About this ebook

Twelve billion years ago, a forty-five billion year old singularity drifted in an otherwise empty cosmos. Intelligent life could only look inward. To look outward was to see nothing. The inhabitants of this pre big bang world called their planet Unitasia. The mega planet drifted in an endless sea of frigid barren blackness. No stars to stare at while making a wish or to navigate by on dark nights. No moons to smile upon the harvest or create the rhythmic ebb and flow of ocean tides. As the planets internal sun supernovas, a young man and his girl friend are propelled into infinity in an ark built by his father. Desperate to preserve their species, they seed several planets in the post Big Bang universe with clones of themselves. The clones build technologically advanced societies but disease and war threaten Armageddon. These are the highest of stakes as the future of all known intelligent life hangs in the balance. Xetonian Trade I, The Seeding is both an intriguing creation story and an exciting science fiction tale of intergalactic wars, mind-boggling technology, and the future made possible by it.

    About The Author

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to my grandchildren. Every time I hug them it’s like hugging my grown sons one more time.

    A PSALM

Lord, thou hast been out dwelling place in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art god.

Thou turnest man to destruction, and sayest, return, ye children of men.

For a thousand years in thy light are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.

    PSALM 90: 1-4

    AUTHOR’S PREFACE

The Xetonian Trades was originally published in 2003 as the first book in a planned science fiction trilogy. The second and third books in the Xetonian Trades series, The Augerite Hordes and "The Reapers" were published in 2013.

This book is a second edition of the first book and is subtitled, "The Seeding". A second edition was written in order to clean up the story line, better clarify the background and basis for the now completed trilogy and to some extent minimize the number of secondary characters.

The story you are about to read is fiction. The possibilities the story suggests are not. What was science fiction yesterday is being developed today and will become the technology that carries mankind to the stars tomorrow. Since the Xetonian Trades trilogy is intended primarily for North American readers, all Unitasian, Cantonian and Xetonian dialogue has been translated into English. Before you begin the book, please consider the following.

Time and distance are continuums with no beginning or ending. It is difficult for most of us to accept this fact. The idea that the dimensions of our universe are infinite is incomprehensible. It is beyond our intuitive, cognitive and reasoning abilities. As a matter of faith, we accept that a spiritual life of some sort awaits us after death; we may accept and even depend on luck, extrasensory perception, psychic readings and horoscopes to get us through our daily lives. But infinity—no way!

Infinity however, at least on a relative basis, must exist. Imagine traveling at one trillion times the speed of light for one trillion light years and suddenly coming to a brick wall with a large sign on it that reads, The end of the universe. Would you believe the sign? I don’t think so. You could not believe it any more than Christopher Columbus believed the Earth was flat. All walls have two sides. No matter how big the wall or how many you run into, there will always be something on the other side. Our universe must be infinite.

The fact that time has no beginning or ending is equally disturbing. Did the first second of time tick off at the exact moment the big bang occurred? Was time running forward or backwards just prior to the big bang and then reverse? These are questions we can never answer with certainty. The only sensible answer however, are that time, like distance, is infinite with only relative beginnings and endings. Any other explanation would create an unacceptable discontinuity for astronomers and mathematicians.

Statistically, the chance of intelligent life existing uniquely on the planet Earth, in an infinite universe, is zero. Moreover, it seems certain that a full range of societies in various stages of evolution must exist.

It is also reasonable to assume that the basic attributes of intelligence, whether created by a universal god or by natural evolution, would be the same. The ability to reason, the need to love and be loved, self awareness and the knowledge that one is mortal would be common to all intelligent life.

Moreover, the existence of creation-based life and purely evolution-based life, i.e., created from the proverbial pool of chemicals struck by lightning; do not have to be mutually exclusive. There is no logical reason why both biological systems cannot exist side by side. Once they exist, both life systems should experience continuous evolution and progress through four basic stages. Stage one is unique to evolutionary based life. The other three are common to both.

Stage one is a long period during which intelligent life comes into existence through natural evolution. Since no two planets can possibly have identical environments, the resulting physical and biological variety would be as diverse as the cosmos itself.

During stage two, Earth’s current stage and the most logical stage for creation-based life to be inserted into an ecosystem by a supreme being, the ability to understand the basic physics common to the universe is achieved. Unlike evolution-based life, the diversity of creation-based life is minimal. Physical and biological attributes would be similar, unless there is more than one Supreme Being seeding the cosmos.

During this phase, development of the sciences, nuclear energy, complex tools, computers and transportation systems necessary to fully exploit natural resources are developed. This is the most dangerous stage of planet development. The populations on these planets are still economically, racially, ethnically and religiously fractionated. These factors, combined with the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction, keep stage-two planets on the brink of self-destruction. Evolutionary-based intelligent life either perishes or is enslaved by creation-based life during this stage.

Stage three planets have developed practical, safe and affordable methods for exploitation of their solar system, including limited terra forming of planets and asteroids. Access to open space is still limited by the lack of practical light speed transport. The most powerful military ships can achieve near-light speed, but they must accelerate for up to two years using some form of impulse drive. A solar system based economy replaces the global economy that characterized stage two planets. The demand for workers exceeds the supply. High wages for everyone, free land for immigrants on numerous planets and moons, an excess of natural resources and essentially free energy results in an upper-middle-class life for all citizens.

Stage four planets are a totally different story. These planets have transcended the intellectual and scientific capability that powered stage three planets by orders of magnitude. Newtonian physics and nuclear based energy has been replaced by a complete understanding of the relationship and interactions between the nuclear strong and weak forces, gravity and electromagnetic energy. Validating Einstein’s unified field theory opens the door to a new physics and control of almost unlimited energy. These societies have access to the infinite time-space continuum.

