The Adventure of Sam Carter - Peter Murray

    Chapter 1:

    Patricia and Sam Carter

Sophie arrives at Sam’s house. The blue house is large, with a nice glass front door along with four windows on each side of the house.

Sam gets out of the van and walks into the house. Sophie locks the van and follows him inside. The floors are oak in the hallway. She examines the kitchen, studying its black-and-white tile floor and tan colored cabinets when she hears Sam yell.

Damn it! he swears and she immediately runs upstairs toward the sound of his voice, into what seems to be Patricia’s childhood room. It is painted a periwinkle color and the band One Direction is featured on a huge poster on the middle of the wall.

That was her favorite band, Sophie remembers.

I know. She listened to them all the time and she sang so beautifully, Sam says, almost tearing up again.

    Yeah, Sophie says.

Sam sits on Patricia’s queen sized waterbed with a purple comforter, and stares at the wall.

I don’t usually tell people this, but I had a lot of nightmares in the past. They terrified me. Sometimes Trish would sing, and it calmed me down, he tells Sophie. She nods, and changes the subject.

Why did you yell before I got here? Sam gets up and looks at Sophie with a disappointed look on his face.

Because I can’t unlock the safe. It’s over there. He points to a large, wide black safe with a combination lock that sits on a table on the right side of the room. Sophie walks over to it and put her hands on the knob. She leans her ear on the safe and she starts to turn it. Sam watches Sophie carefully and in a few seconds he hears a click.

Wow, you go it, he gasps with shock. Sophie pulls the handle and the safe opens. She turns to Sam.

Of course I got it. At the agency I’m the best safe-cracker there is. She rubs her hands together. Sam walks toward the safe and is surprised to see only one thing inside it. He picks it up.

    It’s a… remote?

Ah, that’s just like her, Sophie chuckles.

What? Sam asks with a puzzled expression on his face.

Press the button and then you’ll see, Sophie says. Sam hesitantly presses the button and the walls of the room start to recede into the floor.

What the… Sam says, astonished. Sophie smiles slyly, and crosses her arms. She looks closely at Sam and examines her thoughts. She was unsure at first to involve a civilian, but Trish had insisted.

He is definitely Trish’s brother. Same chestnut brown hair but shorter; the warm brown eyes are similar too. The only thing different about them is their gender, height, personality, well there’s the age too. He’s actually kind of cute now that I think about it . I shouldn’t be thinking things like that. Show no emotion, show no emotion. Sophie shakes her head as she tries to shake her thoughts away.

You okay? Sam asks with concern as the walls are finally down.

Huh? Oh yeah, I’m fine, she lies.

They stand in a dimly-lit room, looking at each other as the real walls appear. Suddenly the lights blink on and they redirect their attention to the room.

Holy…crap, Sam says. Weapons, hundreds of them, hang on the walls. Handguns, semiautomatic and revolvers, rifles, shotguns and a scoped .50 caliber Tach50 rifle. An MP50 sub machine gun, an M16, and an AK47. A grenade launcher along with several types of grenades. Explosive devices. Seven different sets of bows and even more types of arrows, recumbent, re curve hunting bows. A crossbow with three sets of bolts. Many types of swords – a katana, a Scottish claymore, a scimitar, others. An array of daggers and knives. Two axes. A set of twelve throwing knives.

Well, that explains a lot, Sam chuckles as he shakes his head.

What do you mean? Sophie asks.

Well, whenever my sister and were bored, we played hide and seek. I could never find her, and eventually got tired of the game. No wonder, he says with a small laugh.

Mm hm…It seems like she wanted you to be prepared if this should ever happen, Sophie says.

Yeah, I guess, Sam agrees. Sophie nods. Okay so now what? Sam asks. As if on cue a hologram pops up. It is an image of Patricia herself.

Sis? Sam says in wonder as he walks up slowly to the hologram. He tries to touch the image but his hand goes right through it.

Sam, if you’re seeing this then it means I’ve been killed on a mission for the Agency. My legacy is over, and I’m passing it on to you now. All those times we trained together, all the hide and seek games we’ve played. Those were to train you little brother. I’m also assuming Sophie is there with you? If so, please trust her. She’ll help you find the person who killed me. I’m so sorry we never got to spend more time together. You thought I worked as a sales rep, but obviously, I didn’t. I’m sure by now that Sophie told you not to show emotion. Let me assure you that bullshit is Agency nonsense. They don’t want you to show emotion because they want you to have a heart of stone. Sophie and I are not like that. Soph, you know you’re not like that. I want you to show emotion, since I was the senior partner in our damn mission squad. Sam, I loved knitting and making things when I was young, so I made something for you.

A compartment ascends from the floor, and it holds a black suit covered by glass. Sam walks toward it.

    That can’t be… Sophie says.

