all those who love to read. To my granddaughters, Jordan and Macie, and to all the dear children whom I have tutored over the last eleven years.
Acknowledgements
It takes a lot of work to create a book, often a year or longer. First, the author has to write it, and then an editor has to make it readable. An illustrator has to make it fun with great pictures, and finally it goes to the publisher for printing.
I am so fortunate to have all of these areas covered. Barbara Sweeney has done a wonderful job over the last few years editing all my books. Darlene Thomas is so very talented, and I am so lucky to have her illustrate a second book for me. I hope she will continue with my next books.
Then, of course, there are the wonderful kids at the Century Elementary School who tell me how much they love my books. How lucky I am to have my family and friends who always encourage me to keep going.
Introduction
This is the story about Jenny and Lesley who are the best of friends. They both love their dogs, Corky and Duke, very much. Corky’s bravery teaches them many lessons on how to help other people. The girls also learn to share, and how to try and love everyone, even though it isn’t always so easy to do. They find that true friendship can become even stronger when you do help others.
So, this is the story of Jenny and Lesley growing up. I believe kids who read this book will learn to love these girls for trying to be their best.
chapter one
The Teacher’s Announcement
The Greenville’s lived in Ardmore, Oklahoma. They had one daughter whose name was Jenny. She was almost ten years old now.
Since she was three, Jenny had always wanted a dog. Lucy, the girl next door who was eleven, had a beautiful Collie named Rex. She was always so nice to let Jenny play with her dog.
Jenny’s best friend was Lesley. She lived next door to her on the other side. She got a dog when she was only five. Her dog was a German Shepherd. She named him Duke. So, Jenny did get to play with both Duke and Rex. Jenny would be soon turning ten years old, and she wanted her very own dog, now!
One morning when Jenny was in school her teacher, Miss Bradford, made an announcement to her class.
Chapter%201.jpgI’ll take it!
Class,
she began, my dear Aunt Mary has just passed away. She owned a dog that was about a year old. It’s a Border Collie. It was her wish that I find a new home for her dog. My aunt was a veterinarian, and had a clinic right here in town. Some of you may have taken your dog or cat to her clinic. She loved all the different kinds of animals that were brought into her clinic.
Jenny quickly stood up first, and raising her hand said, I’ll take it, Miss Bradford!
Fine, Jenny. See me right after school, and we will discuss it further.
After school was finished, Jenny rushed over to Miss Bradford’s classroom.
Well, Jenny, thank you for volunteering. Do you think your mother and father will let you have this dog?
I’m sure they will, Miss Bradford! I’ve wanted a dog since I was three years old. I’ll get permission, and I’ll let you know tomorrow, okay?
Just then, two of Jenny’s classmates came into the room.
Miss Bradford, we also want your dog. Diane wants first choice, and then I would like second choice,
cried Anna Bell.
Well, Anna Bell, Jenny did ask first. If her parents won’t let her have the dog, then Diane and I will talk about it further.
Jenny then asked, What’s the dog’s name, Miss Bradford?
Corky! Isn’t that a cute name, girls? She’s very playful, and will need a lot of love. I know whoever gets Corky will love her. I would keep her myself, but I have a cat that is very jealous of any other pets being in my house.
What’s your cat’s name, Miss Bradford?
asked Diane.
Queen,
Miss Bradford answered them. Well, girls, I’ll see you all tomorrow.
As soon as Jenny came home she began yelling, Mom, Mom, I’m home.
There was no answer.
Mom, where are you? I’m home.
Still no one answered.
Jenny then wandered out to their backyard.
There you are! Didn’t you hear me calling you, Mother?
Jenny cried.
No, Jenny, I didn’t. I was singing, and I didn’t hear you, dear. I’m sorry. How was your day at school?
Fine, Mother. I have a very important question to ask you. Before you answer, I want you to think about your answer.
Ask away, Jenny.
Well, this morning my teacher, Miss Bradford, made an announcement to our class. She said that her aunt had died, and that she had a dog that was about a year old. Her aunt asked her, my teacher, Miss Bradford, to find one of her students who would take her dog. Mother, I said that I would! You know I’ve always wanted a dog, and I have asked you many times for one. You’ve always told me that I needed to be a little older first. Mother, I’m almost ten years old. I think you’ve denied me a dog long enough. Please talk to dad. I need to know today, so I can give my answer to Miss Bradford in the morning. It’s almost summer, and this is a perfect time to get a dog!
pleaded Jenny.
What’s this dog’s name, Jenny?
His name is Corky. Isn’t that a neat name, Mother?
Yes, it is, dear. Your father and I have been discussing this. I believe it was just two days ago, and we did decide that your having a dog was a good idea. Yes, Jenny, you may have Corky.
Jenny rushed into her mother’s arms, saying, Thank you, thank you, I didn’t think it was going to be this easy getting your permission! I’m going next door to tell Lesley, Mother.
By the way, Jenny, before you leave, I forgot to ask you something. What kind of a dog is Corky?
He’s a Border Collie, Mother, so he’s not a really big dog.
When Jenny came running out her front door, she saw Lesley just coming up the block with her dog.
Lesley, Lesley,
Jenny called out, my mother said I could have Corky! Can you believe it? I’m going to have my very own dog!
I’m so glad you got him, Jenny, and that Diane didn’t. I sure don’t like that Diane or that Anna Bell very much,
replied Lesley.
Now we can take our dogs for a walk every day after school, and maybe to the park to play ball with them!
cried Jenny.
The next morning at school, Jenny rushed up to Miss Bradford’s desk, and exclaimed, I can have Corky! When can I get him?
she asked her teacher.
This evening would be good, Jenny. You must bring your parents with you though. Have them come to this address at eight, okay?
She then handed Jenny a note with her address and phone number on it. I’m so glad that you’re taking Corky, Jenny!
Diane and Anna Bell were just arriving and also went up to Miss Bradford’s desk, asking about Corky. After finding out that Jenny’s parents had said yes, they headed to their seats not looking very happy. They didn’t even look toward Jenny as they took their seats.
When the lunch bell rang, both Diane and Anna Bell approached Jenny, We were hoping your parents would have said no.
They then just walked away.
Lesley then came up to Jenny, Those girls are not very nice, Jenny. Again, I’m so very glad that they didn’t get Corky. When are you going to get your new dog?
Tonight, at eight, and then I’ll have Corky for my very own!
cried Jenny.
Can I come with you to get him?
pleaded Lesley.
I think that would be great, but you’ll have to leave Duke at home,
laughed Jenny.
I think he likes me.
chapter two
Jenny’s New Pet
It was 7:45 p.m. and Jenny heard their doorbell ring. It’s just Lesley, Mother. I’ll get it.
Hi, Jenny! I bet you’re really excited, aren’t you?
exclaimed Lesley.
Yes, you could say that for sure!
Then Jenny hollered, Mother, Father, it’s ten to eight! We need to go.
We’re coming, dear. Your father just went out the backdoor. He’s bringing the car around right now. Please settle down, Jenny. Oh, hi, Lesley! We’re glad you could come too, dear,
commented Jenny’s mother.
They finally left, and arrived at Miss Bradford’s house. Jenny and Lesley quickly jumped out of the car, and ran up to her house.
Jenny, don’t ring the bell until we can all get there!
cried her father.
Too late, Jenny had already rung the bell.
Miss Bradford opened the door. Well, Jenny, you’re right on time. Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Greenville, please come in. Hi, to you too, Lesley. It’s nice that you could accompany Jenny tonight.
Where’s Corky, Miss Bradford?
cried Jenny.
