised: If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth… John 14:15, 16, 17.NIV That the Spirit would empower believers John14:12-14.NIV. The Gifts of the Spirit are also addressed by St. Paul:

    St. Paul went to Corinth on his 2nd and 3rd journeys. This busy port is on the southern coast of Greece, and had a lively and turbulent Christian community; consequently Paul received several letters of various questions they brought to him. In dealing with these moral issues, Paul imparts teachings about Christ as the Wisdom of God, the Church as His body, and the Gifts of The Spirit in the Christian Community:

    1 Corinthians 4:1-2. NJ: People should think of us as Christ’s servants, stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God. In such a matter, what is expected of stewards is that each one should be found trustworthy.

    In 1st Corinthians 4:1-2 NIV: So then, men ought to regard us as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the secret things of God. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. Therefore, judge nothing before the appointed time; wait til the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts.

    Our human instinct craves explanation, even of the inexplicable. When a child dies, someone often says, It must be God’s will. As Christians, though, we have to admit that much cannot be explained. We are stewards of God’s mysteries in a way that honors the otherness of God.

    Christians call it a miracle when some event occurs in answer to prayer, spoken or unspoken, that reveals the hand of God at work. This most often occurs when our own efforts do not bring change in the situation. It has been my experience that God uses his faithful followers as channels to perform the miracle.

    On Sunday we recite Christ was born, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. That is really great news. But some have let worldly desires or conflicts with other members convince them to give up on church. Should we tell them about our beautiful House of Worship and the outreach activities; (Helping people in our neighborhood; the food pantry and clothing store, free meals, the Christmas Families Project, Peterkin Church Camps, Summer Bible School, our new organist and talented choir?)

    No, I truly believe what they need to hear is our life stories, the complicated, spiritual, personal narratives that make up the building blocks of our faith. The experiences that have helped to make us the Body of Christ!

    My wife and I have been members of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Parkersburg, WV. since the early 1960’s. There is a healing altar beside the Baptismal Font, with a pew for those waiting to receive prayers. My wife and I have received spiritual and physical renewal here. We believe, because those lay members who lay their hands on us in prayer, have felt a special calling in their hearts to serve the Master in this way; and by study and prayer are qualified for this work. People who enter Good Shepherd for the first time, sometimes remark; I can feel God’s presence in this place.

    If you haven’t found a church home that satisfies your needs; Try to remember; only God can see what’s in another person’s heart and personal situation. No church is perfect, and conflict is inevitable for we are all imperfect humans. You will never forgive anyone more than God has already forgiven you. As long as you can, give others the benefit of the doubt, and never under estimate a gesture of affection. I have rarely regretted keeping my mouth shut, but often wished that I had.

    Things to look for: Is your church reaching out to people in the community and the mission field? Is there a food pantry and clothing for those in need? and a visitation group? Is there a prayer chain to call on, emergency housing? Some have renovated an older home for this purpose. These are some of Jesus’ commands to His church and His followers.

    A friend lay on the gurney in the emergency room consumed with fear, not knowing whether he had suffered a life threatening heart attack or merely an anxiety attack. The monitors showed his blood pressure and pulse rate to be sky-high.

    The doctor came into the cubicle with the lab reports. No, he said, there is no sign of a heart attack. He laid his hand on my friends shoulder, and at the doctor’s touch, his vital signs dropped into normal range. Then he pulled up a chair beside my friend and began the needed dialogue about what was so stressing him that he had wound up in the emergency room. This doctor, like Jesus and like Saint Luke the Physician, understood both the power of a healing touch and the interactive connection between body, mind, and soul.

    Thank God for such doctors. (Have you ever experienced the calming touch of a friend’s hand in yours while undergoing a stressful procedure?)

    Read Luke’s instructions to the early church, and us today in Ecclesiasticus 38:1-4, 6-10, 12-14: My child, when you are ill, do not delay, but pray to the lord, and He will heal you. Give up your faults and direct your hand rightly, and cleanse your heart from all sin… Then give the physician his place, for the Lord created him.

    Our family has experienced many unusual trials besides illness, during this past century! A tragedy in 1913 and events during World War II, and a time my wife and I were confronted with a man intent on robbery, and also a home burglary. Strange Auto failure rescues are related. Unexplainable prophesies and incidences of clairvoyance are covered. Bullets fired that missed by inches. A drowning victim resuscitated. We witnessed God’s command by a lightning bolt. Friends willing to reveal their life stories for this book, plus an amazing archeology story, and witness to world events during the past 80 plus years. These true stories covering the past 100 years and more are told as you read this book. Like all true mysteries, these stories yield no final answers to life’s larger questions. They remind us of a divine presence in our world and lives, as close as our next heartbeat, our next breath.

    A bible verse that I love and have adopted as My Motto:

    And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.-Romans 8:28.

