About this ebook

Go to any bookstore and browse through the books on leadership and you will find thousands of definitions of a leader. One will say that leaders face adversity with fortitude; another will say that a great leader conducts effective and productive meetings; another will say that leaders have virtue, ambition, or imagination. But you and I have seen people in leadership positions who are incredibly smart, others who manage meetings with great finesse, and others who have mastered important skills, but yet cannot command a following. We have also seen people who have none of those traits and yet have tremendous supporters.

So what is it that makes a leader a leader? This book will reveal that secret.

To my wife, my children, and my grandchildren.

I hope I was the kind of leader you needed.

To the mass of humanity born and yet to come who desire to rise above the confines of mediocrity and be the best they can be … to fulfill the measure of their creation.

All nations seek it constantly, because it is the key to greatness, sometimes to survival … the electric and the elusive quality known as leadership. Where does juvenile delinquency begin? In leaderless families. Where do slums fester? In leaderless cities. Which armies falter, which political parties fail? Poorly led ones. Contrary to the old saying that leaders are born not made, the art of leading can be taught, and it can be mastered.

    —General Mark W. Clark

Never in the history of the world has there been a more profound need for leaders of principle to step forward.

    —Gordon B. Hinckley

    MY STORY

For over forty years, I’ve studied how to be a better person. When my friends and family read novels, I would read how to improve myself. Much of my reading focused on how to increase my leadership skills.

A few years ago, I had a paradigm shift in my thinking concerning leadership. I realized that the books on this subject that I had been reading for decades seemed to be missing the point of what makes a great leader. They were identifying traits and qualities of recognized leaders and then proclaiming that those were what make up leadership. As Max DePree, the CEO of Herman Miller, Inc., writes in his book Leadership Is an Art, Leaders are portrayed, variously, as charismatic personalities, showmen, cheerleaders, con artists, visionaries, autocrats, and circus stunt men. Of course, what works for one person may not work for another. A person with a strong personality like Lee Iacocca of GM fame will employ techniques that are totally ineffective for a person with a soft personality like S. Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A. Yet people with both personality types can be great leaders despite their differences, as evidenced by these two great men. By trying to emulate one or the other, students of leadership often hide or bury the very thing that would make them a great leader: their own inherent values and beliefs.

At about this same time, I received an epiphany about what makes great leadership. As I pondered and examined this insight, I realized that I was viewing a whole new measure of what comprises leadership. New ideas flowed into my mind, and I soon realized that what was before me would revolutionize how we measure leaders. It was a sobering insight. Eloquent and brilliant men and women much smarter than I had studied the subject of leadership and formed their own theories. Who was I to challenge their accepted conclusions?

Yet as I tested and retested the formula for true leadership, I found that the principles contained in my thinking, and now in this book, were rock-solid and grounded on time-tested values. Those who develop the greatest 6 Cs of Leadership will be the leaders with the greatest impact.

Let me give a personal example. I was visiting with my good friend Dave Reed, who owns an insurance agency in Florida. Dave is an active Christian businessman. I asked him one day, Dave, do you think Jesus is a perfect leader?

He stated that he thought Jesus was, indeed, a perfect leader.

I then asked him, If Jesus came down and offered to be an active senior partner in your business, would you turn your company over to Him?

Dave answered immediately in the affirmative.

I then said, Dave, to the best of my knowledge, Jesus never made an insurance presentation, never calculated a needs analysis, sold a policy, or made a payroll. But I have done all of those things. As you can see, I have more experience and skills in insurance sales than Jesus. Would you turn your business over to me?

Dave’s answer to me was a resounding no, as fast as he had said yes to Jesus.

The point here is that skills and experience, as valuable as they are, are not what makes a person a leader. In this example, Jesus, who has no skills or experience in the insurance business, would nonetheless still be a perfect leader, even a Million-Point Leader. Why? Because of the values He embodies.

And that is what we will explore in this book—not specific leadership techniques, but values and beliefs
