Chapter One
You’re The One
Have you ever met a guy and thought, I just have to have him, but he was taken? What if you could feel it in your soul that he was meant for you? Would you still chase after him? Would you think about karma if you got him? How true is the saying, "What goes around comes around?" Well, here’s my story. I believe in fate and things happening for a reason. The man of my dreams has come into my life. Why, because things happen for a reason. So with that being said, and fate on my side, what I want I’m destined to have, or am I?
*******
It’s Saturday night and my plans are set. The Hot Spot is where my girlfriend Camille and I go every Saturday night. I didn’t used to go clubbing until I met Camille. I didn’t do a lot of things, come to think of it, until I met Camille. I moved here to Philadelphia, PA, since my job was relocating. I work for a banking firm in the Accounts Payable Department.
One day when I was taking my lunch break, I drove over to the mall, and bumped into Camille on my way out. She was handing out flyers, promoting a party at this club called The Nightlife. When I was handed one, I briefly looked it over and gave it back to her. She asked me have I ever been there before and I told her no. She wanted to know why I gave it back. I told her the club scene was really not my thing, but thanks anyway. That response did not fly with Camille. She went on to explain that this party was going to be like no other and that I should really check it out. She said they’ll have a little something for everyone. Then she asked me if I drank. I told her from time to time I may have a little something. Then she said that I should at least come and check out the atmosphere, have a few drinks and let my hair down. She promised that I would have a good time or she would personally give me my money back. I was a little skeptical at first, wondering why she was trying so hard to get me to come there and how many other people she extended this offer to. Since she offered to give me back my money, I decided I had nothing to lose, so why not check it out?
I had gone that upcoming weekend to see if it really was worth my time to come. Camille spotted me at the bar, ordering a drink. She was surprised that I actually made it. I was surprised myself, but I had nothing else going on, so I came. She ended up ordering a drink as well. We sat at the bar and talked to one another like we were best friends. I got to know a lot about her. When her man Ramón came she introduced me to him. She introduced me to a lot of people that night, but one person in particular stood out the most: Camille’s best friend Udonis. It was his party that was being held there. She was handing out the flyers to promote it. Then everything made sense. It caught me off guard when she said, best friend.
I thought she was going to say her man or something before I met Ramón. The way their rapport was with one another you would’ve thought they were a couple. He was so handsome. I mean beautiful smile with the sexiest lips, strong handshake, and just oozing with confidence. Not to mention his body was cut, chiseled to perfection. I was in love. I needed to know more about him. I was suddenly a girl on a mission. I couldn’t stop staring at him that night, as much as I tried. He commanded the room. I had so many questions for Camille about him, and although I didn’t want to seem too eager, or come across as being nosey, I was curious. Then a few minutes later one of my questions was answered. He had a girlfriend. I saw this young lady walk over to him and he looked very happy to see her. He hugged her and they kissed, and did they kiss. My heart sunk immediately to the floor. I thought, well Daneen, it’s not the end of the world, as long as he’s not married anything can happen. Camille tapped me on the arm and asked, was I okay? I told her I was fine and she was right, this place was really nice. We’ve been hanging together ever since.
The Hot Spot is the club that Udonis currently owns. Camille said he’s had aspirations of doing that for a long time. He brought the Nightlife, changed the name and made renovations. It’s really upscale and is booked to capacity every weekend. I loved going there. I hoped to run into him every time I went, but he’s not there all the time, so it makes it hard. I’ve gotten to know Udonis a little bit from the times he was there, but I’ve gotten most of my information from Camille. She calls him Donnie. I didn’t even know at first that Donnie wasn’t his real name. She said it’s Udonis Grant Blackwell III, but people that are close to him and have known him for a while call him Donnie. I loved the name Udonis and have been calling him by it ever since I was told it. Now it’s just a matter of getting to know him on a Donnie
type of level. That was the move next. She said he’s been with his girlfriend for a little over a year. I’d finally gotten around to asking her some questions about him. I wanted to wait until Camille and I were really comfortable with one another before I got personal. I didn’t want her to be suspicious of me. She didn’t think anything of it. She told me they’ve been friends since childhood. She said he’s 26 years old, has no children, and just bought a house. I thought, wow! I’m 26, rent my apartment, have no children and don’t own anything, not even my car. But I’m cute, got a big butt, and the deepest dimples that accentuate my smile and captivate the best of them. I’m a force to be reckoned with, too.
I was looking through my closet to see what I was going to wear. I loved buying clothes. I owned plenty of those. My wardrobe has expanded big time since I started going out. I had tons of clothes with the tags still attached. I had to wear something new each weekend. Call me anal, but I have to buy three outfits, just in case.
Just in case (JIC) for me means, if one don’t fit or look right I’ll have two more to choose from. I hate trying on clothes in stores. Then there’s just in case I get to the club and someone has the same thing on as me, although that’s never happened, or just in case I don’t come home that night, then I can still look good the next day. I keep a bag on stash in my car. You never know what the night might bring, you know… just in case. You can tell where my priorities were. I finally decided on an outfit, got in the shower, and got dressed.