Travelers from stage four societies must deal with the relativistic effects of hypervelocity. A person standing on the ground and a person riding on a passing train approaching the speed of light see each other go by at the same velocity. However, the passing of time is slowing down for the train rider relative to the ground observer’s clock. To the ground observer, the train’s mass appears to grow larger and larger as it approaches the speed of light. The person on the train senses none of these effects. To him or her, the scenery is going by at the speed of light but the train’s mass is not increasing and time is passing normally. The relativistic effects of super-light speed create a new problem for deep space navigators in stage four star fleets.

A lifetime to a honey bee is measured in months while a human’s is measured in years. A bird can fly hundreds of miles in a few weeks. A similar trip for an earthworm is virtually impossible unless the worm is in the bird’s stomach.

The differences between a man, a bird, a bee and a worm are just as profound as the differences between phase one through phase four planets. To a worm, a man’s life would seem infinite, and it would seem like he could travel infinite distances at infinite speeds. Everything is relative.

Modern astronomers explain the physical universe by using a combination of physics and astronomy. Mankind explains biological life in terms of creation or natural evolution. Who is right and who is wrong may never be resolved. This story embraces the possibility that both theories are right.

Somewhere in the universe there are ecosystems inhabited by stage four societies. As a man is to the worm, the inhabitants of these planets would appear to us as having capabilities equivalent to gods! The pre-big bang planet Unitasia was such a place. Xetonia was about to become such a place. Earth would take a bit longer.

The explorers hoped that Xetonia could provide desperately needed habitat to relieve overcrowding on Venisha. Their hopes were soon dashed. The long, scorching, windswept summers and short, bitter-cold winters provided an impossible environment for normal civilian inhabitation, at least on a permanent basis.

Xetonia is rich in natural resources, including large, deep, underground potable water aquifers. The surface is negotiable with lightweight environmental suits. Underground facilities provide a comfortable long-term solution to the environmental difficulties.

The combination of environmental constraints and the need to exploit natural resource resulted in Xetonia being zoned for government, military and heavy industrial use only. Moving this activity to Xetonia freed up enough real estate on Venisha to ease the overcrowding problem, allowing Venisha to become a purely residential planet.

Xetonian Empire—Collection of inhabitable planets in the Xetonian solar system consisting of Venisha, Borkin, Klystron, Xetonia, the asteroid Andrea and up until the Xetonian/Cantonian war included the Cantonian home planet Portallus.

    XETONIAN TRADES CHRONOLOGY

    PART I

    PAST AS PROLOGUE

    Chapter One

    PRIMORDIAL FIREBALL

    Place: The Mega Planet Unitasia

    Earth date: 12,000,163,212 BC

Once upon a time everything was a singularity. Intelligent life could only look inward. To look outward was to see nothing.

Twelve billion years ago, a forty-five billion year old singularity drifted in an otherwise empty cosmos. All of the mass distributed in the present day universe was contained in the singularity. The inhabitants of this pre big bang world called their planet Unitasia.

A third of a light year in diameter, the mega planet drifted in an endless sea of frigid barren blackness. The observable universe began and ended there. No stars to stare at while making a wish or to navigate by on dark nights. No moons to smile upon the harvest or create the rhythmic ebb and flow of ocean tides.

Unitasia was a mature, stage three world transitioning to stage four. Technology and social evolution had reached the point where social evils such as war, ethnic and racial prejudice, disease, famine, poverty and crime were nonexistent. There was no military. Small professional police forces existed in large cities but were mostly ceremonial.

Intelligent life had been evolving for four billion years. The most advanced were humanoids, but a number of non-humanoid species had developed limited intellectual capabilities as well.

Most of the non-humanoid species were used as highly capable domestic pets. Two species, the Manassan Tri-legs and the Worjack Greybacks were capable of learning basic communication skills and could be trained to do a wide variety of tasks. The more amiable of the two, the tri-legs, were used solely as domestic help. They were considered highly valuable and enjoyed care equivalent to a champion Kentucky Derby race horse. On Unitasia, some of your pets could tell you what kind of day they had and what chores had been accomplished while you were away.

The Worjack were considered too large and aggressive to be trusted as domestic help. Their four ambidextrous hands and strong backs however were perfect for mundane labor, light manufacturing and service jobs. Both male and female Worjack attended one of the many government-supported job-preparatory schools when they reached adolescence and then entered the work force when considered ready.

The compassionate employment of these much more affordable non-humanoids had killed the android business eons ago. The system was neither slavery nor apartheid. It was a system where social class was naturally determined by intellectual ability. Similar to a family with a mix of mature adults, teenagers and toddlers, the younger, less capable naturally deferred to the older and more capable. In return for the non-humanoids obedience and service, Unitarians provided a safe, even loving environment for all.

The mega planet Unitasia was a hollow ball with a shell averaging 130,000 miles in thickness. In the center was a massive sun. Forty-five billion years earlier, most of the primordial mass of dust and gas that made up the cosmos condensed into a mega sun. Due to Unitasia’s unusual geometry and mass distribution, the local gravity on the outer surface averaged only twice that of Earth. Gravity on the inner surface was weaker due to the pull from the internal sun. The sun’s gravity counterbalanced by its powerful solar wind, helped maintain the concentricity and structural integrity of the planet. Thousands of vent holes prevented over-pressurization of Unitasia’s interior by its constant out-gassing. It was a system in delicate balance.

The interior surface was a hostile environment. Only well-protected solar generation stations, low-gravity manufacturing facilities, scientific research centers, etc., were permitted. Access was licensed by the government and strictly controlled.

Environmental conditions on the outer surface were less draconian. Life flourished around the vent holes scattered across the seemingly endless geode. Each vent hole was unique. The Photon streams from the largest ones supported ecosystems the size of the state of most counties Americas New England states and humanoid
