You may be asking yourself right now: What exactly is a miracle, and can one truly exist or happen? Is a miracle simply something unexpected, improbable, or statistically unlikely? Is it something sacred, divine, or supernatural? Does it transcend the laws of nature, or is it only an amazing biological or phenomenal expression of the laws of nature? Is it only something wonderful, fortuitous, and beneficial, or could a miracle be that unexplained event that simply beats the odds and appears coincidental to those who remain unaware of the great, inspiring laws of the universe?

You will have to draw your own conclusions to these mystery questions as you peruse the potentially life-changing pages that follow. To me, the very existence of life itself could be considered a miracle. In our vast universe of quantum and astronomical events, could not our very existence and human experience be worthy of such terminology? Is it not miraculous that the simplest cells emerged 3.9 billion years ago and not even the greatest Nobel Prize—winning minds on earth have collectively figured out how? Is not the very diversity of life that has filled every conceivable niche on earth an expression of the truly miraculous?

As Rabbi Avigdor Miller once put it, All of nature and of science stems from the knowledge that the world was made by a super intelligence. Every object in nature is of endless wisdom; no matter how deeply you’ll fathom the profundity of a natural object, you’ll never be finished with the miracles of plan and purpose that unfold before your eyes. The deeper you delve into it, the more you see how little you know. Everything is so planned, so perfectly set out to serve a purpose, and the purpose is served with the minimum of expenditure of effort. There are millions upon millions of examples of God’s wisdom in the world, and each one is a miracle in itself.

Are we not immersed in daily wonders which are often too pure and intricate to fully behold? Are we not unconscious witnesses of moment-to-moment miracles within our amazing and intricate bodies—within our immune reactions, cell divisions, and genetic reproductions—though they often lie hidden from our outer perceptions? Aren’t our very daily synchronous occurrences amazing expressions of the miraculous? If we explored our lives more deeply, couldn’t we become awestruck by the magnificent timing of the many complementary opposites that occur in the simplest and most profound aspects of our daily lives?

Could unexplained healing miracles be expressions of some immutable and immortal laws applied to our mortal bodies? Could these extraordinary and astonishing happenings be attributed to the presence and action of an ultimate or divine organizing power—or possibly a divinely intelligent matrix of mathematical beauty, elegance, and order?

Could the many extraordinary and concurrent events in our daily lives initiate within us a cause for wonder or a pause for astonishment, though they could also be considered inexplicable by normal standards? Since that which is normal and usual is considered natural, could unexplainable miracles be considered supernatural or at least epi-natural events? Does the significance of a miraculous event point to the presence or activity of a greater organizing, intelligent, or divine power? Could a miracle also be called a sign" and signify something essential or noumenal beyond the existence of the phenomenal?

As the philosopher Immanuel Kant explained, the phenomenal (when it means perceptible to our senses) world may be an expression of power, and the source from which this power comes could only be the noumenal world beyond. Could energy or spirit without matter be expressionless and matter without spirit be motionless?

Could extraordinary, astonishing, or miraculous occurrences be considered religious phenomena when they express a religious reality, however that is defined? Are not beliefs in miraculous happenings features of most religions? And is not the incidence of miracles universal—though their functions, nature, purpose, and explanations vary according to the social, cultural, theological, and philosophical context in which they appear? However inexplicable they are, don’t all miracles have an explanation in the sense that they are accounted for in terms of the religious and cultural system that supports them and that they are meant to support. Without such an accompanying (explicit or implicit) reason or theory—like the presence, activity, and intervention of divine intelligence or powers—there would be no miracles in the aforementioned sense but only lifeless and unexplained phenomena.

Now that you have had a brief introduction to miracles and a series of intriguing questions put forth, is it possible that by simply exploring your daily life through the eyes governed by the wisdom of your balanced mind and heart you could reveal and experience many such miraculous events? Could these potentially humble and inspire you if you fully attended to them? In the pages that follow, there are many anecdotes and inspiring principles that will explore the occurrences of a life filled with daily miracles—those that might already be happening in your life and those you can become inspired by and grateful for.

When you listen to the wisdom of your heart and become guided by the inspirations of your balanced mind or soul, you will attune to these daily occurrences—these inexplicable events that can inspire awe and reverence for the magnificence of your surrounding environment and amazing life. This book is for you to gratefully open your heart so that the miraculous events that surround and permeate your very existence can be felt and known and be used to guide your life to one of true mastery.

Read Miracles or Coincidences with an open mind, and let it open your heart. You will begin to appreciate your daily life, your true magnificence, and your new possibilities for living more fully. You are destined to live an amazing and extraordinary life. With the spirit of the miraculous under your wings, you will be able to soar to new heights and see even greater horizons. May your journey into the miraculous in your daily living open your life up to the ever-present opportunities that lead you to fulfillment and grace! Your soul is whispering, your heart is pumping, and your higher mind and inner eyes are waiting. Is it not now the time to embrace the miraculous?

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

In the writing of a book, there are many people who contribute to the final product. They may help through their enthusiasm, through their suggestions, through their interest, or through the hands-on role they have in its production. Now that I am at the point of acknowledging people who have helped, I see there is literally a cast of thousands. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this book.

To Geoff and Bella, thank you for your understanding.

To my family—who have at times wondered—thank you for your patience and acceptance.

Of the people who have had the physical responsibility of getting the book published, I first want to thank Deb, who was my master coach and mentor. She showed me what courage means and how to keep going, step forward, and never give up. She also demonstrates what it is to be a great person. Thank you, Deb.

Thanks to the team in Australia who helped with the original edition of the book and to the dedicated team at Balboa.

To Debz, for her patience and guidance in mentoring me to believe in myself; and for the gift of her presence.

