About this ebook

Russ Peery grew up in Madison, Connecticut, not far from Long Island Sound. He joined the US Navy near the end of World War II, graduated from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania in 1949 and from Andover Newton Theological School in Massachusetts in 1953. He served one parish in Maine and several in Connecticut. Before he turned fifty, a three-week course in woodworking at Penland Craft School began Russs transformation from hobbyist to profession woodworker. Eventually his work was in galleries all over the country.

Russ and his wife, Merle, have been married for more than 40 years. They moved from Connecticut to Tennessee in 1986, then to the Good Samaritan Society-Kissimmee Village, Kissimmee, Florida, in 2011. Russ has two children from his first marriage, an adopted daughter from his second, plus several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Russ has always liked to write, but did not get serious about writing poetry until near the end of the last century. His readers, whom Merle calls his congregation, eagerly anticipate his new poems (posted almost daily at http://www.russpeery.com), relish his fresh perspectives on the common things of life, and share deeply in the emotions and observations he so clearly articulates. You will find that Russs words offer hope, amusement, contemplation, and wonderment.

Open up this book and experience Russ Peery at his finest! He will seem like an old friend.

Russ Peery

Russ Peery grew up in Madison, Connecticut, on the shore of Long Island Sound. After serving in the US Navy, he graduated from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania in 1949 and from Andover Newton Theological School in Massachusetts in 1953. His first parish was in Maine. Then he served four churches in Connecticut, and finally one in Mt Pleasant, Tennessee. In the late 1970s, a three-week course in woodworking at Penland School of Crafts began Russ’s transformation from hobbyist to professional woodworker. He and his wife, Merle, have been married for more than 40 years. They lived in Connecticut and Tennessee, then moved to Florida in 2011. Russ has three children, several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Russ has always liked to write, but got serious about writing poetry about 20 years ago. In 2012, POSTLUDE was published. Despite expecting it to be his last, he kept on writing and his readers kept on positively responding to his new poems (posted online several times a week at http://www.russpeery.com). They relish his fresh perspectives on the common things of life, and share deeply in the emotions and observations he so clearly articulates. Open up this new collection of poems and continue to experience a smorgasbord of hope, amusement, contemplation, insight, and wonderment.

    FOREWORD

My therapist wife says, People don’t do something over and over again unless they get something out of it. That is why I write poems. I get a lot out of it. First is the satisfaction of creativity—being involved in making something, hopefully worthwhile. Second is the pleasure of sharing. That may involve a little presumption, but a little of it is OK. And last is anticipating various responses. If there were no feedback, I would have ceased writing. When I began to get serious about my poetry, expectations included the hope for responses.

Over the years I’ve put together a few booklets of my writings. The last one, I considered to be my last. After all, I am getting