I was meeting Camille there like we do every Saturday night. In the beginning we used to ride together, until she met someone who wanted to take her out to eat. This was during one of her and Ramón’s separations. She didn’t want to go and leave me, since she was my ride, and ever since then we’ve been driving separately. When I arrived at the club, Camille was sitting up in V.I.P. We have our own table, of course. To my surprise, Udonis was with her. This was going to be a good night, I thought. I joined the two of them at the booth. Camille had already ordered a drink for me, so after I said hello to the two of them, I started sipping on it. The two of them had been talking about somewhere he had just come back from. I was listening and taking everything in. He said it felt good to be back and in the mix of things again. Camille asked him where his girlfriend Inez was. He told her she was at home, probably asleep. She had traveled with him, so she didn’t feel like coming out tonight. That was music to my ears.
Keith came over to our table to see if Camille wanted to dance. He was friends with her and Udonis. We ended up becoming friends because of their association. Keith is always messing with me. He’s such a clown, but he’s cool. She got up and followed him to the dance floor. Udonis looked at me, smiled and asked if I was enjoying my drink, since it’s been keeping me quiet ever since I came in. I told him I was, amongst other things. We sat there and talked about everything until a co-worker of mine named Maurice came over and interrupted our conversation. I was so upset with him. Udonis didn’t mind, of course. He said he needed to check on a few things anyway, but to tell Camille that he’d be back over a little later. I wanted to strangle Maurice, but I refrained and came back to my senses. I told him to have a seat and began to talk to him.
What brings you here tonight? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in here before,
I asked.
I could never get in before. By the time I got off my second job and came here it’d be too late to get in.
Well, how’d you manage to make it in here tonight?
I’m on vacation for a while, so I was finally able to get in. I wasn’t expecting to see you up in here, V.I.P. at that. Okay, big baller.
I’m in here every Saturday night. My girlfriend is best friends with the owner.
Oh! No wonder you get to sit in V.I.P. I’m going to start coming in with you.
I don’t think so. I see you enough at work.
I didn’t say I was hanging out with you. I’m just trying to be in the V.I.P section. Damn, it’s some sexy ladies up in here.
Wait a minute, Maurice. How’d you get up in here now?
I’m really not. I just told the guard that you were my sister and I needed to get the keys from you.
What?
I had to say something to get up here and check it out. I noticed you were up here, so I told him you were my sister. He told me I got five minutes, so I better head back to where we common folk are hanging out at. If you have the time Miss V.I.P., I would like a dance.
He is so funny sometimes.
I’ll keep you in mind,
I said, as I giggled. He waved goodbye as he walked away. I couldn’t believe he told the guard that. I watched him as he walked back down the steps out of the V.I.P area. The guard was watching him too. Shortly after, Camille came back to the table.
You’ve been sitting here all this time?
Yeah. At first I was talking to Udonis, which by the way, he said he’ll be back over here later. Then Maurice from my job came over here and I was talking to him.
I’m hot. Did you see Ramón? Oh my God, he looks so good tonight.
No, I haven’t seen him yet. You need to stop acting like you’re mad and go talk to him.
He has eyes just like I do. If he wants to talk to me he knows where to find me.
You two are something else.
Ramón is Camille’s off-and-on boyfriend. Right now I guess they’re off. Ramón is cute too. He’s Puerto Rican. He has dark features, brown hair that he keeps cut low, and is stocky. The two of them have been off and on since I’ve known Camille. I don’t know why they even bother breaking up. It never lasts and they both know they be fronting. Ramón was on his way over to our table while Camille and I were talking.
Aye yo! Can I holler at you for a minute, man?
What is it Ramón, because if you came over here to argue, I’m not gonna go there with you tonight,
Camille snapped.
I don’t want to argue. Can you come here please? Damn!
How bout I go and you two stay here,
I said. I owe someone a dance anyway.
I walked off to find Maurice, so those two could have some privacy. Ramón sat in my spot when I got up. He looked at Camille with those sad eyes.
Look, I’m sorry man. I’m tired of this arguing all the time.
Then why don’t you stop being so jealous all the time Ramón?
You don’t make it easy you know? Why you always gotta be up in here?
Because I like being here. You know that.
You keep on dancing with these guys the way you do, we’re gonna have a problem. I’m serious, Camille.
What are you talking about? It was only Keith.
I’m not talking about Keith either.
I know you’re not talking. You constantly have females up in your face and do you say anything to them? No! I have to check bitches constantly when it comes to your yellow ass.
I don’t know what you’re talking about man. Every female up in here knows who my girl is. I don’t even have to make it known anyway, thanks to you. You open up your mouth and do it for me.
Exactly! Because you don’t say shit!
Look, I’m ready to go. Are you coming with me man or what?
She mocked him, "Are you coming with me man. I’m not ready to leave yet. Can we just chill up here for a little while longer? I promise I’ll be ready to go before long."
Okay, but I meant what I said Camille about these dudes. I’ll be watching.
Alright Ramón! I’ll tone it down, gees. Now can you dance with me?
Then can we leave?
Ugh!
*******
Meanwhile, I was walking around looking at everyone and trying to find Maurice. I bumped into Udonis instead. He was coming out of the back. It looked like a storage room. I’ve never been in there before to know if it is one, exactly. He approached me.
You having a good time tonight?
he asked.
I always have a good time when I come here.
That’s what I like to hear. I see you finally finished off that drink.
I’m ready for another.
He smiles.
Have you danced yet?
I’m working on it. Would you like to be the first to dance with me?
Sure, I’ll dance with you. I’ll be ready in one minute.
I could hardly wait. He is such a