This is a fully functional Super Suit. You will have the powers of Super Strength, Super Speed, and Super Reflexes,. On the shoulder plates is a giant red C with a white circle around it. The C represents our family’s last name, Carter. The red represents your favorite color. I made this suit for you so you can find my killer. I predicted this day would come. Unfortunately it comes to all of us here at the Agency. I don’t want you to be part of that. Oh, now for a little side note, Sam… Patricia’s hologram beams with a big smile.

    Uh oh… Sophie thinks nervously.

Sophie is available if you wish to date her! She’s really cute, kind, and sweet. She’s also- Patricia is interrupted as she looks to the right when someone yells.

Don’t listen to her! yells a hologram of Sophie.

Patricia’s hologram starts laughing as she says, She’s also really funny too. You two would be great together.

Stop acting so silly Patricia. I don’t like your younger brother! Besides we got a new mission, let’s get to it.

Whatever… love you Sam and I think Sophie does too, Patricia’s hologram sang.

I do not! Sophie’s hologram exclaims. Both of the holograms disappear as Sam removes the glass that is covering the suit. He gently places it on the ground.

Try it on, Sophie insists. Her cheeks are crimson. When they recorded that bit together, she hadn’t heard the first part. She had no idea Sam would ever hear the last part.

Sam nods as he takes the suit. He walks out of Patricia’s room and walks into the bathroom across the hall. He opens the door and then closes it.

Meanwhile Sophie puts her hand on her face as she thinks, that was so embarrassing…

A few seconds later Sam comes out of the bathroom and walks back into Patricia’s room.

So how do I look? he asks as he looks at himself.

Sophie studies Sam and replies, Not bad.

Thanks, how is it supposed to work though? Sam wonders.

Hmm, good question. She never explained that. I’m going to assume if you want super strength, you tell the suit you want it? Sophie says, shrugging.

Okay well let’s see if this works.

Give me super strength, Sam thinks. Sam’s muscles grow bigger, enlarging until they are visible, solid mounds of muscles on his arms and legs. His entire body looks sculpted and powerful, as if he’d spent the last year working out at the gym 24-7.

Well, looks like I was right. You definitely have super strength, Sophie says.

Sam heads back to the room where he received the suit, and decides to choose a weapon. He looks around the racks, eventually eying the bows and arrows. Every one of them is beautifully crafted and Sam’s eyes eventually stop on one that is a deep dark black with tips of white – a recumbent bow. He takes it in his hands, gently touching the highly polished wood. He grabs a sheath, and fills it with around three hundred aluminum steel-tipped arrows, and then he straps it to his back.

    Not bad, Sophie says.

Thanks, so you have any other weapon besides the gun? Sam asks.

Nope, this little gun is all I need, Sophie proclaims. But she grabs more ammo and a long combat knife anyway.

Why? Sam wonders. Just then there is a noise from downstairs, the sound of glass breaking.

They hear a man scold, Be careful you idiot! We can’t let them know we are coming for them!

Well sorry but the vase was in the way, replies another male voice.

That was my mother’s favorite vase! Sam exclaims in a low whisper.

Sophie shushes Sam as she readies her gun.

Looks like you’re about to find out what being part of this game is all about Sam, and I hope you are ready.

    Chapter 2:

    The Dumb Brothers

So remind me again, who are they? Sam whispers.

I never told you. But I’ll explain once we get out of here, Sophie says.

The quickest way out would be a window, Sam suggests as he points over to the window beyond Patricia’s bed.

    Got it, Sophie replies.

Sam and Sophie are about to make their way toward the window as a tall man enters the room. Sam looks at the man as he gulps in fear. He figures the strange man must be just over six feet tall. He studies the man and he notices his black hair is tied into a ponytail. That the man wears a similar suit to Sam’s is even more shocking.

Looks like we’ve got company! Sophie exclaims.

So this is the famous Sam James Carter we’ve heard so much about huh? Looks kind of puny to me, the man remarks.

Looks can be deceiving, Sam says, readying his bow, knocking an arrow.

The man smirks and tries tackling Sam. Sam quickly evades him. Sam laughs. The man’s face reddens and he pulls a weapon.

Don’t taunt me, I’m warning you kid, he threatens.

Another man enters the room. Sam notices that this new man also wears a black suit similar to his own. The only difference between the two men, as far as Sam can see, is that the second man has brown hair as well as dark brown eyes. Sam sees that the second man is much shorter than the first. He studies the men for weaknesses but doesn’t see any.

Boss? this shorter man, the Underling asks.

What do you want now? the Boss growls angrily.

Um, the girl is about to escape through that window, sir, the Underling points out.

What? the Boss asks with a puzzled look on his face.

Sophie opens the window and says, Sam let’s get out of here!

