A Dog Named Charlie Bob - Buddy Bumpus

    Preface

Coming from a family of broadcasters and writers, it is only natural that I carry on the tradition of sharing with the public, a tradition began by my father, Bill Jay Bumpus, who was a well known TV broadcaster, personality and journalist for the CBS affiliate, WLAC-TV, in Nashville, TN during the late 1950’s thru the 1970’s. Maybe I am destined for some type of notoriety, having been shown on television to the Nashville viewing audience on the day I was born way back in October of 1956. You see, Bill Jay had a 15-minute outdoors TV show that aired around 5:00 pm every Saturday. Somehow the camera crew was able to get the film of my arrival (or shortly thereafter at least) processed and on the air that evening on Dad’s show. Seems he was mighty proud of his new baby boy, quite a catch indeed. Most likely, notoriety is not a similar destiny for me as it was for my father, who was best known for the outdoors show (it aired for over 15 years) and his nightly anchoring of the Big News for Channel 5. Most surely though, my father’s wonderful vocabulary and his writing talents conveyed to me and my two older sisters, both who are writers within their careers.  I also believe my writing talents come from my mother, who at 87 can compose some wonderful emails and stories herself. I’m not sure all the above exactly qualifies me to be a writer, but I am not so sure one has to meet any specific qualifications either, other than the desire to share, via the written word. So I am sharing, through A Dog Named Charlie Bob, as many of the funny and warming experiences I can recall about someone who was quite a character, someone worthy of writing about. Someone who will always hold a special place within my heart, as he has taught me so much about life.

Living in Chattanooga, Tennessee on the side of Lookout Mountain with my soul mate and love of my life, Rexann, has given me a peaceful and somewhat casual observer status in life. As I approach the post-middle-age years my desire is to, as is for many, leave a legacy that is honorable and worthy of leaving. Writing certainly is a means to provide future generations a tangible connection to the life one has led. My life won’t go down as the most impressive one ever spent here on earth, but it will be one I hope deemed as a worthy one. The peace and serenity of living in the middle of a beautiful forest on the side of an impressive geographic feature such as Lookout Mountain helps me to maintain the most important aspect in life that I have learned: humility. For how can one not feel humbled in the presence of such a fine work of God’s creation? I am thankful and respectful of all the blessings I have, meager by some standards, yet magnificent by mine, as I am a very happy man! And after all, isn’t that what we all are striving for—happiness? I hope my book shares a little of that happiness and all the other good things that came from my years of knowing Charlie Bob Bumpus, a truly remarkable individual.

Finally, no one has loved Charlie Bob more than Rexann Bumpus. This book is dedicated to her and her love for him, and to the wonderful and so very special relationship and bond between them.

This is a story about a dog named Charlie Bob. A remarkable individual who came into my life about 15 years ago. This is his story as best as I can remember and communicate through the written word. I hope it does him justice. I hope he likes it.

Charlie Bob came to me early one Sunday morning in the middle of May 1995. I had experienced a most emotional morning involving the departure of my father who had driven over from Tennessee to visit with me for the weekend. As I was driving back to my two-bedroom duplex in North Little Rock, Arkansas, my mind was racing. While I sat at a red light at a busy intersection in the Levy business district close to my residence, straight ahead I noticed a small black dog darting back and forth across the road some fifty yards past the intersection. He appeared sure to be hit if he kept up such activity, so as I came thru the intersection I pulled off the road and stopped behind some buildings. I rolled down the window and gave a shout out at the apparently lost little fella. To my dismay I saw him dart in front of and away from my vehicle, as if to be running from my hailing. So much for that rescue effort, I thought to myself, and proceeded to back out onto the road. In so doing as I looked backward and down, there, standing beside my door, was this curly-haired, black ball of energy with sparkling brown eyes peering up at me as if to say Hey, here I am! So I opened my door for him. I didn’t have time to issue any coaxing words, for in a flash, with only two quick hops, he crossed my lap and landed firmly in the passenger seat. He smiled unabashedly, looked straight at me, and said Come on Buddy, what are you waiting on? Let’s get outta here! So off we went. And that’s
