Foreword
img01.pngI am glad to have a copy of the book The Beloved of the Creator written by Rev. Fr. Raphael Obotama in memory of his late father, Catechist Mark Bassey Obotama (1926-2002) who slept in the Lord in 2002 at the age of seventy six years. As the family celebrates the tenth anniversary of the glorious exit of their illustrious father, this book has the nature of both biography and a primary source of information on the life and times of Catechist Obotama.
It is pertinent to note that Catechist Obotama’s childhood as an orphan was not without set backs and difficult challenges. He was converted to Catholicism during his primary school days. With the assistance given to him by the Irish St. Patrick’s Fathers and the Medical Missionaries of Mary Sisters, Catechist Obotama was able to start a trade and marry a good wife. The fruits of his works can be seen in the solid family upbringing and training of his God-fearing children who are serving in different areas in the Catholic Apostolate. Among the children are two Diocesan Priests and a daughter who is a nun and member of the MMM Congregation.
Catechist Obotama was well known to me. He was one of the pioneer Catechists who selflessly served the local Church in Ikot Ekpene Diocese since its creation in 1963. The memory of this great teacher cannot easily be forgotten by those who had the privilege of living and working with him. Personally I recall that, when my present home Parish, St. Joseph, Okon was under Urua Akpan Parish in the sixties, Catechist Obotama played a prominent role in the preparation of candidates, including myself, for Baptism and First Holy Communion.
He belonged to the first generation of Catechists who formed the Diocesan Catechists Association. He was a promoter of Marian Apostolate and League of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by means of which he was able to establish Legion of Mary and the Sacred Heart centres in Ikot Ekpene Diocese. He was a man of prayer, deep spirituality and solid faith. He had great devotion and belief in the Eucharist. As he did when he was on earth, his life testimony, admonishes all ordained ministers and the entire lay faithful to believe in the Eucharist for the whole life of the Church depends on that. According to Rev. Fr. Raphael, his father Catechist Mark Obotama, as a lay person, could tell by the way a priest celebrated Mass if the priest believed in the Sacrifice of the Mass and the Eucharist or not. This is where the life of Catechist Obotama, poses a great challenge to our Catholic life and faith.
This Book, The Beloved of the Creator by Rev. Fr. Raphael Obotama, who also is the first son of Catechist Obotama is therefore a very befitting memorial for a man who lived a life worthy of emulation. There is no doubt that the impact of Catechist Obotama’s life and teaching is still being felt today in Ikot Ekpene Diocese and beyond where those taught by him along with his children are serving the Church in different places and in various capacities. The simple style adopted in the writing of this book makes it easy to read.

Your father did the right thing in giving you out to serve the Lord… may God give him a place with the saints in heaven.

(Excerpt from a condolence Message to the author, July 24, 2002)
Catechist Obotama was a good friend of mine. He was a good and dedicated catechist even after his retirement, a man of faith and a committed Christian. I was his last pastor on earth and I administered the last sacrament to him before he passed on to eternity on that Sunday morning. Surrounded by his children, he was conscious and responded to all the prayers said during the anointing. He received the Holy Eucharist joyfully and with that I knew he was prepared to leave the world. While the prayers and songs were going on he closed his eyes in acquiescence to the will of God. He died a good man and his death was really a celebration of life. I have no doubts that he has a place with God and the saints in heaven.

Vicar General, Catholic Diocese of Ikot Ekpene.

img01.pngAnd the Sun Rises
Wednesday, November 3, 1926 started in a very normal and unobtrusive manner in the little farming village of Ikot Inyang Udo in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Of course, there were no particular expectations for something out of the ordinary to occur, as the people were used to a routine life.
The village early morning chores mostly for women and children, had started as soon as the cocks began to crow, and one could hear the voices of the children who were running to and from the stream. Wine tappers and their assistants were trooping to their different plants to service the morning drips of fresh wine from the palm trees. The sun began its slow movement, rising elegantly from the east side of the village, casting golden light upon a village that depended on its illumination for most of their quotidian activities.
Thus, the village was going about its typical activities until the shrill cry of a baby emanated from a little hut behind the house of Obot Akpan Nna in Nto Akpan Nna family of Nto Udo Ikpa kindred, announcing the safe arrival of a baby boy delivered by his wife, Adiaha Udo Nnwa. That first cry signified that the baby was quite alive and bubbling. The event evoked hollers of jubilation from the traditional birth attendant and a few women who assisted at the delivery. She, the traditional birth attendant chanted a special tune, which signified the birth of a male child. This chant also attracted the womenfolk around the neighborhood, who trooped to see the new person who had come to join the household of Obot Akpan Nna.
As the neighbors arrived, a spontaneous singing and dancing erupted among the women while the men started yodeling. Within the traditional ethos of Annang nation, a child belongs to the whole village. The birth of one child is therefore a thing of joy for the whole community. The logic here is that Obot Akpan Nna had increased the family membership of Nto Akpan Nna and Nto Udo Ikpa kindred by yet another male member. This is no small feat, bringing a new male into a family. The Annangs celebrate life with pageantry, and this was a cause for celebration.
For Adiaha Udo Nnwa, like any other happy mother of a male child, she could now be certain of a secured place in the family especially as the mother of the first male child, Eka Akpan, for her husband Obot Akpan Nna.
That singular moment of this particular child’s birth changed the mood of the village and, by extension, its history. Accordingly, the hitherto unknown village of Ikot Inyang Udo found its way into many national and international documents because of the birth of this little baby. The baby boy, who was later named Bassey by his proud father, lived to become Catechist Mark Bassey Obotama, a man of faith, a father and grandfather, blessed with many children and grandchildren.
When he was born, many members of his family did not profess the Christian or Catholic faith; therefore, he was not born into a Christian or Catholic family. At the event of his birth, all the traditional rituals that follow the birth of a child were in place. The Annangs were very religious before the arrival of Christianity, and they believed in life after death as the Christians do. But unlike Christians, they also believed in reincarnation. In most cases, the belief was that a child who came into a family must be a departed ancestor and, therefore,
