About this ebook

This is my biography. I was a single, divorced parent, and after years of abuse which led to alcoholism, and going through a rape, I sunk into the deepest depths of society. On a misty November night, while riding on Highway 202 in a New England town, I was rear-ended by a Mack truck, flung thirty feet in the air, and landed on cement. With no life left in me, I had a near-death experience that changed my life forever. I believe, and it is my prayer, that anyone who has been through any kind of trauma, rape, abuse, or addiction of any kind will read this and find new hope in their lives. Through my relationship with Jesus Christ, I have a new lease on life that gives me security, wisdom, peace, joy, and the unconditional love of God my Father. Every day, my strength is renewed in Him, and no matter what storms may come my way, He has taught me how to overcome.

    DEDICATION

I would like to first dedicate this book to my daddy, my papa, my best friend, the lover of my soul, the one who will never leave or forsake me, and the creator of the universe, God our Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ. I would also like to thank the Holy Spirit, who has been my counselor, teacher, and guide, giving me the strength and courage to put my heart on my sleeve in order to write this book.

I would also like to dedicate this book to my husband, my mom, my dad, my daughter, my grandchildren, and all of my family that I love very much!

    FIRST FOREWORD

To watch a beauty for ashes in progress is undiscernible to the naked eye. Learning and following the hope of fulfilled dreams and goals becomes a sparkling reality.

The story in this book, I can attest, is true. I watched the transformation of a bottomed-out alcoholic, sponsoring her through the tears and the stretching of the cocoon to the fluttering of the newborn wings of faith through grace. From my perspective, I will share.

I heard the story from Sarah at a low point in her early sobriety while taking the proverbial grain of salt. Soon afterwards, in a Bible study group, I listened to a woman mention how she and her husband came upon the scene of a serious accident a couple years before. They had laid hands on this lifeless woman’s body and prayed until the ambulance arrived. The hair raised on the back of my neck as I realized this woman’s story matched—detail for detail—my new friend’s story. They could not have known we would meet.

Experiencing this first has opened my eyes to coming to terms with this blessed gift. The joy from my friend’s experience has permeated my life through the love of Jesus Christ. Because of her testimony, I came to the Lord. Watching truth of an otherwise unbelievable story became plausible in my life. I came, I came to, I came to believe. Anything is possible if a person believes (Mark 9:23). I now believe.

    SECOND FOREWORD

It is rare that we can have a true experience seen as to the awesome nature and power of our Lord. It thrills me to read this book, as it shares the truth of our miraculous, loving, omnipresent God. Sarah had two paths she could have traveled down—one with grief and pain, lost in a world of drugs and alcohol, or she could choose the path less traveled, God.

There are those who think God is the easier path, but as you will find, that is not necessarily the truth, for first God must help us see our frailty and then help us overcome that frailty. Sarah brings us through her step-by-step process, so often thinking she has reached her destination, only to find she is only in the beginning of yet a new overcoming.

Watching Sarah maturing into a woman of God and becoming ever more dependent upon the strength of God with each new overcoming was to me the very thrill of the book. It was like riding a roller coaster, the thrill of the climb upward to the mountain top mixed with the anticipation of the descent back to the valley. Each time she was led back to the valley, she was brought to a new measure of her growth to maturity.

Listen and see, if you will, To those who can hear, let them hear, for in this book is spoken the truth of who we are and where we can be if we choose the path less traveled by. Though it looks oh so hard in the beginning, the joy received at the end is the prize we all seek.

With prayer, I hope that all who read this book are led to a new place in the Lord, as Sarah has portrayed, for God is standing at the door, waiting for the knock.

Thank you, Sarah, for standing naked for all to see who we are and that God loves us regardless.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I would like to acknowledge all the wonderful people who helped me with my first book:

To my awesome husband, Mike, who has put up with the long hours of me writing and rewriting this book, waiting patiently the whole time, while being kind, loving, and supportive—you showed me what true love is between a man and woman. I will always love you, and I am blessed with the love you give back to me.

I would like to also acknowledge my mom and dad; my daughter, my brother, my sister, my Meme, Aunty Noreen, and the rest of my family.

To my best friend, Naomi, for taking time to edit my book in the beginning and for the years and time we have spent together through my recovery—thank you for bringing me into my Holy Spirit–filled life, never asking anything in return. God has blessed me with an inspirational woman of God, and that’s you. We will be bound by God’s love forever!

To Kathy, for taking precious time during the holidays to edit and help convey the message clearly while looking in from the outside—you are a beautiful, prophetic woman of God whom I love dearly, and I am very blessed to have you in my life.

I would like to thank all the people who took part in my walk with God, who molded me into the woman of God that I am today: the teachers, pastors, and prophets whom God has put in my life to enlighten me, teach me, and keep me on the right path toward the prize.

    CHAPTER 1

    Innocence Lost

Thanksgiving Day was a bittersweet moment in time. It is a day to give thanks and praise to God for the things we share together, a day set aside with the festive mood of food, family, and friends. On this day, November 22, 1962, there came the most inconvenient birth for some on such a day as this. My mother had a son, a daughter, and then seven years later, she gave birth to an unplanned child. This child was me.

All over the country, while the aroma of turkey fills their homes, families wait patiently to take the first bite of the carefully prepared dinner. As Dr. Cohen was just about to sit down with his family for this Thanksgiving feast, he could almost taste the apple pie freshly baked for dessert. He received the call to come to the hospital to deliver me. Dr. Cohen was a family friend and delivered all three of us children.

At 5:15 p.m., I was born. It was the last place anyone would like to be on this day. As I grew up, my mom would kid around, saying, I had my son, my daughter, and seven years later—oops, there came Sarah. She would say this every now and again, but I know now that God doesn’t make mistakes. I am a precious gift to Him.

My father was a generous, kind, funny, and loving man. He had to quit junior high school to work with his father and uncle to build the family business. He would work sixty to eighty hours a week so we could live comfortably and provided for all our needs. He came home dirty and tired from doing auto mechanic work.

We lived in an upscale neighborhood with ranch, brick, and Tudor style homes. You couldn’t find a yard that wasn’t perfectly landscaped
