    I’m not ail atheist or ail evangelist. I didn’t write Inquiry to prove something or to uphold a particular point of view. Just consider my hook an information manual, and apply it as you see fit.

    My wish is that reading these pages will make a worthwhile difference in the lives of people-—especially my wife, our children, and our grandchildren.

    Gospels

    Origin

    Oral history is unwritten information provided by an eyewitness that has been a part of an historic event. Toward the end of the first century, the oral history concerning Jesus was decreasing, because his apostles and other eyewitnesses were dying. Since the oral history lacked written documentation, it was very easy for disagreementsregarding the interpretation to occur.

    These factors made it necessary to gather writings that accurately portrayed the life and teachings of Jesus. This resulted in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (the first four "books of the New Testament).

    All the Gospels were written in Greek. The word gospel was originally derived as a translation for the Greek word evangelion, meaning good news. The name Jesus is derived from a Greek translation for the