To the people who shared the pages with me and who gave of themselves through their stories, I say: I am truly humbled and blessed to have had the opportunity to speak with you and to learn more about the amazing journeys that we share. To Paul, for being a wonderful mentor and someone who exudes love for his fellow man; to Pat, for being a constant reminder of what forgiveness can bring into your life; to Paul, for showing the courage to keep going in adversity; I will miss hearing your voice. Thank you, Vince and Marie, for sharing your stories and being inspirational. To Tracy, for miraculously showing up at The Angel of the North and sharing her amazing life story; to Michael, for sharing his memories of a remarkable experience and for going on to help others on their journeys with serious illness. To Peter, for sharing his thoughts; and to Pam, for being dogged in her determination to assist others. And lastly, but by no means least, to Kerrianne, for providing a truly moving and wondrous insight into my country, Australia, its ancestors, and our future—that is awesome.

    INTRODUCTION

There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.

    —Albert Einstein

People have asked me why I am qualified to write a book on miracles. My response is always the same. I am nobody special. I am as qualified as you are to write one. Why? Like you, I am a miracle. If we stop to think just briefly about how we are conceived, born, and continue to breathe and wake up each morning to see the new day form, isn’t that pretty amazing? I am an ordinary human being who sees extraordinary things happen in my world and others’, and I try to put a name on those things. I am no different from the others who have gone before and written about their experiences and their contemporaries’. Ultimately, I have a desire to share some thoughts with others—and it’s just possible that those others may benefit from the words that they read.

Why miracles? We live in a truly miraculous world. Awesome things happen, and we struggle to find reasons and give explanations. I have been fascinated by unexplained occurrences for much of my life. I am only beginning to see how they may come about, although their mystery is perhaps their greatest appeal. Why would I write a book about miracles today? Many people believe that miracles only happen when saints intervene and that this has no relevance in today’s world. Today’s world is very removed from the traditional religion that my generation grew up with. We search for answers outside the walls of a church.

In modern times, we still strive to believe in miracles and in something greater than ourselves. We want to have this reinforced by some sort of an authority; this seems to allow people to believe. It somehow legitimates our knowledge for us.

I believe we all have that ability—to dream, to achieve our goals and aspirations, to live with our light shining for others, no matter what we do. Throughout time, different religions, thinkers, and groups have tried to unravel the mystery of our existence on earth and our connection to God. There—I said God. The Gnostics really believe that we each have a divine spark and that it is just waiting for us to ignite it and connect to our divine nature. The alchemists believed that we could change base metals into gold. I see this as a metaphor for us to change our base nature into the gold of our true selves. It is through this process that we begin to bring miracles into our lives and those around us. For yes, we are all connected, and it is almost as if we are joining the dots as we each form part of one another’s stories. Some of the players in the stories will change, and some will stay the same. Some of us will have cameos, and others will be the leads for a while. We each contribute to the greater whole, regardless of our beliefs, ideals, or sometimes even our willingness. So, what about the miracles?

Part of our journey of discovering our true nature involves miracles. In finding ourselves, we also find the slipstream that truly leads to remarkable events and occurrences for us. I keep using the word miracle, but what does that really mean? Most days, headlines in the papers refer to a miracle comeback, a miracle goal, a miracle career—especially in the sports sections. The Concise Macquarie Dictionary (1982) defines a miracle as an effect in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is therefore ascribed to a supernatural agency. The word derives from the Latin miraculo or object of wonder.

So what do I mean when I say we can get to a miracle in seven steps and that there are ways that we can begin to see them every day around us? I mean that we can invoke them in our lives, and hopefully this will lead to a better world for us all. It only takes a few people to make a change, and yet that change can be far-reaching. Many brilliant people have been telling us about such things over the centuries. Saints have been attributed with miracles in their own lives and, later, often after their deaths, in the lives of others. Holy men—from Christ to Muhammad to Buddha and modern masters like Sai Baba—bring about huge changes for people.

The meaning for us today is also being carried by great speakers, thinkers, and authors. Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Dr. John Demartini, and Louise Hay are all making contributions on the world stage. Great Australians like Paul and Mary Blackburn and their team at Beyond Success, and Pat Mesiti and his team at Millionaire Mindset are really distilling a way for people to bring that magic into their lives. They, together with Dr. John Demartini, have led me to write a book that I have long dreamed about but never really had the connections or understanding to write. They share their knowledge and wisdom to help countless people, and I am not different. I just happened to want to write a book that would spread that wisdom and offer practical ways for people to change their lives.

Since starting this book, I have found many people have gone out of their way to help and encourage me. Not the least are Andrew and Daryl Grant, who show what two ordinary Aussies can achieve in starting and building an Internet empire. They continue to encourage others to build their dreams and reach for the stars. Thanks also to Darren Stephens; his wife, Jackie; and his assistant, Jo Munro—who give of their time and their knowledge with ease and generosity of spirit. I have also found along the way that people just seem to go out of their way to help me, and you will find a long list of thank-yous at the front of the book, with good reason. Without the assistance and kindness of the people who touch my life, I would not have gotten this far. Their faith and belief in me propels me forward, and I hope I can do the same for others. Special thanks to Dr. John Demartini for being willing to read my manuscript and write a beautiful foreword to this book—I am blessed.

We can all be inspired by the great politicians, sports people, actors, volunteers, and the mums and dads living in our streets who achieve their goals and yet are compelled to do more. They help others live lives that are just a little bigger, a little brighter, and a little more whole. So strap yourself in and—no matter what your faith or your thoughts on religion, God, or creation—have a read and maybe, just maybe, add one or two things to what you are already doing. Keep your mind and heart open, and see what happens. Miracles really do happen!
