Introduction
We have a lot of problems facing our country today and the root cause for many of these problems is Unemployment! If we can solve this problem then some of the other issues facing our country might be easier to resolve. But how do we do this?
I believe it is time to take bold actions that will help reduce the unemployment rate to a much lower level and at the same time make an investment in our country. This is a proposal for creation of a new transportation system in America. Build this and it will be used.
This story is about a project that will help invigorate our manufacturing industries for decades, stir innovation, encourage students to seek education in mathematics and engineering and strengthen our ability to compete and trade in the international marketplace. This is a project where it will not make sense to outsource the work to other countries. I believe that this project in conjunction with a commitment to addressing our infrastructure problems will be a revival for our manufacturing industries and our economy.
We are the greatest nation on earth and the main reason is we have the greatest foundation for a free government ever devised; the United States Constitution.
Second, we have the greatest defense forces in the world today; a brave and dedicated voluntary force of men and women serving our country!
Third, we have a population that on whole is the most generous in the world. Americans are willing to come to the aid of a neighbor in need, whether it is across the street or on the other side of the world.
We need to improve our economy because it is a large part of being the greatest nation on earth. Without a vibrant domestic economy that includes a strong manufacturing base that can create any goods needed, a nation may not remain a great nation for long.
One example is the Soviet Union; they did not have a system of government like we do, but at one time they had one of the strongest armed forces in the world. But what they did not have was a strong economy that could produce domestic goods and services as well as military equipment for their forces. Their leaders chose only the latter.
History has several examples of nations that went the same way. The founding fathers of our country provided a map for us to create a great nation with many individual rights and freedoms. Along with that comes a responsibility by our leaders to follow the constitution and the will of the people. We the people have a responsibility to elect those leaders who will protect those freedoms, and follow the will of the people.
Chapter 1
America Seeks Solutions to Unemployment Problem
Since the summer of 2011, I have had a lot of spare time. I started off watching a lot more sports on the cable and local channels. Eventually, I began watching news and business programs. In the morning I usually split my viewing time between three or four cable business channels, and then in the afternoon I would mix in some of the news shows. I would finish off the day with a combination of news and business programs and some prime time shows in the evening. It seems that many of the networks and cable channels lean one way or another politically speaking, so I watch various news channels so that I can get a wide range of opinions and comment on the news of the day. Whenever I needed a break I would watch game shows and for awhile, I got hooked on watching The Price is Right.
Time and time again, commentators and guests on these business and news programs similarly expressed their frustrations about the number of unemployed, even about what work will be available for the returning service men and women, and most of these people asked basically the same question, as for example, What can be done to create more construction and manufacturing jobs
? How can we get a sustained economy going? What is the catalyst?
After awhile, it felt like they were talking to me personally. They did not directly state, if you have an answer or idea, send it in. But, I reasoned they must be implying that they wanted a solution from someone. So I went from there and started thinking about the core problem of the economy and after a short time, the answer seemed fairly simple to me. It affects millions of people; a lack of opportunity to find and get a good job.
I also remember that on a few of these programs, I heard some people affirm that there are jobs out there, and that all these unemployed people need do is get out there and look for one! Well, to some extent I would agree with that sentiment as there are some jobs out there. I know that if you have special skills that someone is looking for you may find that job; say in information technology, or in the health care field. Additionally, they usually followed up with the recommendation that you get some training if you do not have the skills employers are seeking. That is all they need do. It was not mentioned, that once you get the training, many find out that another requirement for the position is experience. It can be very frustrating.
Some say that if you are unemployed, all you need to do is start your own business! I do not totally agree with that statement, but I do agree that every citizen has the right to pursue his or her dreams and either succeed or fail. You cannot say that about every country, can you? The truth is that many people have come here from other countries, and many still dream about coming to America, just for the opportunity to live in freedom and start their own business.
In reality though, I think that for any trade or service in a given area, there is a finite amount of potential customers for sales or services, before saturation occurs. If you are only competing against a reasonable number; let the best business win. This is how it should be in a free market driven economy, right. My point is that for everyone in our economy who is out of work, starting their own business is not a realistic solution to the unemployment problem.
Many people have their own opinion on why we have such a huge unemployment problem in our country and who is to blame for it. I do too, but at this point, I am not looking at someone to blame. What is important for us to recognize and agree on, is that there is a major unemployment and under employed problem in America and find a solution to it.
The problem has been building for decades and I believe it is directly related to the loss of jobs in our manufacturing industries. We have tried to compensate for this problem by spending billions of dollars on short term projects that in most cases, employ only a few for a short time. On an annual basis, we have to spend billions of dollars on support programs to keep the millions of people without a job sustained and that is only at a minimal level. Of course without tax revenue coming in our budget deficit continues to grow. Last but not least is that the value of our dollar continues to shrink. Even if you are one of the fortunate ones who have money, you must occasionally be concerned that you will need more money just to stay even; why, because every year the value of our dollar seems to buy less and less.
As for me, I kept thinking about the unemployment problem and eventually, came up with what I believe is a solution to the problem. I reasoned that we could fix a large portion of the unemployment problem for decades if we had a project in America, like the one I have described here. I also determined that a key part of getting this project accepted and underway is knowing how it will be paid for, or funded. You may disagree, but I believe the project would be most beneficial without a majority of the funds coming from our government treasury. For one reason, we cannot keep adding to America’s budget deficit; it needs to be reduced. For another, we need to get this project going as soon as we can and if the federal government is controlling all aspects of this project, it would be decades before it is completed and thus many of its benefits lost.
I believe the American National Transportation System (ANTS) is that solution to the unemployment problem we have in America, and this is my attempt to convince you that it is too.
I am a private citizen who has spent about the last 40 years analyzing and designing systems in the world of Information Technology. I am not degreed nor do I claim any particular expertise in the areas of construction, engineering, or manufacturing.
To keep this story short, I have provided the current links to the information I reference, rather than add the material to this book. Unfortunately, some internet links change over time and no longer point directly to the original source. However, by using key words related to the information in any particular section, you can usually obtain similar sites or the same sources I used for my research.
The first part describes the system and its components; the next part covers the cost, impacts, and benefits of the ANTS project, followed by a section that provides three methods to fund the project and an organizational plan to manage it. Then least important, I added a section containing my thoughts and opinions on the unemployment problem and some of its’ causes; it might be interesting to see if you and I agree on any of the reasons I have listed. Then if you are curious or interested, I have a brief piece on how this idea came to me.
Finally, I believe most Americans are concerned in one way or another with the situation we are in. You may be unemployed, or related to someone