Right, Sam replies, still unsure whether to fire his arrow at the leader or not. Should he really just leave them alone in his house? What if they are still there when his mother gets home? Will she get hurt?

Oh no you don’t, kid, the Boss bellows as he reaches Sam with both of his hands.

Sam hurries to the window using the suit’s Super Speed, he and Sophie climb out the window as fast as possible.

Okay so mind telling me who these two idiots are? Sam asks as he and Sophie run to the van.

I’ll explain everything once we get in the van, Sophie assures him.

Shit! We forgot to close the weapon room. Now they’ll have all the weapons, Sam exclaims worriedly.

Relax Sam. That won’t happen because I got the remote. Sophie holds a slim rectangular object in her hand points it skyward and presses a bright yellow button.

Sophie and Sam open the doors and climb into the van, and she quickly starts it up.

The two strap on their seat belts. Sophie guns the accelerator as soon as the engine is on.

Too close of a call, Sam sighs with relief.

That was your first time in a fight? Sophie asks.

    Yeah, Sam says.

Ah, well, hopefully you’ll get to use that bow in the next one, Sophie says.

Bring my body back to normal, Sam thinks. His muscles start to decrease and his body returns back to normal.

I gotta admit Patricia did a good job on that suit, Sophie says.

Yeah she did and I’m proud of her, Sam responds.

The two assassins back there, they were the Cleaners, brothers, Sophie explains. They’re pretty much idiots. Not even worth killing, they pose no threat. Trish and I used to call them the Dumb Brothers.

Haha. Well they clearly weren’t the most capable assassins, Sam chuckles.

Appearances can be deceiving. The shorter brother is pretty stupid, but the taller one you have to look out for. He’s extremely powerful, Sophie explains.

Ah, but I guess he doesn’t understand the power of the mind, Sam says tapping his temple.

True. The brain is a powerful thing - the most powerful yet dangerous weapon in the world, if wielded properly, Sophie replies.

Silence follows. They drive, both wrapped in their own thoughts. Sam occasionally loses his train of thought and simply stares at the neighborhoods they are passing, wondering what the people inside all those quaint looking homes are doing right now.

Are they leading normal lives? Baking cookies? Or are they trying to formulate a plan to knock out bad guys? Probably normal stuff, he thinks. They’re watching television, playing video games, checking to see what’s in the fridge.

So tell me something, he says, breaking the silence.

    Yes? Sophie responds.

This Agency… what exactly is it? Sam asks.

Sophie does not reply immediately, as memories flash through her mind. It’s a bad place Sam…I don’t really want to talk about it, Sophie says.

O-okay, Sam says, unsure what to make of her response.

We’re going to need a safe place to rest before the long drive we’ll need to take. Van, show the route to the hotels near Highway 41 exit 21, please, Sophie commands the computer on the dashboard.

A red holographic map of the state emerges from the unit on the dashboard. Blue marks indicate hotels, about ten in total.

I think we should go to this one, near the beach. Lots of people will be around, making an attack less likely, Sophie says.

Sure. But I do have a couple questions. Where are we going to get the money to use to pay for the hotel? Are we going to buy clothes for this long drive or get them at our destination?

I have plenty of cash, and there will be clothing and supplies where we’re going, Sophie replies.

    Sam nods.

Sophie nods and continues to drive.

After a four-hour drive. Sophie and Sam finally arrive at the hotel. Sophie notices that Sam has fallen asleep.

He looks so adorable, she thinks with a slight blush. She shakes her head. Memories flood her mind…

Maybe it is a good thing I haven’t shut off my emotions… Sophie mutters to herself, and she notices that Sam has started waking up. He rubs his eyes.

Are we at the hotel yet? he asks.

Yeah, we just got here, Sophie tells him. She parks the van in the main lot and they head to the front desk.

    Chapter 3:

    Night at the hotel

Wait, hang on a minute. I can’t go into a hotel looking like this, Sam protests.

Relax. Trish left a little secret on your left arm. Press the silver button, Sophie says, pointing to a button on the suit near Sam’s chest. Sam raises his left eyebrow as he presses the button. A red glow surrounds him as his suit changes to a red, short-sleeved shirt and brown shorts.

No way! My favorite outfit! Sam exclaims.

Yeah, now if you want to activate the suit, just press the same button. So just be careful not to press it by accident.

    Okay, Sam says.

The two get out of the van and walk into the front office.

Hello there. Is there anything we can do to help the lovely couple? the man working the desk asks.

Sophie blushes, and is thankful that her reddened cheeks are hidden by the night.

We’d like a room for the night, Sophie says.

Okay, there are suites and regular rooms available. Three fifty for a regular room, five hundred for a suite, he says.

Just a regular room, Sophie tells him and puts the cash down on the table. The desk clerk hands her
