    The Harriet May Savitz Writers of the Roundtable

    The ten authors of A Collection of Words from the Roundtable belong to a senior’s writing group in Bradley Beach NJ. They range in age from their late fifties to their early nineties, and have experienced so many aspects of life that they decided to share with the reading public. The four men and six women range from the military and administration, professional photography and the entertainment industry to medicine and psychiatry and education and everything in between. The authors have been writing together for over ten years and felt that the quality of work they produce shouldn’t be exclusive and wanted to share their words with everyone. Most of the authors have been published in various media, from newspapers and magazines to short story anthologies, as well as books and novels.       We continue to write in her memory and want to share the gift of words she has taught us. As we sit at the Roundtable, her knowledge, encouragement, and inspiration remain part of our writing. She taught us to believe in ourselves and to use words to let others explore what we have experienced during the past century. The written word is magical. Whether the pages are filled with words of truth or fiction, they give the reader the escape into knowledge, history, mystery, adventure and love.

      Harriet May Savitz has written over thirty books in her lifetime. Her children’s books, essays and knowledge of how to improve the lives of those with physical disabilities are a legacy that will live forever. Harriet may no longer sit at our Roundtable, but her spirit still guides us.

      Introduction

      The Harriet May Savitz Writers of the Roundtable is a writing group comprised of over a dozen people who attend a weekly hour-and-a-half writing session. We encourage our members to bring an original piece of work—a poem, story, or written paragraph—of something they have recently composed. Each individual reads his or her work and the others offer helpful critiques.

      Most of us are published writers and authors, our work appearing in newspapers, magazines, or books. Our purpose for publishing this book—A Collection of Words from the Roundtable—is to emphasize our group’s individual work and talent and to highlight each specific writing style. We wish to expand our fan base beyond our members by reaching out to the public and inviting them into our literary world. Our stories represent themes about people from all walks of life.

      We hope you enjoy the selections of work exhibited in our book and we encourage you to share your favorite stories with others. There is no greater joy for a writer than to have a complete stranger compliment his or her writing skill.

      Ruth J. Abramowitz

      Ruth Abramowitz lives in Asbury Park and is a published writer and author. She started writing poetry and essays at age twelve. Her writings record a history of the past, present, and foretell a hope for the future. From Horse and Buggy to the Moon, her first book of essays, was published in December 2007. She firmly believes that life is a gift we share with others. She spent her career years as an executive secretary employed by government agencies and private industry. Her motto is, Live one day at a time.

      Gary S. Crawford

      Gary S. Crawford is a published author and local historian. He has published two books and many print and website articles on area historical subjects, as well as a horror fantasy novel. He is considered an authority on the Morro Castle ship disaster. Long active with many local non-profits, he has handled publicity and public relations for these groups. Raised in Neptune City, he lives in Neptune with his wife, grown daughter, and three grandchildren. He has been a member of the Roundtable since March 2011.
