    Carmen & Melody’s Beginning

That is the last of everything ma’am yelled one of the movers as he place the last box named personal belongings on the floor in the living room area of the brand newly build home. As I yelled thank you, from the other side of this large house quickly running around to the front door to catch them before leaving, I waved the 4 moving men off. Firmly closes the front door, I leaned backwards against the door as I slid down to the floor. As I place my hands tightly around my legs and drop down my head in my lap mumbling, I said I would never return here, but a new start of a new beginning. Feeling my body temperature rising and tears about to roll down my face. A loud abrupt noise made me pull myself back together and as I raise my weeping head.

It was only my 7 year old son Tristan running down the stairs, shouting, I love my new room and I really love this house mom

As I used all my might to crack a smile, saying in return I’m glad as Tristan, finally reached all the way down stairs he said Mom what’s wrong replying nothing baby, why? he said you look very sad, no worries, I am just overwhelmed with joy as they hugged for a short moment.

You heard that, yelled, Tristan what? I hear kids outside Tristan continued on. Can I please go outside? Can I, oh can I, oh can I?

As long as you stay right in the yard where I can keep an eye on you at all times.

As Tristan jumped up with joy with the look of, a home at last he ran quickly out the door and slammed it behind him. As I stood up and looked around at all the boxes covering the newly decorated house, with all the fancy trimming that came along with it as well. All I could notice for some reason was the box labeled personal belongings. (Walking over slowly to the box as if she was afraid to open it to see what lay inside. She reached to the panel over the fireplace and got the box cuter to open the box. As she placed the blade on the box, she let out a deep breath) and said I told myself I was gonna destroy this box when I got here , but then she remember she haven’t open this box for some time and didn’t even knew what was inside from possibly 7 years ago, as she wondered.

As she began to peel the box open she just closed her eyes and took another deep breath and wondered what was inside the box she dreaded ever seeing again. The box now was finally opened completely that she could now see all the way inside. The first thing she saw was a little jewelry box she had from when she was just a little girl, it made her smile because it was the first thing she can remember giving to her before her father died. As she picked it up, she removed the plastic wrapping covering it. It was packaged as if it was brand—new, minus the red stain on the left side of the box she opened it and smelled the inside and at that point she could have sworn she smelled the scent of her father’s cologne. As she listened to the soft melody that came from the jewelry box, she closed her eyes as she reminisced on many mishaps of her childhood.

She could hear the loud sound of a doors slamming shut and people yelling all through the house one Sunday hot afternoon, it was August 7th of 1978 but the yelling was not like any other day. The girls (Melody at the time was 12 yrs. old and Carmen was 10 yrs. old) could tell something bad was about to happen.

As Carmen and her older sister Melody hid as they was told by Carmen’s dad (Stanley) in the attic which was right over the hallway of the upper part of their house they lived in most of their childhood. Both girls frighten and not knowing what to expect being alone in the old scary attic, Carmen pulls out her jewelry box, which was giving to her the day before by her father. As Carmen open the jewelry box it lets off the most beautiful sound both girls ever heard. As the sound from the jewelry box suddenly made both girls stop crying. Carmen said in a crackly crying voice, my dad said whenever I am scared and feel alone, to always open up my jewelry box and think of him and everything will be ok.

Melody who was the oldest of the two said, as she was still crying, that silly fool box isn’t going to get us outta here or this mess Carmen

Than we gotta pray like big mama always used to do remember

Melody said angrily Big mama? Big mama believe in god even if there is no reason to, everybody seem to believe in god, she said in a lowered voice. If there is a god than why is we poor, huh? If there is a god than why is we always getting beat on and momma says nothing to him, huh? If there is a god than why your daddy white and my daddy black, huh? Why Carmen, why??? I told you there is no god because if there was a god we both wouldn’t be in the attic bleeding right now.

Carmen said sacredly, bleeding? I am not bleeding

    Well I am said Melody

    Where melody where

Shh… Melody said as she pointed as she lifted up her dress and pointed to her panties that were full of blood.

Oh my goodness what happened melody, what happened? Please talk to me, Carmen begged.

Talk Melody said (sighs) talking isn’t gonna help us none.

