About this ebook

This collection offers inspirational and motivational insight on the reality of living by faith.

Thank God for a love that went right on reaching down to us, even after we nailed it to a tree!

If we need to make some changes, picking January 1 as a starting point wont help much. The changes God requires of us have to do with courage, discipline, and faith. They are spiritual battles that are waged daily, and we dare not leave them for the first of January.

Sometimes we are like people going up in an elevator, holding on to our heavy suitcase. Put it down, and the elevator will take care of it for you. When living by faith, you are instructed to give all your worries and cares to God for He cares about what happens to you (1 Peter 5:7 NLB).

Revival should be an everyday affair, where day by day I come under the lordship of Christ. Its not what comes down from heaven that brings revival; its who is already in your temple and mine. Its not a vertical downpour; its a horizontal takeover. As we allow the Holy Spirit to claim all the ground in our lives, thats revival!

I would like to thank my wife Sandy, who has shared as a full partner in the Joy, Blessings and Experiences of 50 years of ministry with me. It was because of her persistence and timeless patience that these stories and events were collated, edited and finally published into this little book.

I want to give my blessings and thanks to our four children, Karen, Kevin, Kristy and Kathy who encouraged me in my ministry and took part in it and added adventure and excitement, whether by traveling with us and helping run the Wilderness Programs for teens or with their gifted musical abilities.

My thanks and praise goes to my co-workers in the Mission for the past 50 years. They were the inspiration and illustration for my thoughts and words. They are truly the Champions for Christ that I write about in this book.

    FOREWORD

I’ve spent many long days and even longer nights at the helm of ships in all kinds of weather conditions, from fair and beautiful to hurricane force winds with mountainous seas, for almost 50 years now. In 1953, when I went on an adventure trip to Alaska with Marine Medical Mission as a crewmember on board the l36 foot Willis Shank we traveled north out of Seattle through British Columbia and into Alaska in ministry outreach to native Indian villages. We went into the very isolated communities reached only by ship or seaplane. I had no intention of it being anything more than a summer experience, but God had something else in mind.

I found myself becoming involved with people… people that I perceived to be in need of a clear understanding of who Jesus Christ is and how their lives could be transformed by His power.

Within a year or so I found myself learning the challenging skills of ship handling, navigation and seamanship. Over the next few years I was Captain on all of the ships owned by the Mission including the 136 foot Willis Shank, the 86 foot Nunivak, the 70 foot Luke Brown’, and the 50 foot Hideaway".

Through these experiences I’ve learned that the man at the helm must rely on God’s power and control and make decisions that depend on God’s wisdom.

In 1961, I was asked to step to the helm as General Director of Marine Medical Mission, now known as North America Indigenous Ministries, and at a very young age I took on this monumental task.

In an attempt to communicate clearly with the people God raised up to be a part of this ministry through prayers and finances, I began to write monthly letters simply addressed to Dear Teammate. Sometimes the letters were insightful about the ministry, sometimes a challenge to grow in Jesus in their own lives, but mostly to say Thank You for being a part of my life and the lives of our staff and our ministry. Over the years these letters have accumulated and finally, after more than 45 years of being committed to this ministry, my wife and co-laborer set out to go through this mountain of letters and put them into some order that could possibly be a source of continued blessing to you and others in the years to come.

After a major stroke in 1994, it was necessary for me to step down as General Director, but my vision and goal for the reconciliation of Indian people to Christ is ongoing and Sandy and I continue in this ministry.

Thank God if you are blessed by these short messages from a missionary who has served God at the Helm for nearly 50 years in obedience to the Great Commission.

Have you moved out of God’s viewfinder?

Isa 45: 3 (KJV) And I will give thee the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the Lord which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.

As we pulled out of Pruth Harbor the sun was shining, the water was a sparkling blue and the tree covered mountains dark green. It was spectacular! But up ahead, fog… a thick blanket a couple of hundred feet deep stretching out into the open ocean.

We could hear other vessels reporting their positions to traffic control over the radio indicating visibility down to near zero for at least 60 miles south… our direction for that day’s travel. Sandy turned on the radar to let it warm up and adjust to maximum clarity… we would be depending on it to guide us almost totally.

Then we moved into the fog. A strange feeling actually, one minute the bright sunshine lighting the way… the next… nothing but gray. In the last fleeting glimpse of the shoreline, the trees had turned murky green and the water slate gray. While the radar illuminated the shoreline and the blips of a few ships in our area,
