Long Lost Friend
It was early in the spring of 1955 when Bill Anderson was driving down the road to a friend’s home. Bill had not seen his old friend since they got out of school years ago. Bill was wondering why Pete had called him to come out of the big city. However, right now he did not care. Bill was taking his good old time, it had been a long time since Bill had been in the country. Bill was early for his appointment with Peter Atkins so he stopped the car along side the road near a river, and walked the river bank for a while, It was a nice day, with a light breeze coming off the river. Bill enjoyed every minute of it, but he could not stay there all day even though it would be nice.
Bill got back into his car and went on his way. He had not gone far when he turned off the main road, following Pete’s directions, and went down this narrow dirt road, to Pete’s home. As Bill got closer, Bill could see that Pete had done well for him self. He had a nice place, with a white fence surrounding his estate. Something Bill had dreamed about all his life having, but with his wages, it was only a dream.
As Bill pulled into the driveway, he stopped the car, got out, and admired Pete’s home. It was a large white home with large white pillars at each end of the porch. With two small pillars each side of the front door. Leading up to the house from the garage was a horseshoe driveway. As Bill was walking to the house, he noticed that his friend Pete had two cars and a jeep in the garage. Bill rang the doorbell and stepped back to admire the surroundings. Just then, the door opened and a voice said,
Can I help you?
As Bill turned back around, he said,
Yes, my name is Bill, Bill Anderson, is Mr. Atkins at home? He wrote me a letter to come and see him.
Sorry, Mr. Atkins isn’t at home right now, but he is expected any minute. You may come in and wait, if you desire sir.
Yes I will thank you.
You may wait in the den, Sir; would you like some refreshments while you wait?
Yes if it is no bother, thank you. By the way I didn’t get your name?
My name is Sam, call if you need me
Yes I will Sam.
While Sam was gone to get Bill’s drink, Bill was admiring the den. There was a large wall covered with all kinds of books, any kind that a person would like to read. In the room, there was a large wooden desk, with a soft office chair in front of it, Along one of the walls, there was a set of two easy chairs that anyone would feel like a king sitting in, with a lamp over each one to read by. On the outer wall was a large bay window that looks out over the driveway, you could see anyone that came to visit. Just then the door opened, a Sam came in.
Here is your drink Sir, Mr. Atkins just called, he will be here shortly, he told me to tell you to make yourself comfortable.
I will Sam, thank you very much.
As Bill was sitting in one of the easy chairs, having his drink, looking out the window, he noticed the young man trimming the bushes, and another man cleaning the cars, one at a time. Bill thought to him self, Pete sure has done well for him self. To have all these people working for him. Just then, Bill noticed a black limaseen entering the driveway, stopping in front of the house. A tall man got out and opened the back door. Bill noticed his friend Pete get out. He would know him anywhere, for he had not changed since school. A tall thin man, with a head of hair any man would be envious of, As he entered the house Bill could here, Sam says,
Your friend Bill is in the den waiting for you.
Thank you; please do not disturb us, unless it is necessary.
Ok, Sir
Just then, the door opened into the den and Pete walked in,
Hello Bill I haven’t seen you in years.
Hi Pete, it has been a long time, hasn’t it?
Yes, Bill, about 20 years, it was at my wedding.
Pete said
By the way, where is Mary, is she here?
replied Bill
No, Bill, not right now. I had to send her and the twins, to her mother, out west. That brings the reason I sent for you.
What makes you think I can help you,
Bill said.
You are a private eye, aren’t you?
Pete replied
Yes
Bill said, But.
"But nothing replied Pete, I need your help, Will you help me? Pete asked.
I haven’t said one way or another
Bill came back with a quick answer. Let me here your story first, then I will give you my answer,
Replied Bill.
Well Pete said, "It started about six months ago, when I got a letter by messenger threatening my life, and family. I forgot all about the threat, until strange things were happening. For instance, the brakes would go out on the car, right after they were checked, Different thing would fall, coming close to the boys. It made me very scared when someone tried to run Mary down, when she was taking her evening walk on the side of the road. That is when I sent her and the boys to her mothers, and I sent for you. Will you
