    Introduction and Acknowledgements

He is around seventeen years old. He stands there in the bow of the ship as it rises and falls with the rhythm of the sea. Looking out over the horizon he can see the haze that is the promise of a new land. Occasionally he believes he catches a glimpse of a mountain top through the haze and thankfulness fills his soul.

This might be the story of a young man or woman today looking forward to a graduation ceremony and the promises that their future life holds for them. But it is not; it is rather the final chapter in the life of a young person on board the Mayflower as she completes her part in the journey to fulfill a destiny, the date is November 6, 1620.This is a love story called AMERICAN.

His journey has been harsh and during the voyage he has been overcome with a fever. Hesitantly he glances once more toward the promise and then feebly makes his way below deck to return to the cot where he has been confined for over a week. Laying there his breath becomes slow and shallow and in a final exhalation it ceases.

There is one man at the helm of the ship, one man on the mast, one infant in the arms of her mother and ninety nine men, women and children on their knees somberly acknowledging their absolute reliance on their Creator for the hope that is calling them.

His name is William Button, not significant is the archives of heroism, but undeniably etched in the book of eternity. He is a part of a love story that is American.

Upon arriving there my thoughts were primarily on the completion of this manuscript and not particularly on the event that was taking place. As I sat down in the auditorium my mind quickly lost interest in its work and became focused on the music of the piano on the stage. I felt the brilliance of the pianist as the notes filled the auditorium, and my mind, with peace. As the ceremony progressed I watched these young men and women bring honor and respect
