    Preface

Writing this book is a result of a lifelong search for satisfaction. During my college years and beyond, the search for pleasure, enjoyment, and satisfaction led me down various paths that never quite brought complete fulfillment. The search included looking for fulfillment in romantic relationships, accolades, and accomplishments; the search even included looking for contentment in the church and spiritual principles. During this journey, there was one conclusion that was discovered: everything you need to be fulfilled is inside of you.

What fulfills you? Where do you look for satisfaction and completeness? Is it in money and a well-paying job? Is it in prestige, status, or leaving a legacy? It might even be in dating, sex, or an intimate relationship. None of these fixes are permanent; this book focuses on receiving satisfaction and completeness that is not temporary. Three concepts that will help you improve your spirituality and personal relationships are (1) realizing that everything you require for satisfaction and inner peace is already inside you, (2) understanding that satisfaction and completeness come from serving people and pleasing God—and both are key concepts to understand your life’s purpose—and (3) referring to biblical principles and scriptures for direction and purpose instead of trying to fill voids with other things that can only be filled by Christ.

The inspiration behind writing this book is a desire to help people confront issues that singles and couples typically face. Many of us associate feelings of completeness with attainable status, positions, and possessions. Many people are searching for something outside of themselves. You can call it peace, love, fulfillment, romance, purpose, or destiny. For you, a different void could cause you to seek satisfaction and contentment outside yourself.

The God in You: Discovering True Happiness Using Biblical Principles helps you know that you can live a life of contentment and completeness in a world that otherwise promises only temporary pleasure. As human beings, we desire intimacy, freedom of choice, a comfortable lifestyle, and much more—but the change that leads to fulfillment of these desires has to start from within with a little guidance. I explain how, in a world rife with temporary highs, there is a promise that can fulfill your deep longing.

    Chapter 1

Looking for Satisfaction Outside of Yourself

Marie started imagining her wedding day with Michael. She envisioned a Peruvian-themed wedding and a Mediterranean honeymoon. At the mature age of thirty-eight, she thought, I have met the love of my life . The only problem was Marie had never been out with Michael before, but she had created an imaginary wedding and honeymoon without discovering if she even loved Michael. Marie was a seeker and you will read more about her in Chapter 6. During high school, and even during my college years, I frequently came across seekers—those who search for something or someone to complete and fulfill them. Seekers can look for completeness and satisfaction in romance, experiences, possessions, thrills, success, sex, or other activities that promise
