PREFACE
Every autumn my family traveled to Camden, Maine to visit my eighty year old grandmother, Rosalie O’Houlihan. She lived in the log cabin her grandfather built. Although the house had an addition and many other updates through the years, the original log cabin was her favorite place to sit. Since we both enjoyed creative writing, we always spent hours reading our most recent poetry, and stories to each other. On one of these visits, she asked me if I ever looked at a house and was stirred with wonder. When I told her yes, she smiled pleasingly. Looking up at Mount Megunticook, she told me when she was my age she liked to bring her breakfast to the porch. She would create stories as she watched the sun chase away the gray fog unveiling a mysterious Victorian House. It was nestled in the trees and mingled with the mountain peaks about 800 feet above sea level.
Like me, my grandmother was a dreamer. She told me one of her favorite stories she made up involved a butler who arrived at the log cabin, wearing a black suit with a matching top hat. In his hand, he held an invitation to a grand ball being held at the Victorian House. Other times, she thought about hiking the mountain and knocking on the front door. But her thoughts gathered quickly when she remembered the extremely rugged trail she and her grandfather walked several years earlier. Wonder was all she could do. Until, the day after she turned fifteen. That’s when the real mystery began that changed her life forever. This is her story.

The birds chirping loudly in the woods surrounding her house woke Rosalie early that October morning. The cool breeze blowing through her bedroom window made her shiver. Tossing the blankets to one side, she slipped out of her warm bed and walked to the window. As she looked out, her attention was drawn to a road where the sun twinkled more brightly than ever through the leaves. At first glance, it seemed that the road was wider. She rubbed her tired, brown eyes and took another look. "It