As they both sat there holding each other tight as if they were frighten they would be taking away from one another. They made a pact, that whatever was done in this house than it stayed in this house as momma always told them. As momma Claudine always used to say, no need to have folks all up in your business and they can’t help none right? If you girls wanna get taken away from me or one another, I suggest y’all just keep quite ya hear? As Melody rocked me back and forth humming the tune from the jewelry box. We both became calm until we both heard the yelling come closer and closer, as we heard someone reaching for the latch to the attic door, we both backed up to the wall to we felt there was nowhere else to go. We both began to cry and call on momma, the steps came down and we heard loud footsteps coming right towards us. As I couldn’t bare to see what was going to happen next, I just closed my eyes and prayed to God That he take us away from this house, Chuck and momma.

I held my jewelry box so tight to my chest I thought it would break in half. I heard Melody let out a scream and I open my eyes to see her daddy Chuck, pulling on her saying Your mine and nobody gonna stop that as Melody fought chuck trying to get her arm away from him, he placed that bottle of gin back to his lips and said with a grin Carmen your next. He pushed Melody against the wall so hard where she fell back and hit her head on the end of big mama old antique Chester draw and I just saw her poor little skinny body drop as I stood over her emotionless. I felt Chuck grab me by my hair and said Oh now who we have here, pure, ol’red bone who think her shit don’t stink. We got to fix that now don’t we? Don’t worry, god told me too. As I tried to fight back and get away I look at my mother as she stood there, behind chuck and she had this look on her face like she wanted to help but didn’t know how. As I screamed for my daddy, Chuck said as he stood over me and sweat rolled down his face and dropped onto mine, it’s nothing your white daddy or anybody can do to help you now".

Right at that point I heard footsteps coming up the stairs and it was my daddy, but he looked hurt as if he was hit in the head with something because he had blood pouring down his head. As I screamed for him, Chuck tightens up his grip and said this one is mine. My father said looking at Chuck I don’t want to fight no more, just give me my little girl and we will leave here and you will never see us again I promise.

As Chuck laughed and placed the bottle of gin to his lips again he said No! What you think y’all better than all of us here, huh? Stanley begged and pleaded for Chuck to let me go and all I could remember was me looking at Melody laying helplessly on the floor bleeding and my daddy on his knees begging and pleading for my life and his. I said momma do something, do something now. As I watched my mother standing there crying doing nothing while this man hurt everyone I decided at that moment I had to do something. I looked down at my jewelry box, which I never put down, and held it in one hand and thought if I swung it with all my might, it could hit Chuck’s bottle as he lifted it back to his mouth.

As I swung the Jewelry box it broke Chuck’s bottle and glass shattered everywhere and in a reaction he let me go and my dad managed to get up, pick me up and tried to run down the stairs while Chuck was distracted. However, before we got to the stairs we heard a click of a gun in which Chuck had in his waistband of his pants the whole time. Pointing towards us, my daddy stopped in his tracks and put me down and placed me behind him, as he slowly turned around. He said, Chuck let us go please; you got the ones you said you wanted right? Chuck laughed so loud, I can still hear his laugh to this day, even as a grown women and how it made my whole body quiver.

(Loud laugher) I don’t have everything I want white man; I want your life for what you did to my family

    Wait a minute

Chuck yelled shut the hell up, you had a affair with my wife, and she kept your little bitch child that think she so much better than everyone else, and you want me to just let you go and do nothing? As he took another step towards us, I grabbed my daddy leg so tight scared of not knowing what would happen next. As chuck toke another step

Stanley said I would die before I let you abuse my child like you do yours. You should be ashamed Stanley continued. You are a man of Christ for god sake, what your congregation would think of this other life style you pose outside of church, if this gets out. What would god say to you on judgment day, think about what you’re doing? Chuck please spare me my child’s life, she has done nothing wrong. I apologies for what has happened but that is already done, but what we can change now is what happens from this point forward. As Stanley continued to pledge for his and his child life, Chuck just stood there emotionless, as he had no feeling for what was done already or said. Stanley stood there quietly for a moment to see if chuck processed what he said so far, and there was just silence. To me it seemed like an eternity but it was only a short while, Stanley
