Delores J. Howard

My name is Delores J. Howard. I live in Franklin, Ohio, where I went to high school. This is also where I met my husband, Hugh. We were high-school sweethearts and married shortly after graduation. When Hugh and I were in our twenties, we became Christians. In time, two different ministers advised him to go to the school of preaching in Lubbock, Texas. We did just that! We had our two young sons in tow, and off we went to an unknown land and future. While there, God blessed us with a beautiful baby girl. We stayed an extra six months for stateside missionary training, and once completed, we moved to a very small church in Salyersville, Kentucky, to begin our ministry. Weve lived in Kentucky, Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio. Family issues took us out of the ministry, but it did not hamper our love or devotion to our Lord. God gave me the gift of poetry and I honor HIM with it. I have Bible verses under each title to support the integrity of every poem. The poems are suitable for use in a variety of situations and/or ministries. God is honored and praised in every poem in some way. He is worthy. He is loved.

    GOD’S HOLY WORD

    PSALM 45:1 My heart is overflowing with a good theme;

    I recite my composition concerning the King;

My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

    DEDICATION

    (Ps. 119:162; Matt. 6:19-24, 13:44-46; Mk. 12:28-31;

    Lk. 12:15-21; I Cor. 2:9 & Eph. 2:1-13)

We see that gold and silver

    Are more valuable than ever.

Men and women strive for them

    In every worldly endeavor.

    God’s children all have something

    That’s more valuable than gold.

    Within God’s Holy Scriptures

The prize and whereabouts are told.

    Until we get the treasure-trove

    In its utmost measure,

God’s given us some precious pearls

To reflect on and to treasure.

We shall wear our strands of pearls

    To honor our God above.

Also, we shall give to Him,

Our souls, strength, minds, and love.

    Until my life is over

    And my spirit has fruition,

I’ll laud my Lord and Father

    With a heart-felt dedication.

    A DEMON NAMED FEAR

    (Ps. 3; Prov. 21:31, 28:1, 29:25; Matt. 10:24-28;

    2 Tim. 1:7-10; Heb. 4:11-16; 1 Jn. 4:10-19 & Rev. 21:1-8)

    A demon makes you afraid.

    His poisonous name is Fear.

He plans to ruin your future

    If he dominates you, dear.

He’ll freeze your soul and progress.

He’ll plague your heart and mind.

He’ll rob you of your living

And the joys that you could find.

    Wherever you are weak

    That’s where Fear will invade.

So, you must tell your Father

    What makes you so afraid.

    With God you can defeat

    This uninvited guest.

    Trusting in God’s power

Can give you peace and rest.

    He’ll shatter Fear’s bravado

Until he is weak and small.

    Though Fear wears many faces,

    Our Father knows them ALL!

    Pick up your Gospel sword.

Now see what God can do.

    When your courage springs anew,

Fear will run away from you!

    —Delores J. Howard

    A GIANT!

    (1 Sam. 17)

    Goliath was a giant,

    A nine foot avid foe.

    David would confront him,

For no one else would go.

    The giant had a javelin,

    A spear, and awesome sword.

    David still would challenge him

In the name of his awesome Lord.

David took out one smooth stone

And placed it in his sling.

Then he flung that stone between

    The eyes of the Philistine.

What’s the lesson we can learn

    That’s given in this tale?

    When facing a giant problem,

    We’ve learned how to prevail.

Love the Lord with all your heart,

    Obey Him, and be wise.

Then, He’ll help you win your battles

    Whenever they arise.

With God you are a warrior,

And no problem is too tall.

With God you are a conqueror,

And you’ll see your giant fall.

    —Delores J. Howard

    A HEART OF FIRE

    (Ps. 40; Matt. 28:18-20; 1 Cor. 9:24-27;

    Heb. 1:5-14, 12:1-3 & Rev. 3:15-22)

I once had a heart of fire,

    I was active and alive.

    Yet, somewhere along the way

    My spirit took a dive.

    My heart became exhausted

    As demons played their games.

    My embers grew lukewarm

    When Satan doused my flames.

    I grew sad and sickly.

    I grew weak and frail.

I tried to stand for Jesus,

But time and again I’d fail.

    Christ fueled my dying embers

    Before they grew stone-cold.

    Now, I proclaim my Savior

With a spirit hot and bold.

Christ said He’d never leave me,

    For Satan’s threat is dire.

Should I wane, Christ has the light,

To restore a heart of fire.

    —Delores J. Howard

    A HERO SANDWICH

    (Ex. 13:21-22; Ps. 16:7-8, 121:7-8, 139:1-6; Is. 52:12;

    Matt. 6:9-13; Acts. 7:44-46; 1 Cor. 2:7 & Col. 1:13-17)

My God is ever before me,

    I follow wherever He goes.

Should I ever lose sight of Him,

It’s because my eyes are closed.

He clears the thickets before me,

    Life’s thorns can really bite.

God’s my guiding cloud by day

And a pillar of fire at night.

    Christ Jesus has my back,

I have no need to fear.

He takes the blows that I don’t see

    And protects my revealed rear.

God’s eyes are ever before me,

    My Savior is there behind.

I’m sandwiched in Their hallowed care

As the path of life we wind.