    I believe to depend on God’s help in our daily lives, isn’t a weakness, it’s acknowledging His power and love for us. I am further amazed and humbled by God’s mercy to our family and to myself. This is why I felt driven to put these stories down on paper. May they inspire you to learn more about life and about yourself. How to live under God’s Grace.

    May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight, Oh Lord, our Strength and our Redeemer.

    TRAGEDY STRIKES - EVIDENCE OF CLAIRVOYANCE?

    I f you want to know the future, look back. If any of your grandparents are still living, ask them to tell you stories of events in their past as far as they can remember. Keep asking them to tell you more. For indeed history repeats its self and their stories are more interesting than most history books. The stories of Christian elders can lead you literally to a life-saving faith! You may well suffer the same illnesses they have suffered. Scientists have known for centuries that the earth itself is a giant history book! The Dead Sea Scrolls have proven that the Bible is one of the most factual ancient history books in existence.

    THE YEAR IS 1913: John Wesley Hawk, a carpenter by trade, had moved his small family; Wife Myrtle Benson, with son William Franklin, and daughter Elah Moynell, in 1906 from a farm near Ripley, Jackson County, WV, to Vienna, WV, located north of the junction of the Little Kanawha River, and the mighty Ohio River. He hoped to take advantage of the better schools in Wood County. It was also a more prosperous area with a several small factories, where a living wage might be earned. Parkersburg, nearby, was the County Seat.

    He had made the day long journey to Parkersburg many times to deliver bales of wool from his father’s sheep farm to the Parkersburg Woolen Mill Co. They had stayed overnight on some occasions so he was very familiar with the Parkersburg area and the shipment of goods up and down river from The Point on the Ohio River.

    John and Myrtle’s son, Willy, nick-named Bud had completed eighth grade at Ripley, but the school system was understaffed and not all teachers had been certified for their subject matter. John is determined that his children will have a chance to receive a better education! As soon as they were settled, William Franklin Hawk was enrolled at Parkersburg High School.

    John’s father and mother, Solomon F. and Harriet Hawk, lived on a large sheep farm to the north of Ripley, and he seemed to have the Midas touch. His farm was one of the first to have an oil well drilled on. Not a gusher, but enough to give them a tidy retirement fund. So, one of Solomon’s first purchases was a new-fangled Model T Ford.

    Of course, he and Harriet will drive up that crooked Rt. 21 to Parkersburg, {Vienna} to see his grandchildren, and get some of Myrtle’s home cooking! A humorous old gentleman; When asked to have another helping of fried chicken or piece of Myrtle’s famous peach pie; He would answer; My sufficiancy has been fully suracified! or Good Lord, woman, do you want me to walk the floor all night? Nellie will never forget how embarrassed Bud’s girlfriend Mary, was last fall when he had asked her to Sunday dinner, and when his mother asked John’s parents; How is grandson Jonathon and his new bride Bobby Lee getting along? Solomon tipped his chair back, and boldly pronounced Pretty good, I’d say; Jonathon’s father said that after the wedding, they never came out of the bedroom for three days, except to eat and go to the outhouse! Harriet punched his arm.

    But for all his outspoken ways, Grandpa Solomon was a firm believer in the Bible, and could quote scripture as well as any preacher; Let not your hearts be troubled. He that believeth in me shall not perish, but have eternal life… Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, (and) endures all things (1st Corinthians 13:7.) Solomon and Harriet were fun to have around.

    It is a cool spring morning on May 13th, 1913. A day the Hawk family and surrounding small community of Vienna, WV. would not forget for a long time.

    The son Willie or Bud, as he was lovingly called by his family and friends was nine years older than his sister Nellie and had graduated from Parkersburg High School two years before.

    The first in his family in those days to accomplish this honor! And with enough high marks that his father purchased a gold Elgin pocket watch with fob and chain, for his son in honor of the occasion. (This was before wrist watches.}

    Son Bud as his father called him had hardly eaten any breakfast that morning. Sometime during the night his younger sister Nellie had awakened the entire family with her crying and carrying on from a nightmare she had. She had aroused her mother and pleaded Don’t let Bud go to work tomorrow! He will get his head cut off if he goes!

    Her father, John Hawk, worked as a carpenter at the Parkersburg Steel Mill, along the B & O Railroad parallel to the Ohio River. After completing high school, his son Franklin had obtained work as a finisher at The Vitrolite Glass Plant located along these same tracks six miles to the north in the village of Vienna. The plant had located here due to the large quantity of fine silica sand, used in making glass, found in the area.

    Five other glass plants eventually located here; Universal Glass Co. (Milk & Whiskey Bottles),

    DuMuth Glass Co. (Glass tubing & medicine bottles), Corning Glass Co. (Corning kitchen ware and Specialty Industry glass), Vitro-Agate Marble Co. and Fenton Art Glass {Nationally known decorative glassware), (Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass—succeeded The Vitrolite Co. In 1950) However, in 1913 The Vitrolite Co. produced a high temp hardened glass used in the building industry in a variety of colors including black and white for store fronts and
